Columbia leads Stony Brook 31-29 at halftime on Long Island in the first basketball game of the Engles Era. Fast, fast and faster is the best way to describe the Lions new uptempo game. Lions Fans are going to love it! Incidentally, our guys are playing well against an extremely athletic opponent. Engles is playing two five man teams--more to come later.

73-66, featuring Perasek's 20, Smith's 14, including an acrobatic 3 near the end to clinch, and 3 3s from Adlesh. We still don't have an interior defense, but we're quick and gutsy. Up by 13, SB ties it, but we still pull it out.

Congratulations on the OOC win. A bit easier without Warney around.

When Meisner starts hitting his shots we will be tough to beat. I like what I see from Rodney. He should be getting more minutes. Luke is the real deal, this year, and Smith looks like he is going to be a tremendous PG.

Adlesh looks like a worthy successor to the steadying Mullins. He and Smith were playing at the end, both made some important points.

At the b'ball dinner, they said he had hamstring issues. They hope to have him back in a couple of weeks.
We sure do need some defense inside.

I thought the Lions were outstanding tonight in defeating a very athletic Stony Brook squad that dominated the boards, but couldn't match Columbia in any other category. This game hardly seemed like the season opener for the Lions because their ball movement was so outstanding and they made so few defensive errors. More than that, despite the torrid pace, the Lions seemed to have everything under control and when the going got tough towards the end of the game they exhibited a toughness that put away the Seawolves. Finally, while the whole Lion Team played well, Columbia fans had to be thrilled with the sparkling debut of Mike Smith as well as the solid play of the other newcomers--Rodney Hunter, Jake Killingsworth and sophomore Quinton Adlesh, who qualifies as a newcomer as he didn't play much last year.

I'm many time zones away so missed both video and audio. How was our D? SB took 17 more shots than we did, which is only partially explained by their outrebounding us, so did we defend decently or was it that SB couldn't hit the broad side of a barn?
Even without having seen/heard the game, I'm tremendously impressed by our poise: tied near the end of a game on an away court and we pull it out! That's impressive.

With all of the attention given to some of the other first years around the league perhaps Mike Smith slipped under the radar, but here you have a first year PG playing like a seasoned veteran. One cautionary note: Luke does have a tendency to pick up fouls and without Coby for the next three weeks we will need him. I was also encouraged by the faster pace and by the contributions of the newcomers. If Meisner's offensive production/shooting percentage picks up he will be a tremendous player.

If Mike were 2-3 inches taller he'd have been getting offers from the majors. He's a nice going away present from Kyle.

How did Rodney feel after being on the shelf last year? I thought he looked fluid.

Agree that Mike is a nice going away present from Kyle. Great talent, poise, smarts and attitude. Doc, I thought our defense was excellent, reflecting across the board improvement in many areas from last year. Stony Brook's players are very quick and athletic, but our guys are good athletes also and played them tough. The next test is Monday against #94 ranked St. Joe's in Philly.

I made this post on August 17th:
Mike Smith is a great get for Columbia. I would not be shocked to see him in the conversation as the top freshman in the league this year, which is saying a lot given the talent coming in throughout the league.
He was never under my radar. He was in the conversation for player of the year in Illinois, a state that has produced Jahlil Okafor and Jabari Parker the last two years and is well known for some great prospects.

He said he wasn't nervous. He let things come to him. I thought he played pretty good defense.....taking that charge was good momentum for the team.

The degense was better. We do need to rebound better after boxing out. They got too many 2nd shots.

Your point about Smith, Penn Fan 10, was well taken.
I hope rebounding doesn't turn out to be an ongoing issue for us. We weren't a great rebounding team last year, but our guards were better than average rebounders and Isaac was an off the charts rebounder for his size. We really need mid-sized players such as Hickman and Rodney to rebound.
Whether we like it or not, we now live in an era of the three point shot, by which I mean that successful teams tend to have very good 3-put shooters. Unless a two point shooter can also draw a foul and then hit his FT, a three point shooting team will beat a two-point shooting team. But Mr. Hunter is of course right that having players who can drive/slash is important because they can draw fouls and, equally importantly, they can open things up for three point shooters.

In response to Dr. V, Coby is an excellent rebounder whose presence will be missed. The sooner he is back the better. Maybe Tape will help there as well.As far as the importance of three point shooting, the problem is "live by the sword, die by the sword." When a three point team hits a dry spell and misses 7 or 8 in a row, the other team always seems to go on a run. And Kyrie Irving showed last year against the Warriors that there is still a place for the midrange game.

It helps when you can shoot as well as Kyrie.
Princeton seems to be the one team that year in and year out gives us the most trouble, and Princeton just bombs us from beyond the three point line.
