He's getting more press with this Duke/Harvard thing than all the rest of the Top 10 put together. http://www.sbnation.com/college-basketball/20 16/10...

This choice probably comes down to values. If the kid and his parents crave the big basketball stage the Harvard option is limiting. If, on the other hand, he wants to enjoy the collegiate life for four years Harvard and Boston offer limitless opportunities. If he aspires to reach the NBA asap Duke offers the best exposure. No matter what he does I must say he is a fine young man. Wish he wanted to go to Princeton

Only best wishes for him. But, if he is to be a one-and-done, I suggest that he take the Duke option, enroll in some real courses for that year, and transfer to Harvard (or Princeton) upon completing his NBA career as he starts a new chapter in his life. He gets the best of both worlds -- top pro prep at Duke, and top life prep and education at H/P.

No question that one year of coaching from Mike K while playing in the ACC is probably worth a lot more from an NBA point of view than one year at Harvard. One and done in general is an interesting utility maximization question, because one thing lots of middle-aged rich people might wish they could buy is four great undergraduate years while in their twenties.

Word is that Carter has changed his mind and will sign early. Duke is still the favorite. Georgia thinks it has a shot.

Georgia has no shot. Harvard made a nice run, more than I had heard(except MrJmaes....full credit) or anticipated. He will be at Duke

Yeah... I'd be very surprised if he chose Harvard at this point just given the timing with Gary Trent Jr. I wouldn't say I'm 100% Duke, but whatever the odds I would give are significantly worse than a month or two ago.

It's important to note, however, that this does not end Harvard's chances at a one-and-done player this cycle. Depending on how things play out, Harvard has a better shot with Bamba than people are giving it credit for.

Why would a "one and dunner" want to come to Harvard, and why would Harvard even WANT a "one and dunner?"

Because being a ridiculously highly skilled basketball player shouldn't disqualify you from wanting to have access to a world class education just like any other talent or skill shouldn't.

I'm not sure of the exact rules, but I believe you can maintain your status as a student for a period of time if you leave. And I don't think this is all that new. I went to school with a guy who was in the Pirates organization and would go to school one semester a year and take each spring off for minor league baseball commitments.

Any real information about how many "one and dunners" in recent years have ever returned to their 6-month "alma maters" to further their education?

Amazing article, page D6, in today's WSJ. Great publicity for Harvard and the Ivy League. Crimson certainly appear to be in the mix for Carter.
