I had assumed tonight's game against McGill at Lavietes would be an opportunity to dole out minutes. I may have been mistaken.

McGill almost beat Wichita St. earlier this year in Montreal. Played under FIBA rules, the game was very physical. Wichita St. rallied to a come from behind 77-71 victory in what was apparently a very physical game, but did so only after the Shockers coach was ejected. In the video, Wichita St. coach Marshall really went after the refs in the middle of the court:

Here was his post game explanation:
"There were players with stitches, concussions, not keeping score accurately, a bloodbath, then touch fouls on us," Marshall told ESPN's Andy Katz on Wednesday. "I'm not happy nor proud of the reaction but when is enough, enough? I want my players to know I've got their back. Once ejected, I wanted the ref to know exactly my impression of his work."

Hope everyone emerges healthy. Also hope Harvard did not commit to a home and home arrangement!

After a sloppy first half, Harvard picked up the pace in the second half, outscoring McGill 45-23 en route to a 70-45 victory. My concerns almost became a reality though as McGill's 6'11" center swung his elbow across Zena's face, bloodying his nose and sending him out for most of the first half. Zena returned in the second half a bit more aggressive (nose stuffed with gauze) to help spur the onslaught. Bryce Aiken was on the bench in a suit and did not play. Siyani probably played his fewest minutes of the year. Egi started and was initially effective (4pts/4rbs on first shift).

McGill was as physical and chippy as advertised. Rakes across the arms and face seemed to be the defensive scheme against driving Crimson players. McGill was whistled for 27 fouls, most of them obvious and aggressive. No foul was called on the elbow swung into Zena's nose which drew blood (leading to timeout so the court could be cleaned). On the last foul, a McGill defender literally tried to wrestle Chris Lewis from behind after Lewis grabbed a defensive board. Seemed like the ref's allowed it hoping that the guy would back off so they wouldn't have to call yet another foul. He didn't, so they did. Even announcer's wondered why nothing had been called initially.

Glad the Crimson escaped relatively unharmed. Had this game been played in Montreal under FIBA rules with home cooked refs and scorekeepers, I can understand how Wichita State's coach went bonkers.

McGill is far more physical and undisciplined than any Ivy squad. Can't shoot either. Not sure what was gained.

Marshall's biggest beef up in Montreal was that the scorer was failing to register the Shockers' points at the end and the refs wouldn't fix it. That's real home cooking.
