The Lions lead Brown 47-28 at halftime in a game where the Lions are not only shooting at a terrific 55% rate , but dominating Brown in every other category. Brown seems to have no answer for Lions' huge height advantage, although the visitors cut the Lions lead down a few points near the end of the half when a Lion sub made three errors in less than a minutes. Columbia needs to continue using its height and quickness in the second half to avoid a Brown comeback.

Cooled down, won 83-78. More bench players had double figures than starters.
Pet,Smith,Killingsworth scored big; Voss effective in the D middle.

We let it get uncomfortably close but win 83-78. Best D1 game ever by Voss +14 pts for Killingsworth. Six of the 8 remaining games are on the road, and we are favored in just two of them (Penn at home, Dartmouth away), but if we can win just one more (penn away?) and play out the rest, we can make a plausible claim to 4th place.

"Uncomfortably close" for sure as the Lions violated every known rule about closing out basketball games where you have a big lead such as do not go deep into your bench particularly before the end of the first half; do not shot from the outside; do get the ball to your big men under the basket. We were lucky that Brown didn't accept our gift and we had three players who adhered to the rules--Petrasek, Smith and Meisner.

Great shooting, and lucky with the % of threes that fell in the first half, after that, it was an easier game plan. I agree that the game got uncomfortably close at the end. Two areas for improvement are preventing so many offensive rebounds by our opponents, having meisner and Coby foul less and getting meisners FT % up. Luke and mike smith were incredible and overall it was a good recovery after yesterday's loss. We still have some distance to close out the season top 4, but at this point, we should be favorites for 4th, especially after penn lost to D today. Most important games for us are Dartmouth away, brown away and penn at home. Brown is probably second in contention, so Brown away in particular is probably the most important to try to steal.

Agree with your comments, particularly those pertaining to Luke, Mike, Jeff and Lukas. Luke has been great this season, except i Cornell #2. Mike Smith is incredibly savvy for a freshman point guard. Jeff had a bad weekend. Lukas Meisner had a solid game against Brown. Lukas is Luke's protege, but Lukas has to remember that he needs to play like a power forward. If Meisner got it now, then there will be no stopping the Lions..

We have a problem.. we are a very good first half team but fold like a three dollar suitcase in the second half. Why do we continue to blow big leads in the second half? This isn't a one time thing. We do it time and time again. We frankly cannot seem to close out games. If we could we would be undefeated. This needs to be fixed.

Watching Columbia's defense was fascinating this weekend. A good offense forces a zone xefense into a kknd of risk management. Spread the floor well, and the defense has to choose wbo and where to defend. Yale found a hole inside the foul line and had bigs who could shoot the midra ge jumper from there. Defend that and you open up a spot on the perimeter or under the basket. Brown exploited the perimeter - CU repeatedly had defenders running at a three-point shooter, a bit late, after he had the ball and was set to shoot. The next few games could be decided by adjustments -- opposition scouting tactics against the zone, Engels adjusting, opponent responding and so forth. That is part of what is causing the fluctuation in CU's second half success.

Columbia Leads Brown 47-28 at Haltime 02-05-17 12:03 PM - Post#220591

Columbia took care of business last night. The Lions won a game they had to win. Petrasek and Smith led the offense again.
Jake Killingworth had a breakout game. He seems to play better coming off the bench. But if he continues to play as well as he did last night, he's going to force his way back into the starting line-up. Adlesh and Meisner also played very well off the bench. And even Connor Voss is beginning to contribute, now that he's getting regular minutes.
There's an interesting dichotomy developing between the Ivy League standings and the relative strength rakings for the Ivy teams. Columbia still has a relative percentage index ranking well below that of Penn and Brown according to ESPN, yet we lead Brown in the standing by 2 games, and we lead Penn by 3 1/2 games.
It will be interesting to see how this dichotomy resolves itself. Will Columbia fall behind Brown and Penn in the standing once they have to play more away games in a tougher part of their schedule? Or will Columbia's RPI ranking improve as they secure 4th place, and a birth in the Ivy tournament? If it's the latter, then that's evidence that RPI rankings are backward looking, with very little predictive value.

All rankings based on past data are, by definition, backward looking. Kenpom probably does the fairest and most accurate job, rpi is an inaccurate measure, any bookie who is aiming for predictive value, will throw RPI out the window. But no formulaic ranking that I know of is forward looking. The AP poll at the start of the season, you could argue, is forward looking, because those polled account for strengths of recruiting class.

Isaac Cohen, as the color man on ILDN, likes Killingsworth's overall game. He's been in contact with Nate.
Adlesh has been on something of a 3-point streak.
More subs scored in double figures than starters.

Glad to hear Cohen is doing color commentary. He certainly played with great anticipation and floor vision, attributes that should serve him well behind the microphone.

Unless I missed it, there was no announcement Isaac is a permanent color commentator or will do more games.
