Hampton is 2-9 and appears to be a guard oriented team. Little size; similar to Liberty, although probably not as talented.
Would not be surprised if Coach tries to get additional playing time for guys that he may need in the regular season and more importantly, IL tournament time. He probably needs to sort out the Center position as well as backup forward.

Tigers' superior athleticism showing early, but a few sloppy plays. Glad they're loose and confident, but I'd like to see them destroy this team.

Some dumb fouls and three traveling calls already, but the outside shooting has been good and the passing is improving. Nice find of Brennan isolated in the low post on a smaller defender gets him fouled.

Up five with 3:53 to go in the half. Giving up horrible ORs to the shorter Pirates and sailing passes to no one in particular, guys knocking each other off of rebounds and alley-oops. Not a great mental game so far.

After an aggravating half, a nice two-for-one call by MH leads to a good drive by Bell and follow tip by Brennan to give the Tigers a one-point halftime lead. PU needs to wake up and rebound and get their heads in the game.

A lot sharper after the break. Cannady finds Weisz for the wide-open trey at the end of the shot clock, then a steal and a fast-break bucket with Brennan putting it on the floor and Euro-stepping for the layup. Up seven early in the half, force Hampton to call a timeout.

A couple of threes wrapped around a forced TO push the lead to 11, but the Pirates' Marrow once again makes a tough shot to cut the lead to nine. Tigers looking good, and with Stephens sitting with three fouls.

Lead slowly growing, with Weisz having an excellent offensive game passing and shooting. Brennan active and getting penalized by the officials for it, but only two fouls. Stephens sitting with four fouls. Both teams in the penalty with 7:50 left.

Up 28 with 3:06 left. The D has been very effective in the second half, getting steals and forcing bad shots. Hampton still attacking the offensive boards and getting their hands on too many balls, but not capturing and converting them.

And a 28-point win with the benches of both teams cleared over the last two minutes. Fun second half for a PU fan. If they'd started the game locked in, this could have easily been a forty-plus point margin.

Defense did pick it up in the 2nd half although Hampton's sloppy ball handling certainly contributed. 1st half was very disappointing but at least, the Tigers reversed the role by finishing very strong after a slow start.
It was interesting to see Brennan start the 2nd half but he deserved it as it was his strongest game as a Tiger. He is actually showing some confidence both offensively and defensively. Arirguzoh and Gladson contributed as well. Coach put out 2 bigs on the floor for several minutes which will be needed against Harvard and tournament teams if they get in.
Weisz had 17 pts, 7RB, 5 Steals and 3 assists. One of the most important items is that Tigers shot 81% FT with Cook 10 of 12. Weisz, Cook, Cannady and Stephens remain consistent contributors.
Cannot read much from this game other than Brennan and Arirguzoh are emerging while Bell and Miller are not returning to prior year form.

In fairness to Miller, he isn't getting nearly enough minutes in a row to get into a rhythm or really to be assessed. His defense will be needed in league play, and he contributed a steal and a couple of assists. I assume that the other bigs are outperforming Miller in practice. Bell had an OK game against Hampton despite his poor shooting. Brennan looked more relaxed and natural offensively, and had three of the Tigers' nine two-point FGs. Cannady looked more like a PG than usual. Stephens canned some dreaded mid-range jumpers.
The weird thing is that after pounding the paint and dominating the boards against Bucknell, the Tigers got 14 of 23 made FGs from three and rebounded poorly against the shorter Pirates.

My biggest concern in my limited view of the team this year (St Joseph) is its inclination to shoot threes before establishing its inside game. Great when they are dropping, but not so good when they aren't (usually on the road). It seemed that last year we had a much stronger inside game, so that when we went outside we got unpressured shots. I don't like our over dependence on the outside game. So it is encouraging to see some development of our inside offense. It can't happen too soon.

I agree with you that the Tiger's play has not been consistent.
With their outside/in game, the risk with an IL Tournament is that they do not hit their 3 pt shots back to back in with a very tight window between games. Needless to say, if they hit 3 pt shots back to back, life will be much better.
I think that they need to keep working on an inside game especially with missing Caruso as he brought some of that to the table. From the beginning, I thought that Mitch should try to get two bigs on the floor at the same time. It is possible with either Brennan or Gladson on the floor with either Miller or Arirguzoh. Cook is going more and more to the hoop which is a plus as he shot 12FT against Hampton.
At the end of the day, the Tigers fate will probably be controlled by Cook and Weisz with Cannady and Stephens in the mix.

I feel like the bigs are very tentative about posting up and trying offensive moves, because if they miss then they are conscious that there was a foregone trey attempt for someone else (or possibly a drive) with a purportedly higher effective FG%. But I don't think they'd miss as often if they took more close-in shots and got in rhythm.
That would take a lot of pressure off the wing guys to generate a score each time down the floor and it would keep shot blockers a little bit honest since they'd be in position to crash the boards weak side (or receive an interior pass when their man slid away to go for the block). MH made a comment at the beginning of the season about not wanting to overcoach or make things too complicated with this experienced group, but perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to encourage the team to try to get more post touches and for the big men to do something with it. Brennan managed to sneak in three buckets against Hampton from the inside, but it wasn't really part of the primary offensive flow.

Right now, if we miss the three, no points, probably no foul and no rebound. If we miss inside, possible rebound and possible foul. In addition, the defense must stay honest. So, less pressure if ball is kicked out for an open three. Something, at least, is gained by starting the inside game. Nada, if we come up court and miss a three.

Miller was utilized much more last year as a passer although he played near the foul line rather than near the basket. Surprising, Arirguzoh has shown the most aggressiveness in getting the ball near the basket and going to the hoop and Brennan is getting better.
In fairness, after watching several of the Ivy League teams shooting touch this year, the Tigers outside shooting -- Cook, Cannady, Weisz and Stephens looks pretty darn good. There are some pretty ugly looking shooting strokes out there in the IL.

Don't forget the Columbia game in NYC. Miller scored 20 (career high) and had double figure rebounds. Cannady got the ink for his heroics at the end but it was Miller who by himself kept us in the game.
