Terrific get...hes young, very energetic with a high skill set. I wouldn't bet on Carmody but I did hear that Penn is working very hard with some really good players in the class of 18' who have legit interest

I think the AI hike will dampen what sounds like it could be another ridiculous league-wide 2018 class, but I'm still hearing very bullish things about the 2018 pool. And when the pool is big, there can be lots of winners.

From what I understand, the AI is going from 178 to 183 for the 2018 class. The move was made to recalibrate for the ACT producing what have been seen as inflated AI scores. At least that's what I remember the argument as.
You can envision that as a couple point increase in the ACT or 50 point increase in the SAT. And while it will minorly hurt the league as a whole, it will have an outsized impact on those teams that could fish a lot at the floor and relative benefits for teams that were restricted in the numbers they could take at the floor.

Isn't the AI still a 3 part calculation with the option of counting the SAT twice instead of the subject tests.
If so aren't we talking about the need for a 25 point bump in the SAT?

I guess this means it's official? I'm still waiting on his twitter announcement.

I didn't realize he was born in Princeton. Makes it that much sweeter.

SIMMONS TO PENN 01-16-17 02:51 PM - Post#218501

I would think you should perceive multiple sources confirming this commitment as his official announcement.
Edit: I will also point out that Joe Mihalich retweeted the announcement from Corey Evans of Simmons' commitment pursuant to the NCAA's new rules on social media/recruiting:

This team has been consistently inconsistent all season. They're still very inexperienced, so this should surprise nobody.

I know it feels like we've been talking about him forever, so perhaps these videos have been shared, but here's an old one of Jarrod talking about his early recruiting interest (apparently VCU under Shaka was his first offer):

Also, he has a Hudl page which seems to include many of his games this year:

Mr. James. Why would the league require a higher SAT score if the ACT is the culprit? Just curious.

I believe (and I strongly emphasize believe, because as you know, getting a look at an official document that spells out these rules is a no go) that they use verbal + math + GPA as the 80/80/80, not SAT I Score + SAT I Score or SAT II Score + GPA. Either way, though, you'd still need 50 points.
For instance. Let's say I'm at 590 Math, 590 Verbal and a GPA that translates to a 60. Under the math + verbal + GPA way, that would translate to a 178 (our current bar). Under the SAT I + SAT I + GPA way that would translate to 178 as well (1180/2/10 + 1180/2/10 + 60).
Now, if I raise my Math by 50 points, I'm now at:
640 / 10 + 590 / 10 + 60 = 183 (new bar)
Under the other calc, I'd be at:
(1230 / 2) / 10 + (1230 / 2) / 10 + 60 = 183 (new bar)
So I think you'd be looking at 50 points either way.

A lot to like in those videos from this season - dunks, blocks, and rebounds are a given because he is playing smaller kids, but him hitting 3 pointers and pushing the ball up court is why we should really be excited. What I see in those videos reminds me of Koko Archibong. It will be great to have a player with that skill set again (fun to watch) and seems like a great compliment to Brodeur and Rothschild.

It's the same reason why we saw the jump from 171 to 176 when only the class rank to GPA move was to blame. You could have argued that it would have been more "correct" to keep the bar at 171 for those using class rank and raise it to 176 for those using GPA.
In this iteration, they could have calibrated down the ACT score as it translates to an AI score, but they didn't, they decided to adjust the floor. I think it might just be cleaner and easier to do it that way. I don't have a lot of clarity into the "why," sadly.

You made the right choice. Penn is a wonderful university, and not just because of its basketball team. We all wish you every success on and off the court.

Not the way I understand it to be and not the way others have documented in through the years.
Sat 1 math plus verbal divided by two (drop the last digit) eg 70 plus 60 diviflded by two. 65
Highest Sat 2 plus second highest SAT 2 divided by two again dropping last digit eg 750. And 700. 72
Plus GPA adjusted for curriculum difficulty
Option to use part 1 twice in lieu of using part two

That's the way I always understood the AI too. Just had heard recently that they don't use the section tests anymore. Functionally the calc is the same. Math + Verbal as pieces 1 and 2 or doubling the total for pieces 1 and 2 is the same outcome. Still need 50 pts.
