1st Break:
Cornell 5
Coumbia 12

Cornell started 5-2, Columbia on 10-0 run.

Morgan has not had a shot. Red have committed 5 turnovers in my estimation.

Lions have 4 from Hickman, 2 each from Smith, Hunter, Petrasek and Coby. Most are easy layups.

4th Break:
Cornell 29
Columbia 30

Jack Gordon has come out of nowhere to hit 3 threes in a row in the last few minutes.

Cornell now 7-15 from three (Hatter is 1-5). Columbia is 2-7 from three.

Since the first few minutes, Lions have not been able to go inside.

Smith has 7 and Petrasek has 9 for Lions.

Halftime:
Cornell 32
Columbia 37

Cornell shooting 41% overall and 47% from three (8-18). 10 assists on 13 baskets. 16 rebounds (4 offensive, 12 defensive). 8 turnovers (5 in first 4+ minutes). FT were 0-1.

Morgan with 2 fouls, sat out last 10+ minutes - zero points, zero shots.

Gettings has 12 points (5-10 overall, 2-3 from three).
Gordon has 9 points (3-3 overall and from three)
Hatter has 3 points (1-6 overall and from three, no drives at all)

Columbia is shooting 53% overall and 33% (3-10) from three. 20 rebounds (5 offensive, 15 defensive). 7 assists on 17 baskets. 6 turnovers. No FT taken.

Petrasek has 11 points and Smith 9. Hickman has 6, most scored in first 4+ minutes. Coby has 2 points and 7 rebounds (and lots of hustle).

Cornell has to be pleased, all in all, to only be down 5 since Morgan has not been a factor at all. They probably are not pleased that they let Columbia score last 7 points after taking 32-30 lead with 2:50 to go.

If Cornell, especially with Morgan coming back, can keep up its strong 3 point shooting, keep Columbia from taking advantage of its inside play, and get Hatter to stop taking threes and start driving the lane, they have a chance in the second half.

I didn't really think much of Gordon scoring 11 against Fisher, but maybe he'll give the Red the shooter they need in league play. Crazy considering he had 5 career points prior to last weekend.

Columbia TO at 17:51 in 2nd half:
Cornell 43
Columbia 37

Cornell starts on 11-0 run to start the half.

So much for my thoughts, Hatter 2-2 from three. Morgan got his first shot, a solid three pointer.

2nd Break:
Cornell 48
Columbia 53

Petrasek with 9 this half (20 for game), and Smith with 4.

3rd Break:
Cornell 57
Columbia 63

Cornell's energy has gone since Hatter's injury. Hatter is now on the bench with his right knee extended. Most likely, will not return.

Morgan got 2nd three pointer, has 6 pts this half.

Cornell commits 6th foul around 10:00 minute mark, so Columbia will be able to get to the line more this half.

4th Break (3:31 to go):
Cornell 64
Columbia 65

Both teams at 9 fouls.

Morgan with 9 this half (3-3 from three). Warren has gotten hot with 7 this half.

Hickman with 7 and Petrasek with 13 this half. Petrasek to shoot two after the break.

Several minute delay when Coby and Fallas got into a shoving match diving for a loose ball. In the end, double technical were called on both and the ball was given to the Lions due to the possession arrow.

Final:
Cornell (4-12, 0-1) 75
Columbia 79 (7-7, 1-0) 79

Game tied at 67 with 3:11 to go on Gordon's fourth three pointer of the day.

Columbia then got an old fashioned three from Petrasek and a layup from Smith to take a 72-67 lead with 2:40 or so to go.

At 75-72, Smith was fouled and surprisingly missed both. Morgan hit two after being fouled on a driving layup and it was 75-74 Lions.

Coach Earl put Desmond Fleming in for defensive purposes and he was able to create a loose ball situation. Cornell came up with it, due to the possession arrow.

With 20 seconds and the ball, Cornell looked to take the last shot for the win. Unfortunately, with around 8 seconds, Whiteside lost his dribble and coughed it up to Petrasek who was fouled.

Over the last several seconds, Columbia hit 4 free throws in a row, while Cornell went 1-2. The Lions escape with a 79-75 victory.

Petrasek with a career high 31 (20 in second half), Hickman with 17 and Smith with 15.

For Cornell, Gettings had 14 (2 in second half), Morgan had 14 (all in second half), and Warren had 11 (9 in second half). Gordon with a career high 13 (4-4 from three).

Free throws were big in the second half, with Cornell going 9-14 and Columbia going 13-17 (Petrasek was 7-7).

Threes, Columbia was 4-16 (25%), while Cornell was 14-31 (45%). Rebounding edge went to Columbia, 37-31, with a 11-8 edge on the offensive side.

Good game for both sides, with Columbia shooting 50% for the day, and Cornell 46%. Cornell did a good job hanging in the game in the first half when Morgan was limited in scoring, and the second half, when Hatter went out with an injury.

Gettings and Warren held their own with Columbia down low, and both showed offensive skills.

For Columbia, Petrasek and Hickman were the difference, as they found a way to win a game that looked to be slipping away.

With close home losses against UMass-Lowell and tonight, the Red need to learn how to find a way to win these games in order to grow as a program.

Not sure I can agree that Gettings and Warren held their own in a game where Petrasek goes for over 30 and the Lions get one of every three available offensive rebounds. But both did look good on the offensive end, especially Stone's 8 assists.

Big questions coming out of this game are:
1) Is Jack Gordon for real, or just "one off" like Donovan Wright at Lafayette?
2) Is Hatter seriously injured?

I thought Gettings and Warren did well with 25 points, 4 offensive rebounds and 9 assists between them.

Gordon has done well recently with the Fisher and Columbia games. However, as you note, Cornell has had a number of games where a new high scorer emerges (Wright, Whiteside, Bathurst). Unfortunately, those players have not been reliable high scorers.

No word on Hatter, that I can find. They have not been very public about these items in the past - no word on Onuorah's illness, Abdur-Ra'oof's rehab, and Morgan's injury in the UMass-Lowell game. Maybe the Daily Sun reporter can get some information.

Don't know if they can stop Petrasek next week, but they may be able to limit Hickman and Smith. Even if they cannot, they should be able to improve the free throw shooting that was 9-15 yesterday.
