Yeah, no talent there, right.
Sigh.

Though it seems like all of Tony's complexity is evident in one article about one scrimmage. The kid that the headline is about, who hit 6 out of 8 threes, appears to be the guy Hicks was guarding (at least in the picture). Good news is that Tony's team won, so you can't say (as I sometimes did) that he got his at the expense of the team.

No one ever said that Tony was the best player in America. Apparently, this kid is a top recruit far above the level of typical Ivy recruits in terms of talent. Even assuming that Hicks was covering him (taking it from the photo is a bit of a stretch, but who cares), Hicks outscored him and his team won. Hicks obviously can play at the highest level of college basketball. Yet the worst basketball coach in America couldn't win with him in the Ivy League. With a legitimate big man, a top Ivy swingman recruit and a collection of guys who could play but regressed. Managed to lose 22,20 and 19 in 3 years with those guys. It's really inconceivable that that happened.

Tony Hicks was to my mind one of the most talented guards on offense we've had at Penn. He wasn't the best shooter or the best penetrator we've ever had, but he was one of the best as a combination dual threat. I am blaming his 3 pt. percentages partially on a team that provided him with no coaching and poor ball movement on offense. He had to create a lot of his 3 pt shots instead of having them fall out of a system.
Even though his stats were OK under Allen, I still think his real strengths were squandered. I am glad that Donahue has an offensive philosophy that is more clear than Allen's, but It does worry me a bit that Donahue was so much of a system coach that he couldn't even use Hicks' talents at all.

y'all are living in the past trying to figure out whether Tony Hicks moves us from 6th to 4th or 3rd in the Ivy league while over in the 2017 recruit thread, me and Q'03 are figuring out who to pair with Eddie/Jelani/Jarrod/AJ.
You can figure out what's more fun.

As you know, I live in the real world. I don't spend any time wondering who might come to Penn until they actually do. I don't spend much energy wondering what kind of game they have until I see them play. I've gotten burned too many times with guys who are going "to run the show," that I just wait until we have a competitive team on the court. I am hopeful that we will be better this year, but it depends on the play of the transfers. You are 2 years down the road with visions of a title. I hope your visions are correct, but there will be plenty of chances to see in 2 years. Meanwhile, we have a season to play now.

First, I was being flip. but you weren't talking about this year, you were talking about the past with players who aren't here and coaches who aren't here.
i'd rather have visions of a future title than argue about KenPom 200 type teams and counterfactuals. if you don't, you're free to keep arguing.

I wasn't being critical of you.
At this point, the logical discussions are the past and the future. We will talk about the present in less than a month.

I suspect that you would have seen a different approach from Donahue if he inherited, say, what Milelr inherited from Dunphy. If we were going to compete for a title, I think he would have altered the system plenty to fit Hicks in. At Cornell, Donahue wasn't too much of a system coach once he got a good team.
I think what you saw last year was a situation where Donahue wanted to immediately start building a team to compete down the line, and Hicks would have detracted from that in some ways.

Fair enough, Jeff2SF and SomeGuy.
Hopeful that this program will go from hurting our eyes to entertaining this season. In a few years, hopefully it will be winning and playing for championships!

I agree. I think he was honest with Tony and suggested that the opportunity at Louisville was a good one--probably put in a good word for him. Donahue knew we would be bad last year--still did better than Jerome with more talent.

Interesting to see how things go for Tony. He didn't play last night, even though Pitino used 13 guys. Pitino was asked if Hicks was available after the game, and he said: "Yes, but I couldn't play everybody."

Saw him on TV last week. Hit his 1st shot about 10 seconds after he got in. Ended up 1-9.

That's too bad. It would be nice for the league to have him be successful - it would speak well of the caliber of player in the league.

Well, we always knew he was a volume scorer. In this case, he found a different way to go 1 for 9 I guess...

He didn't play that game, got a few garbage minutes the next game and was a DNP for the most recent 2 games. 3 DNP's and some trash time, must be in Pitino's doghouse.

It wasn't garbage time in the one game he played. He came in when they were ahead 7-1, took three quick shots (and missed them) in under two minutes, and never played again.
Hopefully, he's getting an extended message and will start to play again.
