Cornell (0-1) at Siena (0-0) 2:00 pm Sunday

Siena went 21-13 (13-7 in MAAC; 3rd) last season. The Saints lost in the first round of the CBI Tournament. This year's team was picked second in the MAAC pre-season poll. The team returns its top 5 scorers from last year.

Brett Bisping and Javion Ogunyemi were chosen for First Team Pre-Season All-MAAC team. Bisping was First-Team All-MAAC last year. Ogunyemi was Second Team All-MAAC and MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015-2016. Then-First Year Nico Clareth was the MAAC Sixth-Player of the Year last year.

Last year, the Red beat Siena 81-80 at Newman Arena. The Saints had a 10 point lead midway through the second half. Then-Junior Robert Hatter scored 28 of his 32 points in the second half to lead Cornell to the victory.

Center David Onuorah did not make the trip, leaving Cornell front court without its leading rebounder. Forward Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof missed his second game of the season.

With just over 10 minutes in the first half, the Red held a 24-18 lead. The Saints then went on a 30-10 run to take a 48-34 lead at halftime.

By the 7:30 mark of the second half, Cornell got within 3 points, 67-64. Unfortunately for the Red, that was the closest the team got.

Cornell was led by forward Stone Gettings with 16 points and 4 assists. Matt Morgan scored 16, with 12 in the second half, to go along with 8 rebounds. Robert Hatter had a double-double with 12 points, 10 defensive rebounds and 4 assists. JoJo Fallas and forward first-year Josh Warren had 10 points each.

Siena's senior guard Marquis Wright had 31 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The team's leader forward Brett Bisping had a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds, 5 on the offensive end. Sophomore Nico Clareth had 14 points and Senior Javion Ogunyemi had 13 points, while dealing with foul trouble throughout the game.

The Red improved its offensive output from the opening game at Binghamton by shooting 7-19 from three (37%) and 45% overall (29-64). Although Siena had a bigger front court, Cornell outrebounded the Saints 41-38, including 14-13 on the offensive side.

Unfortunately, Cornell shot 59% at the free throw line (13-22), allowed its opponent to score 89 points, gave up 11 three pointers, committed 26 fouls and turned the ball over 14 times.

Haven't gotten to watch the guys because of travel issues. From the box scores, it's great to see Stone getting some PT; he was a terrible fit for Courtney's system. Josh Warren's early contribution has surprised me.

Is Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof hurt, or has he lost his job? Also perplexed by the lack of PT for Daryl Smith.

Gettings has been an important contributor so far. It's a shame he was not listed on the first Ivy League Honor Roll.

Gettings and Warren appear to be two players that the coach likes and will use to build the program over the next few years. Warren has done well, showing lots of hustle and determination.

Abdur-Ra'off, Bunce, Davis and Smith are out due to injuries. In Abdur-Ra'oof's case, he is recovering from off-season surgery. I cannot find any information regarding their scheduled returns.

I am also surprised by the lack of playing time for Darryl Smith. For a team that needs help with offensive efficiency, Smith would seem to be a definite help. With a need to focus on three-pointers, it is understandable that Fallas would get the nod over Smith as the first guard off the bench. However, I would think Smith would be ahead of Troy Whiteside and Desmond Fleming on the depth chart.

Thanks for the quick response.

It's probably not fully repeatable, but Smith's ORat last year was 130.5. No, he's not going to hit 60% from the field again, but he's a good shooter and a much better bet to get to the rim. I'd probably have him first off the bench, but I've never coached.
