This game presents a strong common-opponent benchmarking opportunity, as the Explorers just hosted Lehigh on Wednesday, beating the Mountain Hawks 89-81.
Pomeroy has La Salle at 107 and the Bison at 137.
(Some amusing writing and quips in this piece on the Lehigh game and how it pitted two PhD coaches against each other http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/college s/la_sa... )

From La Salle's preview article:
•An interesting connection exists between La Salle University and Bucknell assistant coach Joe Meehan.
•Joe's grandfather, also named Joe, was a player on La Salle's very first basketball team in 1931 and was a team captain during his career with the Explorers
•The youngest Joe Meehan played high school ball at St. Joe's Prep under former La Salle head coach Speedy Morris.

LaSalle has a very experienced team, with a large number of transfers from big-time programs. Here is a quick rundown of their main players:
- Jordan Price - 5th year wing who transferred from Auburn and is averaging over 17 ppg for the third straight year.
- BJ Johnson - 4th year forward who transferred from Syracuse and is averaging 18 ppg.
- Cleon Roberts - 5th year wing who transferred from Georgia Southern and is in his third year as a LaSalle starter.
- Pookie Powell - 3rd year PG who transferred from Memphis.
- Amar Stukes - 4th year junior who started last year at PG.
- Demetrius Henry - 4th year PF/C who was a two-year starter at South Carolina before transferring.
- Tony Washington - 4th year center who started last year.
Note that those seven have collectively played 29 seasons (counting this year). Bucknell will rarely play a team with that much experience. Hopefully they won't play well as a unit.

Surreptitiously drain the pool early Saturday morning. You can go to the rescheduled meet.

I spent many more hours at swim meets (and practices) than at basketball games in the mid-2000's. I feel your pain.

From looking over the La Salle board, their fans appear to be overlooking this game. There is significantly more interest in discussing the Lehigh game that was played earlier this week and their upcoming Nova game. Let's hope that their players are thinking the same way.

Thank you for the link 89. We are in the middle of an away game stretch with three more away games until they are back home. There was only one home game from Nov. 19 until December 19 and the next home Saturday game is January 21!

Thank goodness for Nate Jones today! Who saw THIS coming??? Yeah some better defense would be nice. Man, I guess O'Reilly is still in a slump....just don't know how much floor time he can see if he is going to shoot just 20-30%. He has to shoot well in order to play, imo.

Turnovers hurt as did poor shooting in second half. Nana, O'Reilly and Kimbal didn't have it today. Did Nate get any shots in the second half? Stephen also had zero assists in he second half. Just not a good half of basketball. Can't win them all. Hopefully a more complete effort against Fairfield.

My wife and I just returned from the game and dinner in Bucks County. It's a shame. We played so well in the first half. In the first few minutes of the second half we looked like deer caught in the headlights. LaSalle really turned up the intensity at both ends of the court. I lost count of the number of our soft passes that were stolen or nearly so. The difference in athleticism was readily apparent, as did LaSalle's height advantage. Also, I was very impressed with LaSalle's FT shooting and disappointed with ours. This was one of those games where it only took one run to make the difference. Credit LaSalle. We'll have to play better against Fairfield and Siena. Btw, I'm wondering whether Zach is feeling under the weather. He just didn't look himself today both in his performance and his body language.

1. Yes, a lot of ill-advised passes.
2. I think a few players may have been under the weather.
3. Bison hit 13-17 on FT's (.765), so I don't think that was an issue.

Kimbal got very few shot attempts today, as LaSalle presumably reacted to his huge game the other night. O'Reilly otoh continues to struggle shooting the ball, which is a problem when that is the main reason you're on the court. Nate btw, after his huge first half, had only one shot attempt (a missed three) in the second half, as LaSalle made some defensive adjustments at half time.
True, Stephen had no assists in the second half - but the entire team only had one assist. Several reasons for the lack of assists:
- Way too many missed shots
- Stephen penetrated a lot off the dribble and took the shot, since they left him open. I would have liked to see him do that a lot more and a lot earlier. He is very good shooting in the middle of the lane off the dribble.
- Nana made several baskets, where the play started with an entry pass but he then backed in the defender and made a move. With college scoring rules, that often is not an assist.
- several passes to Nana led to shooting fouls - which is a good result but not an assist.

I actually thought Nana well played considering the rotation of trees that used on him. This was certainly a game that exposed our lack of height. Nana also had to work through consistent double teams which is fine when shooters are making their open looks ala the first half.
I'm not sure why the passing was so sloppy. Sister Margaret's School for Wayward Girls would have picked off most of those passes.

I have to agree about O'Reilly. I'm really wondering why he's getting so much playing time when he's a one-trick pony and is only shooting 30%. If he's comes in and shoots well, then leave him in. Otherwise, I'd rather see Toomer or Azzinaro get some of his minutes. They're stats aren't any better, but it's a much smaller sample size. At least give them an opportunity when O'Reilly's shots aren't falling.

After MacLeay's layup made it a 10-point game with 48 second left, we should have given a foul.
Unbelievable, unlikely comebacks happen.* Worst case is you make the game last longer with the same outcome. Best case is an unforgettable victory and adding a new basketball comeback legend to the list. No real downside, but a huge upside. The fact that it's an unlikely upside does not matter.
Football coaches build decision grids to remove emotion from their choices of when to go for two-point conversions; perhaps basketball coaches should have grids to decide when to consider a game unwinnable. Down 10 points with 48 seconds left is not a throw-in-the-towel scenario.
*Texas A&M: Down 12 with 35 seconds left (astonishingly, the Aggies didn't foul once in that comeback)
*USC: Down 5 with 2.8 seconds left

If you look at play-by-play, you will see the Bison down by 16 points with less than 2 minutes to play. Then you'll see the Bison down by 2 with about 1 minute left, following a 14-0 run. In the final minute, St. Francis only went 1-6 from the line, but Griffin - with BU down by three - missed two potential game-tying threes. The Bison ran 14 second off the clock looking for the first three - which may have been bad strategy. Down three points, you don't need to look for a three until there are less than 10 seconds left.

Bucknell scored 14 points in 53 seconds to get within 2. They had five consecutive steals of inbounds passes. IIRC they missed a couple FTs in there or might have tied the game. About half the crowd had left before the 2 minute mark. Luckily we decided the stick it out.
