Boys Basketball: Rumson tries to continue winning culture created by Brendan Barry

A player like Brendan Barry does not come around every so often.

In New Jersey's private school dominated boys basketball culture, Barry made kids in Rumson have a reason to stay home.

"He could've gone to any of the private schools around here," Rumson-Fair Haven coach Chris Champeau said. "He chose to go here. The impact of that was something that we've been trying to get across since I came here seven years ago. At Rumson the academics are great and the basketball is second to none so for kids to come here, good things can happen. Brendan Barry came in my third year. He had a great run...He had every kid in town wanting to be the next Brendan Barry."

With 1,812 career points, Barry left Rumson as the school's all-time leading scorer. He also tallied 50 points in a 71-49 win over Middletown North last season to mark the first time in 14 years that a Shore Conference player achieved the feat. The single-game performance also set the school record for most points in a game, boys or girls. The record was previously held by Virginia Sourlis. He also received the 2016 Kerwin Award, which honors the most outstanding boys and girls basketball player down the Shore.

Barry's accolades were not just personal ones.

With him in the lineup, Rumson went 63-24, according to games reported to njschoolsports.com. He lead Rumson to the Central Jersey, Group 2 championship in 2014 and brought his school its first-ever Shore Conference Tournament title when he put in 27 points, 25 of which came in the second half, to upset Shore powerhouse Christian Brothers Academy, 50-24, in 2015.

While success followed him on the court, the kids in town began to imitate him.

"I remember he had a semi-fade, kind of mohawk hair cut one year," Champeau said. "Then 300 kids at camp were wearing their hair in whatever style that Brendan Barry was wearing his. I definitely saw a bunch of kids, maybe in prior years, that might've been on the fence about going to Rumson that have come here. We really haven't lost one kid to a neighboring private school."

Like every great high school player, Barry's high school career inevitably came to an end. He now suits up for Dartmouth.

With its star guard graduated, it becomes time for the kids who looked up to Barry to pick up where he left off. Highlighting the group returning for Rumson this year is junior center Elijah McAllister, senior guard Michael O'Connor, junior guard Teddy Sourlis and senior Tyler Pierson.
