Haven't seen any mention yet of the thing that surprised me most. Will Gladson got into the game. He looked a bit helpless but I'm encouraged that Henderson thought enough of him to get him into a hotly( desperately) competitive game, with other more experienced options available.
Be the next great Princeton center Will.

Glad you brought him up. I haven't seen the portion of the game he played, but one of the questions when he signed was his height/weight, which were all over the place. I see him listed at 6-10, 255. If so he has all the size he needs. Just a question of athleticism and skills.

I believe Henderson would very much like to get Gladson some minutes. And I am quite sure he's thinking about him for this season. Miller is a battler but limited offensively, Brennan has not improved as hoped, and Brase is not big enough to play in the hole. This is an experienced team that probably needs to be better than last year's squad to win the Ivy title.

I was rooting hard for Princeton. I have just a few observations:
1. It is much harder to beat BYU at home than it was for Harvard in Maui. Ref's made sure of that and/or Brase foul situation was extremely unfortunate. Fact that officials have been instructed to make calls early in this season hurt Princeton, not BYU.
2. Mika is one of the best centers in CBB. That was accentuated by Brase foul issues which also exposed fact that although Princeton has size, Miller/Brennan are not offensive weapons unless they have a size advantage. Miller simply caught the ball at the edge of the lane and immediately looked to pass away from the basket. This 'weakness' won't really be exposed in Ivy League play.
3. If Princeton shoots 3's as they can, they win. Aside from the simple math, a few makes would have negated much of BYU's transition offense and negated a few fouls.
4. Princeton ball movement was not quite what it will be. Same group had less back cuts and did more dribbling (especially Weisz) than last year.
I know Princeton lost by 9, but in my eyes these are two virtually even top 50 teams. Princeton wins more often than not at Jadwin.

Nice analysis.
Of course BYU comes to Jadwin next year. They will be the same team with more experience; we will be a completely different team.
I got a look at Gladson on replay. On defense bodied up to Mika, who felt the size and gave up the ball rather than reverse pivot or try to go around. Gladson blocked out well also. Kind of slow of foot from one end to the other (not DNH slow). He did not handle the ball on offense during the portion I watched.

Two Qs:
Box score I saw had Brase with 6 PFs. Was that correct? Have rules changed?
Any news on Aririguzoh? I've heard that he has long arms and is defensive specialist. Might he be the alternative to Gladson?

I thought that Mitch would start both Miller and Brase due to the size of Davis and Mika. It turned out that Caruso scored 7 early points against Davis as Davis was not quick enough to keep up with Caruso. Although I have been a big fan of Miller, especially on defense, he had a poor defensive game and Brase was nothing better than average -- refs obviously did not help.
Tigers did not get off to a bad start at a raucous Provo crowd as they had a 10-5 and 20-17 lead with 10 minutes to go in the first half. They had a bad 10 minutes in the 1st half primarily due to poor shooting and a very poor final 7 minutes in the game again due to bad shot selection and shooting.
It is only the first game with Brase back so Henderson needs to figure out the best combination of players. Best defensive players are Cook, Miller and Bell. Best instant offense players are Cannady and Caruso. When Weisz plays point forward, Tigers offense is at its best. Tigers probably need to take less 3 pointers but hit 35-37% of 3 pointers to optimize performance. I would go with Miller and Brase against big teams as starters with Caruso off the bench and start Caruso vs. Miller against small teams. There is a lot of flexibility.

Isn't Stephens considered to be a lockdown defender?

Watched Yale extend its long home winning streak last night against the Tigers' next opponent, a very capable Lehigh team. The Bulldogs looked terrific. Downey is a load, Dallier is quite skilled at point, and the rookie Oni is a star in the making. Yale off to a very good start without heralded freshman Bruner and POY candidate Mason, getting help from up and down the rotation. The Elis were down 7 under 5 minutes and came back to send it to OT. When Kempton fouled out, after a career best 30, Yale dominated the last couple of minutes. Poised, confident and impressive. Puts some pressure on the Tigers to perform well in the MountainHawks home opener Sunday.

It also suggests Yale will contend for the Ivy title. Jones always has Princeton's number.
