Finals week? Prolonged "try outs" by new coaching staff? Lack of team chemistry, or lack of chemistry between staff and players? Talent deficit? We seem to be going backwards from the first few games.

Totally agree with Lion Fan that usually a three-big lineup doesn't work defensively against a three-guard offense at the mid-majors level. However, there are, of course, exceptions, to every rule, and in this case, we must keep in mind that both Petrasek and Meisner, and for that matter, Coby and McComber are all much more comfortable playing on the wing then nearer the basket. Hunter who is a combo forward/guard, is also perfectly suited to play outside, and Adlesh and Killingsworth (off the bench) can help. Assuming that the season until now has been one great coaching experiment, surely it makes sense to see what would happen over the next month if the Lions started Tape at center, Petrasek and Meisner at the wings and Hickman and Smith at the guards. Hunter would then be Key Sixth, Coby and McComber, the wing reserves, Voss, the center reserve and Adlesh, Davis and Killingsworth the key back-up guards. As someone said on this Board last week, the Lions have tried to put a round peg in a square hole and it ain't working.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Columbia has a new coach. And once more: COLUMBIA HAS A NEW COACH. He's getting to know the players. The players are getting to know him. Also, he seems to be instituting new systems at both ends of the floor. That being the case, the current state of affairs was the most likely outcome for this season. Engles is an excellent coach, and Columbia has good talent. So next year will almost certainly be better. In the meantime, try to relax. Enough with the hand-wringing and teeth gnashing.

Tape may have the highest upside of anybody on that team. Luke is a stretch 4, Meisner a stretch 3. Neither is a banger. We talk about our bigs guarding a quicker SG. How about a quicker SG trying to guard Luke or Lukas? Coby can bang inside, and we can get Voss to give us 8 minutes a game. All I know, as the round peg square hole observer, is that whatever we are doing now results in the whole being less than the sum of its parts.

Something is the matter with this team, and it's not just a new coach getting to know new players. If that were true, there might be some unexpected losses, but the broad trajectory would not be so emphatically downward--from KenPom 170 after the victory over Stony Brook to KenPom 233 in a mere four weeks. One would think that in the process of introducing a new system, we would at least occasionally see some flashes of the team's potential. In the last 4 weeks, however, those signs have gotten scarcer and scarcer.

I'm beginning to think that Chet's explanation is what is actually going on.
