The Maine thrust!

The only thing that matters in this game is getting the W. This is the last home game versus an opponent rated lower than the Green. Don't expect this to be any easier than any other game they've played, so it's hard to get excited by Maine's lower kenpom rank. Maine has wins over D-I opponent, of which one was a common opponent in Longwood at Longwood's gym! Maine also holds the stats advantage in most categories that matter. Hopefully we can start to extend those good first halves into the second half of this game.

More Please!

One of the brighter spots from the Vermont game was Brendan Barry got some real time on the floor and he was solid! He took care of the ball and can shoot it. He can get up and down the court too and is pretty efficient with his dribble. He's worth keeping an eye on. If he can play some solid defense he might be the answer at the PG spot. Sentiment: cautiously optimistic.

Ike & Wes gave coach McLaughlin solid minutes in the Vermont game. If that turns into something reliable it will take the pressure off of Evan. That position is currently played by committee (Ike, Wes, and Carter) Whomever shows up and makes heads-up plays seems to stay on the court.

Points of contention.

Execution in the half court is critical. If the Green aren't going to get much in fastbreak points or points off turnovers they have got to execute.

Looking back at the earlier games the Green are pretty slow getting up and down. Since Evan is the focal point even if the ball gets advanced up court it often waits for him to get to his spot. There aren't too many fastbreak opportunities. Conversely the Green don't play transition defense. Streaking guards and centers routinely take advantage of the Green's lack of foot speed and poor lateral movement. Get in a STANCE!!! All this is exacerbated by the still high T/O rate.

They lost again.

An ill advised 3 at the end and óle style defense by the backcourt. But that was just the end of the game. You can only expect so much help from the side. Opposing guards are feasting. You have to question the leadership at this point. You can't put this on the players. Cormier and his and staff knew where they were, what they were working with, and managed to cobble wins together. The drop off from last year to this year is incomprehensible.

Outside of Atlas aka Evan the young players have all been solid. What they lack in experience they more than make up for in energy and desire. But that's more for building for the future. Now we just need to win some games. 0-8 without some ownership, accountability, or leadership prompts bigger questions.

I got there a little late and Dartmouth was down 13-11. Then they just cruised to a big lead (8 pts?) and I thought they had the game in hand. There was some good outside shooting in the first half.
Then in the second half, things fell apart. When Evan is not out there, the offense is different. He does a lot, setting picks, rebounding, outside shots etc. I liked a few plays by the other big guy Emery but it's different when he's out there as opposed to Evan. Overall disappointing game. I do think that they should be doing better. We'll see...

That was pretty much the mantra for the football team this past season.

It was reported a few days ago that a BCS scholarship QB is transferring to Dartmouth. Maybe the basketball team will likewise get a surprise gift in the offseason....

Yes, that would be great. I wonder if the QB arrival has anything to do with recent staff changes in football.

WIth regards to hoops, they have some talent right now. I like the way Emery attacked the rim after getting the rebound. I am hoping they'll start playing better together. Overall it was a much more pleasant game to watch than Fairfield.

One comment is that although I know it's academic break, it would be nice to see some students in the stands. It was great to see that for soccer against ST Francis.

What do you propose?

I think we all knew that Cormier was an excellent Xs and Os coach. Sheehy believed (perhaps with some justification) that Cormier had a ceiling. Sheehy gambled that a coaching change could take Dartmouth to the proverbial next level.

Thus far, it looks like the decision was awful. I agree that the new staff needs a few years to implement their own vision of Dartmouth basketball. But surely they should be doing better than this...

Cormier may be one of the best X and Os coaches that the IVYs have seen in the past 20 (30?) years. Times change and the "intangibles" that were not important 20 years ago become more salient. I think relating to players is really important, especially for non scholarship players. I think we hit that ceiling. For what it's worth, the players seemed very upbeat during the summer and the camp that my son attended. I am hoping that the coaches and team can pull together and start winning. I was hoping that would have been yesterday.

On another note we beat UNH in hockey

I've been following Big Green basketball for some time now and reading this forum as well (1st time commenting). Here's my take: A solid core returned from last year and we have some good rookies. The talent is there but the mix/rotation is off a bit. Johnson was misplaced at the PG spot. He's naturally a two guard and will excel there. Fleming is a solid PG and Barry is showing well, however defensively the backcourt is weak. Getting Cam Smith in the mix more will help the backcourt defensively and add speed/pace to offense (would love to see what Cam and Barry would look like together). Wright is off and on right now, look for him to really take off (hopefully at Hartford). Emery should definitely see more time, as his length, rebounding, and rim protection are sorely needed.

Not a comprehensive assessment here, just some observations. The coaches can't give them what they need most right now, the missing element (as I see it) is team chemistry. They have to trust each other and genuinely care for one another. The Ws will follow.

Looking ahead at the schedule we are conceivably on pace for a repeat of the 1916-17 schedule.

Through 8 games and we are now just seeing that Barry can ball and Will has hutzpah? These kids had to have demonstrated talent well before that. It didn't just show up the first time played in a real game. The coaches spent the first 5 games trying to make a point guard out of a 2 guard like [easygreen1] said. Admittedly, Coach McLaughlin said he wasn't an expert on his team in the preseason interview. Yet from my non scientific census I can tell most folks here recognize that the rooks have game. Even upperclassmen such as Cam have talent and there are definitely situations that the coaches should leverage those talents. We only get to see these guys in flashes in games the coaches should see them daily.

You have to assess what you have and put in a system to fit your players. There are times where guys look out of sorts. It looks like they are trying to implement a system, particularly on the defensive end, that players aren't built for. It's very hard to watch opposing team's guards have season or career highs against our guys. The Coach Ks and the Popovichs seemingly can make adjustments and maximize what they have. Granted we don't have any of those caliber players or coaches but that's the direction we should be heading at all times. Coach up and play to our strengths.

My concern now would be about player morale. If the loss to Maine was disheartening to us fans it could be devastating to the players. Maine was a winnable game. We just have to keep supporting the players and pray the coaches find their way to some Ws.

Unfortunately, I dont have much to say thats different than what has been said. Emery and Barry were great in their limited action. I don't understand not playing them as it seems like at this point we really have nothing to lose.

I think player morale is definitely something to worry about. I don't want a long string of losses to demolish any momentum we had built over the last few seasons.

I just watched the highlights and saw where Smith gets the and-1 on a one man fast break. What was also in that clip was Emery was the next fastest Dartmouth player down court. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! How is it we have a 6-9 player who runs the court and he's hasn't been out there.

So here's my line-up.

Start:
1 Barry 2. G.Smith 3. Wright 4. Boudreaux 5. Emery

1st off the bench pick'em:

1a. Sistare/Fleming 2a.C.Smith/Johnson 3a. Carter/Johnson 4a. Dickenson/Carter 5a. Ngwudo/Dickenson

I would like to see what these look like on the floor:

1. Barry 2. G.Smith 3. Carter 4. Boudreaux 5. Emery

This would be interesting too:

1. Sistare 2. Barry 3. G.Smith/Wright 4.Carter 5. Emery

I think we have some PLAYAZ! They just need to play.

I've watch several seasons of big green basketball and every highlight video of the players I could find online I'm OCD like that.

Boudreaux was a BALLER!!! attending top 100 camps and a McDAA nominee. The other MCDAA nominees are no less impressive gets for Dartmouth. There's tons of video of Carter on YouTube. I saw a video of him playing versus Duke's 5* 1&Done. OMG!!! Barry was PHENOMENAL in HS. Sistare came from a top prep program that feeds the IVY. Sistare played for big time AAU team and won major State tourneys. These guys had great competition in high school and routinely played with and against some of the best current D-I stars. Dartmouth has players! Nothing I've seen from any of these players indicates that their HS experience hasn't translated to the D-I level.

Barry's runner down the lane in versus Maine. You can't teach that. His two DEEP threes in his second outing very consistent with what I saw in HS. Sistare's bulldog mentality and passion is the stuff you want. Carter's brief run in the ODU game was enough for me. We need to get these guys going ASAP.

I just did a search on Carter and he played in the Pangos All-American there are a lot of big name players who attended.

The Elephant in the room.

After looking at my suggested line-up I realized that I wasn't honest with the data. An issue is that Wright has not been up to form. Despite his previous exploits his production through 8 games doesn't justify the usage. The Green desperately need him to return to his Frosh/Soph level.

Wright plays the 2nd most minutes behind Boudreaux. He's 2nd behind Boudreaux in attempts per game but is shooting a team low across the board relative to the minutes played 34% 2pt & 25% 3pt. I'd move a 3a. guy (Johnson/Carter) up or at least distribute the mins more. Johnson seems to be good at attacking the basket and would be my first pick to take over some of those minutes.

So my revised line-up would be:

1 Barry 2. G.Smith 3. Johnson 4. Boudreaux 5. Emery

And if he could get back to the way he played the last three games of his freshman season, we'd probably have a winning record now.

Wright is so athletic (and has so much potential) that it makes no sense to me that he doesn't at least produce on the defensive end and make himself a net positive on the court. So far this season, he seems to have a tendency for poor decision making- often resulting in driving into 3 guys or a contested 3.

Replacing him with Taylor, however, may not be the move. If he becomes just a spot up 3-shooter/slasher, then maybe it could be a move for the better. That being said, his inability to hold onto the ball and desire to take tough shots (notice any similarities) don't make me too optimistic.

But hey, at this point whatever works! I'd love to get proven wrong.

Ok, if not Johnson how about Carter. Who else on the team could slot into the 3 spot to take some of the responsibility off Wright?

I'd love to see Carter in there. I posted some PER stuff in another thread, but I'm not sold on Wright and think we would be better off distributing some of his minutes.
