It really surprised me they let Millsap go without making an offer. At this point, I hope Mike moves on as well, maybe to Minnesota. T'wolves look like they'll be fun to watch. Atlanta is going to be bad for many years to come. Really not impressed with this new GM.

I'm very impressed with this GM. It is not his fault it got to the point where Horford and Millsap walked without return, I'm confident he would have gotten something for them at the various trade deadlines. He was able to turn Millsap into Diamond Stone and Houston's first rounder. He dumped th awful Howard contract to add shooting the team needs. It is a rebuild that had to happen. They couldn't afford to pay the 342 million it took to sign the starting five that led them to the 60 win season.

That said I hope he signs Mike at about 3 years 27 million.

I am starting to think that Mike may not get as much as I had previously thought. Last year, the salary cap exploded from $70 million to $94 million. Thus the teams started spending money like the proverbial drunken sailor. However this year the cap hardly moved at all - and thus many teams have no room for free agents other than what they have under arcane things like the mid-level exception. Bird exceptions, bi-annual exception, etc.

In any event, this may lead to less money being available for players who aren't superstars.

It's pretty clear from the trade and free agent news/rumors that Atlanta has no interest in re-signing Mike. Hopefully, he lands with a playoff caliber team somewhere. He will be a valuable asset to someone.

Somewhat telling is the Atlanta Hawks twitter feed for july1, Mike's birthday. There was a nice birthday wish for Kent Bazemore, who shares the same birthday as Mike, and also a bunch of rookie signing news. Mike was not mentioned on that day. Was it an oversight, or have they moved on?

My hunch is 2 years 5.5 million at Dallas. Stay tuned.

At the projected 5 Year $22.8 Million level, the Sixers need to trade Okafor and sign Muscala ASAP. The Sixers should be a fun, young team over the next 5 years with lots of wins in the future.

Looks like Mike may have been a victim of the tightening salary cap. Reportedly just signed with the Hawks for two years for a total of $10 Million. That is far less than similar players got last year.

I think the important detail about this contract for him is that he has a player option to opt out next year. Most likely he'll start for the hawks this year at center, it allows him to prove himself as a starter and try to get a bigger payday next year. But yea at it's face value, 2 year 10 million is pretty disappointing.

Yes, the player opt-out makes it a better deal from his perspective. That feature wasn't in the first tweet about his signing.

It is possible that Mike had a strong preference for Atlanta, since it is the franchise that developed him and because his fiance is from that area.

It's hard to reconcile this with Olinyk's 4 yr, $50M deal with Miami. He may be marginally better than Mike, but not $7.5M/yr better. Hawks got a bargain. Still, $5M isn't chump change either.

Congratulations to Mike. The first year of this deal pays him more than he made the previous four. $5 million is nothing to sneeze at and the most lucrative years of his career are in front of him.

Congratulations Mike!

Some comments from Peachtree Hoops on Mike's deal:

https://www.peachtreehoops.com/2017/7/8/15941044/a...

They call the Muscala deal a "huge steal for the Hawks" - however balanced to some extent by the player opt-out clause which might net him a much larger contract if he has a good year. He apparently has some sort of no-trade provision as well.

Charles Lee is coaching the Hawks summer league team this year. Like the orange tie.

I would be happy to get "only" $5 million per year. Actually, I'll give them a 10% discount to sign me today!!!

Its all gravy after 6 or 7 million anyway. His contract is a work in progress just like his career is. If he does individually well on a lottery focused team he will be rewarded next year. If he does poorly he will push but still have next year to regroup. A calculated risk perhaps geminated at a university on a hill.

Hawks signed Dewayne Dedmon today. He played with the Spurs last season and plays center. He signed a 2 year deal worth 14 million.

Article on the Dedmon acquisition. Sounds like the jury is out on whether he will start ahead of Mike.
