Looks like Engles landed commitment number 5 for next year, Jake Klores, a senior PG at Riverdale Country Day in the Bronx. Spent some time at IMG Academy in Florida, and played strong AAU summer ball. Had an offer from Yale. Looks like he has a good outside shot and a strong work ethic.

He's slender and just 6' so let's hope the offer from Yale means something, because otherwise when camps and/or tournaments are reviewed, he's well down the list in enthusiasm.

Our Ivy opponents are going hard after 4 and 5 star recruits. If we have now filled the class and our highest ranked recruit is at 3.5 stars (Fauld). I'm not sure how much that means since Maodo Lo was not ranked, but it does appear that HYPP are all aiming higher than we appear to be aiming. I am starting to wonder if Levien is a real negative.

I don't mean to be harsh, but that's my point. I'm sure he's a good kid, and I'm pleased he's coming to Columbia, but if HYPP are getting higher ranked players, then we either have to recruit at that level, or hope we stumble Maodo Lo-like, onto undiscovered gems.

Recruiting has become much more competitive. However no one is picking up 5 star recruits. There have been successes in the 3-4 star level, with Harvard's current freshman class full of them.
Pulling in even one 3-4 star recruit in a class is still pretty good, provided the class also include a couple of under the radar 2's - guys who scouts like a lot even though the recruiting sites underrated them or missed them entirely. I haven't been following recruiting as much as I used to so don't know how the incoming 2017 class stacks up.

Recruiting rankings can be way off especially "further down" the line you go. With this kid his competition level is low and his AAU team, the prolific RENS is founded, financed and run by his father

I'm in line with TheLine on this one. Sometimes it is better to have an incoming class with one 3-4 star recruit then a class with numerous 3-4's who end up competing with one another for playing time. In Columbia's case, Foulds is clearly the centerpiece of the incoming class and Brumant could be a tremendous player as well despite his 2 star rate. Hanson and Steffanelli strike me as good prospects too. Having not seen Klores it is difficult to project much, but at the very least he will add some depth in the backcourt. Also,I believe it is important to note that his commitment does not mean that the Lions have completed their incoming class. The trend seems to be towards larger roster numbers in the Ivy League so I would expect the Lions to add two more commits to the incoming class.

Given that Yale has a recruit at the position already, I would hazard a guess that the offer doesn't mean too much (if true). That said, Columbia's class looks pretty good to me. I'll take Hanson among the 2 star guys.
Other schools appear to have done some fishing in the 4-5 star pool, but no bites.

Yes, that makes sense--first Faulds, and then Hanson, because he's 6'5" and supposedly among the top 5-10 recruits coming out of Minnesota. Brumant has a lot of potential too, but based at least on demonstrated observables (40 pts. in a hs game), Hanson places next.

FWIW, I remember seeing an article in the Sports Illustrated Vault from 1971 or so. Lou Carnesecca, then coach of St. John's, was quoted saying that a quarter of the "blue chip" basketball recruits in the country that year went to Ivy League schools.

Sometimes coaches fill out the bottom of their rosters for reasons which are not immediately apparent and may not have much to do with actual basketball potential. I'm not saying that this is what happened here; I just don't know.

Havent seen the kid in person, but took a look down his twitter and instagram pages, and looks like he was pretty impressive at the peach jam over the summer against mostly big time recruits. Build and size worries me a little, but if he played like that against that type of competition, hopefully he can be an impact guy in the ivy's

Video of his team playing last year. Jake is the short white dude. There are some highlights with him but not many.

Our first four committed recruits have all tweeted, in a format that looks similar to the tweets used by the football recruits. Looks like the AD has established a format for the recruits themselves to announce their commitments, since the school cannot do so until May.

It's been my contention that while Columbia is spending $7 billion constructing their Harlem campus, that they should spend another $50 million on a new 10,000 seat multi-sport arena.

Faulds is by now probably a four star guy based upon his senior year and his 4 rating by ESPN. But I agree with the premise that we could use a new arena in the 6,000 seating capacity range. I would prefer to see it on campus rather than in the Manhattanville campus.

Is there anyplace to put it on the current campus?
And isn't all the Manhattanville land already allocated? It seemed that way when I passed the construction site a couple of months ago.
