The "good news", if you call it that, is that the Big Green was not supposed to win versus #23 URI. Also in the good category, and this is truly good, is that E.B. picked right back up from last year and had a double-double. Whew! Ike can play. In his first start in 4 years he scored a career high 9 points! Also among the big minute players he was the only one with 0 turnovers. Oh, and we can rebound and make free throws.
On a night where talented freshman made their debut one of the two highly regarded Ian's played more minutes than a couple of the starters. Ian Sistare was the most steady of all the point guards Coach Mac threw into the fire, only turning over the ball 3 times. Also, the kid had some fight in him, so much so that he drew boos from the crowd every time he got the ball. It got a little chippy.
The bad news is that despite being expected to lose to #23 URI, they were not projected by any forecasting service to lose by as much as they did. They struggled mightily getting a shot off against the Rams in the first half. They struggled to the tune of having their shot rejected 11 times over the course of the game. Turnovers are going to be the death of them as depth of guard play was exposed as not being able to take care of the ball. They had no answer for the pressure of the pressing defense the Rams threw at the guys.
The Ugly, was URI played everyone and I do mean everyone, including the walk-ons. Even though it was just one game, and one in which they weren't supposed to win, there are a lot of holes on both ends of the court. The offense had no space, no pace, and the ball was not moving. There were only 6 assists and 20 turnovers. On the other side of the floor the Big Green had 0 blocks to URI's 11 and 2 Steals to URIS 12. Off the court the team's media guide was as discombobulated as the poor kids on the court. There were players listed from the previous season and nobody's photo matched their name.
