Strange start time 5pm on ESPNU. Joe Lunardi does the radio broadcast for the Hawks so hopefully Tigers play well and get some free publicity.
Hawks may or may not have their best big guy who has missed 7 straight games with foot injury, Demerey. They are very strong at guard position with their best player average 20 points per game -- reminds you a little bit of VCU Lewis. Martelli's team has gotten off to a slow start, 4-4 although they did crush Columbia.
Vegas has Tigers as 7 1/2 point favorites -- seems high but they finally have home court.
Henderson did a good job of scheduling quality games against teams that the Tigers could win if they played well but it has not happened yet, i.e. BYU, VCU and Cal rather than playing the Miami and Marylands of the world that they played last year.

The next few games will be big psychologically. These are teams that Princeton can and should beat, and SJU is at home for a change. Last year the Hawks' defense was terrific. I'm hoping Weisz can continue to play at a high level off the Liberty game and find whatever open guys or mismatches present themselves. And of course I want to see the grinding, consistent defensive effort we've seen for most of the last three games.

Caruso has ankle injury. Not on bench. Stephens playing well in his place. Down by 5 at half could be much worse. Poor defense plus crazy good shooting by at joes. Lousy ft shooting once again.

The defense has been good on only a fraction of the possessions, with the Hawks getting the ball in deep a lot and securing like 7 ORs on not too many misses. They've also hit a bunch of mid-range jumpers, which appear to be their comfort zone. I agree with color guy Cuff that PU ought to be changing up its defense more to get them out of rhythm.
Offensively, we had a Bell sighting on a drive to the hoop, which was nice to see. Three or four missed layups, in the absence of a shot-blocking threat, is frustrating, as is the poor FT shooting. Love Cannady's offensive swagger and the opportunistic fast-breaking by the team. Brennan is playing better than I've seen this year, Miller off for some reason, Gladson OK. Stephens continues to impress me. Young pressing his offense a bit, but he did hit a nice drive. PU needs Cook and Weisz to pick it up in the second half.

Poor start to the second half for the Tigers. Give up two open threes and penetration, blow three close-in shots. Stephens's three the only bright spot in the first three minutes.

Hawks killing the Tigers on the offensive boards. Many of these are on the same possession, so the second-chance points aren't quite as bad, but geez. But then Cook with a circus layup while being fouled, and he makes his third FT in a row. Then a steal off the press and a Cook dunk to cut the lead to five with about 10:20 to go.

Brennan on great curl move to the hoop after the St. Joes timeout. Need a stop and a score now. Get the stop but not the score.

Weisz big trey for the Tigers' first lead. Then a stop and a couple of fouls on the Hawks, nice drive by Stephens doesn't fall.

PU now outplaying SJ on both ends, forcing bad shots, getting the DRs, then getting good shots (but unfortunately not hitting them yet). At least Stephens gets to go to the FT line.

Why does PU take two contested 17 footers after eschewing those when they are open? Loss of composure. Meanwhile the Hawks scratch and claw for a couple of buckets and lead by three with 1:18 to go. Officials not helping much with missed traveling call and letting the Hawks grab cutters all game.

Cook misses front end of one-and-one and commits an immediate foul for his fourth PF. Now down five after the FTs. Looking grim and then Cannady turns it over with :52 left. Another Hawks bucket against the press, then a poor possession and a bad foul by Cook who fouls out, and the Hawks can just knock it in at the FT line to salt it away.

The only good news from this game is that Brennan looked much better. Otherwise, a real lack of enthusiasm and execution in the first half and a collapse at the end.

Each time you see a teammate miss a three, you tighten up a bit inside. Soon everyone is tight, and starts driving to the hoop against a collapsing defense.
If you are going to drive, protect the ball so you have to be fouled if a strip is attempted. And if a foul is called, you gotta make the foul shots.
Oh, and kick out, rather than take the pull up jumper.

I was at floor level and it is hard to pick up if they are playing tight --- I suspect so. It did hurt not having Caruso and the Tigers needed another rebounder and Caruso can get rebounds.
Cannady and Young had wide open 3s with a three point lead.
Cook, Weisz, Stephens and Cannady are the heart of the team. Miller has clearly fallen out of Henderson's favor as he gets yanked when he has a screw up and in fairness, he has screwed up plenty.
Time now to focus on getting ready for Ivy League play by going back to the drawing board. Will they have Caruso ready for league play? May simply not be their year although there is time to recover. My gut says no but I have been wrong many times.

Cannady was still and wide open for his corner 3, and it was half way down and rattled out.
Young was still moving to his right as he received the ball, and although wide open, was not fully set.
The single most disappointing play to me was when Bell stopped his drive and pulled up for the J.

Just back from attending my annual Tiger bball game while my wife visits her Maryland clan. Disappointing game sandwiched by long round trip drive from Baltimore. Any criticism of team/coach/game dwarfed initially by news of injury to over performer Henry Caruso. Then, while cruising down scenic I-95 looking for something on the radio, I had my nose rubbed in reports of civilian deaths in Aleppo, bulldozing of poor communities in Nigeria, and finally, the onslaught of fake news. It put everything in perspective. We lost a basketball game ... myeh!
I must hurry home to the peace and sanity of my little mountain town. I don't know how people survive the speed, madness and materiality of this part of the country when being constantly informed of the horrors surrounding them over which they have little if any control.
May we all be better people in 2017.
