Ten point lead at half time. Should be 16-18. One problem that needs to be fixed if McComber is going to get minutes: for a guy who can apparently shoot from outside he has badly missed four free throws in a row.

Columbia is leading Maine 49-39 at halftime in a game where the Lions should be ahead by at least 20 points, but for whatever reason the coaching staff is playing guys like McComber and Killingsworth who are having all kinds of problems on the floor rather than Coby, Adlesh and Smith who helped the Lions to a much larger lead. Maine's best player, Fleming, is under the weather so Maine has no one who can defend Petrasek and Coby under the basket and not a single guard who can defend Hickman or Smith. Nevertheless, McComber is on the floor instead of Coby and while it is wonderful that he finally using his height underneath the fact that he can't shot foul shots is a definite problem. Tape made a cameo appearance for about 30 second, took one shot and then was yanked. Why he is not playing rather than McComber is puzzling. Hunter could probably score twenty points against this team in the second half if they gave hin the ball rather than Killingsworth who lacks the athleticism to match up with even Maine. No matter what, Columbia should win this game because Maine cannot reasonably match up with our three top players, Petrasek, Hickman and Smith. However, if we keep giving the ball to Killingsworth and McComber Maine might very well win this game.

98-73 win going away. Rodney Hunter played very well in limited minutes. Tape was given even less time, for reasons that baffle me. Smith and Petrasek were the best players on the court. Hickman was decent. Killingsworth and Adlesh played reasonably well. Coby missed too many easy shots. McComber is a small forward in the body of a PF. He does not play well inside. Our size really was the story.

Well the Lions played an excellent second half in an 98-73 victory over an outmanned Maine squad that did a good job of competing with Columbia in the first half but ran out of steam afterwards. Credit Jake Killingsworth for rewarding Coach Engles' confidence in him by shooting extremely well in the second half. And give credit to freshman point guard, Mike Smith for another outstanding performance--23 points, 3 assists and zippo turnovers. Credit also the Lions and particularly Chris McComber for shooting lights out from 3 pointl land, even though we continue to wish for Chris to do more inside. So with just one more non-conference -game ahead (Howard next Saturday), Columbia's season, starts in earnest in twelve days at Cornell.

Hunter looked more comfortable overall in this game, made a big time score, played flawless defense, and, as usual, rebounded extremely well. Obviously, Rodney is one of our key players as the Ivy League season begins. I suppose Jake Killingsworth will start both games against Cornell, and hopefully will defend well against Cornell's three guards, whether in a man-to-man or a zone. However, it seems likely that Rodney and for that matter CJ. and Quinton, will see plenty of action.

If Hunter can develop an outside shot he will be unstoppable. Had to believe he is only 6'5"; he plays like a guy several inches taller. And I really do not have understand why Tape doesn't get more minutes. I am starting to feel better about our chances in the IL. Smith looks like he is already one of the best PGs in the league, and Petrasek presents more match-up problems than any other IL front court player. While we have lost several winnable games, I think we are now starting to click and should get another lift when Meisner gets back. And against smaller teams like Maine, when we put in our big front court it is very had to score against us.

PS, according to the box score Tape played a grand total of two minutes. What is going on here? A twenty five point not blow out and he barel gets any PT.

I suppose the coaching staff wanted to give some more playing time to two other bigs, Voss and McComber. Maybe they are trying to hide him until Ivy League play begins. Cornell doesn't seem to have anyone on its roster who could defend against Tape or for that matter Petrasek, Coby, Voss or Meisner. However, Cornell has several good guards, namely Morgan, Hatter, Whiteside and Smith, so the Lions will certainly have to outscore them in the paint and dominate them on the Boards. We will need Hunter on both offense and defense because he matches up very well with the Cornell guards. Cornell's offense is totally guard oriented and the Lions and particularly Smith have to be prepared for Cornell on both sides of the ball. Do you remember how Hatter bumped Lo all the time when he brought the ball up the court?

Tape had three fouls in two minutes of play. Just not ready for prime time -- yet. Wondering if Eberle will see the court this year. Injured or not ready?
