Monmouth beat Drexel to open the season, then lost to South Carolina by one in overtime and 21 to Syracuse.

The Hawks are led by last year's MAAC Player of the year, Justin Robinson. The 5'8" senior guard averaged 19.3 points per game last season. This year, he is averaging 12.3 points per game.

Micah Seaborn and Chris Brady are averaging 11.7 points, per game while Je'lon Hornbeak scores 10.3 points per game.

Monmouth is shooting 35% overall and 23% from three. They are getting 9 steals, 15.7 offensive rebounds, and 24.3 defensive rebounds per game. They are holding opponents to 36% from the floor and 32% from beyond the arc.

Monmouth went on an early run and was never really challenged in the second half of a 76-61 loss.

On offense, the ball movement is better, but the shots didn't fall. Morgan and Hatter were a combined 5 for 20. The Big Red isn't winning many if both guards are misfiring. Wright followed his 26 point explosion with an 0 for 6 night, but he did have 5 rebounds befor leaving with an injury. Whiteside and Daryl Smith had nice nights off the bench, but a lot of the damage came after the game was all but decided.

Defensively, the Hawks used their superior size (David O. was out again) to get 16 second chance points. The defensive rebounding is better this season, but bigger teams are going to give the Red problems, especially without the turnovers last year's team generated with their traps. (I am not nostalgic for last season, but Cornell has gone from top 70 to 322 in generating turnovers).

Didn't expect the win, but hoped for a competitive second half.

After Sunday's best season performance, came last night's worst performance. Of course, Monmouth was the best team Cornell has played this season.

After going up 7-4 within the first 5 minutes, the Hawks went on a 25-2 run over the next 6+ minutes to open up a 20 point lead. While the Red were able to get it down to 14 at halftime, they never got any closer than that.

Recap:

The rebounding is always a big issue with them. If Wright ends up on the DL with Onuorah and Abdur-Ra'oof, then they will be in even bigger trouble. Gettings has been very good this season and Warren has had a number of good moments, but they are really thin after that.

While Morgan had double-digits against Lafayette, it was not one of his better games. Last night was the first time he has not had double-digits in 22 games. Hopefully, he gets back on track with the Houston game so he can help with the more winnable game against Northeastern on the 30th.

If Wright is out long term, it could be ugly. I've been pleasantly surprised by Warren, but he will struggle to stay on the court for more than 20 minutes because of freshman mistakes. After Josh and Stone, is Bayless the only healthy forward? That will be a lot of four guard looks.

I'm not worried about Morgan, he's still immensely talented. He and Coach Earl just need to find the right balance between running the offense to get everyone involved and letting Matt break guys down one on one to get to the rim.
