Unimaginably poor performance on all scores by the Lions in the first half as Penn takes advantage of Columbia's multiple substitution system to take control early. Not to second guess the coach too much, but what was Petrasek doing on the bench early in this contest and why were Coby and Voss on the floor instead of Meisner. And when Meisner is on the floor why isn't he playing near the basket. And, finally why isn't Hickman driving to the basket. Penn is killing us on the offensive board because our guys are not in synch with one another. If the Lions want to win this game, they obviously need to start and Petrasek, Meisner, Hickman, Smith and Hunter in the second half and keep them on the floor intact.

Lions playing better in second half, but Coby is missing everything and does not belong on the floor. Is Engles saving Petrasek for Princeton. Lion may win if right guys stay on the floor for rest of game.

Lions closed the gap completely but couldn't keep up with Penn, lost by about 8.
Coby's play still inexplicable after some earlier good games.

We 100% deserved to lose today. Miserable performance giving up defensive boards, terrible 2pt FG%. Our bigs were miserable. Rodney still can't shoot, too easy to guard him or just ignore him when he's far from the basket. Time to start meisner or adlesh in his place. Hickman and smith played well, Petrasek hit his 3s and FTs but barely did anything under the basket. The rest simply didn't carry their weight, Coby and voss were especially bad.

An inexplicably poor performance that probably cost us a position in the tournament. Unless it was just jitters on the road, it's hard to understand why we couldn't rebound and hit anything under the basket.
Now we have to beat Penn at home and both Dartmouth and Brown away to end 7-7.

6-8 might be good enough for 4th.
I thought Smith had a nice game. Despite the points I don't think Luke had a good game - was beaten numerous times on D and even worse on the boards. Then again the whole team took a pounding on the boards.

Hopefully tonight's debacle will not cost us a position in the tournament, but it does make one wonder why our coaching staff doesn't keep our three best players on the floor for 35+ minutes, Princeton style, and stop making all those confusing player substitutions which slow us down, particularly in the early part of the first half. Those multiple substitutions make it more difficult for the starting five to meld into a cohesive unit. and improve from game to game After all, we are midway thru the Ivy League season so it is unclear what is accomplished by not using our three star players more. Finally, Hunter obviously doesn't belong on the outside on offense as he is a slasher and not a shooter. Slashers need to wreck havoc by using their athleticism near the basket, scoring, rebounding and passing from up close. Hunter is uncomfortable outside and regardless what offense you are using he needs to be moved inside where he can do the many things that slashers do to score points. Move Hunter inside and he will start producing on offense. If you are not going to use Hunter that way, then play someone else in his stead who is, in fact, comfortable outside such as Davis, Adlesh or Killingsworth. Let's defeat Princeton!

This was a classic trap game. Penn was winless and desperate. We weren't and didn't want it as badly. Coby is better off the bench than as a starter. Luke and Mike have to be on the court a minimum of 34 minutes. I also, think that Lukas should be playing more minutes. Hickman has fallen off from his OOC performances. He doesn't seem to get his shot or to drive. Hunter has no midrange or outside game and everybody knows it. This is where we are really missing Castlin.

I don't necessarily disagree watching Smith, but this is a couple of league losses where you all have said he was the only guy out there playing well, and while he got his points he shot under 35% while taking the most shots on the team. It could be that the low percentage comes from him having to do it all, but sometimes a team is less efficient precisely because one guy is trying to do it all.
Regardless, I don't think this is the awful loss everyone seems to think. Yes, 7-7 would virtually guarantee Columbia a playoff spot, but that's because Columbia is the only team with a reasonable path to get there. 6-8 likely does it too with Penn's bad start. This was a game where Columbia had a reasonable shot to win, but at best it was a 50/50 game.

Cornell nearly defeated Princeton last night giving hope to Columbia's chances this evening. Even if Columbia doesn't win this tonight, it will remain ahead of Cornell, Penn, Brown and Dartmouth for the fourth place spot in the tournament. If Dartmouth defeats Brown and Penn defeats Cornell, it seems that Columbia would have a two game lead over all four of those schools. If Cornell takes down Penn and/or Brown defeats Dartmouth, Columbia will have a one game lead over Cornell and/or Dartmouth. My predicts are Brown will defeat Dartmouth, Cornell will defeat Penn and Harvard will defeat Yale.

Funny -- I would go exactly the opposite on each of those games! Though Yale is the only one where I would call it anything but a toss up. I think a young Harvard team on the road will have trouble, particularly after having to really turn on the jets in the second half to beat a much weaker team.

Harvard goes 10 deep, with 2 Srs. and 8 Fr. and So. They have 5 guys, who have been starters in past years and are not part of the rotation. The dressed 20 last night.

Back to Columbia - any thoughts on whether Princeton is a good or bad match-up for us? I'm not sure. I think they will give Smith and Hickman fits, on the other hand Princeton has been playing with a mostly short lineup that some combination of Petresek/Meisner/Coby could potentially exploit.

Big and quick do present problems for Smith and Hickman, because they can't shoot over big guards, and they can't drive on quick forwards. Petrasek, Meisner, and Coby (if he rebounds from last night, where a cut on his face might have affected his performance) might make a modest dent in P's defense. But I still expect us to lose by at least 10.

Didn't mean to suggest that depth would be an issue for Harvard. I think experience is, playing against a better team on the road. I think they are more likely to blink tonight.

Mike Smith was outstanding in the second half tonight finishing with 21 points. He also had a team high six rebounds.
If Penn defeats Cornell tomorrow afternoon, the Lions will have a two game lead over Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and Penn. If Cornell takes down Penn, the Lions will have a one game lead over Cornell, a two game lead over Brown and Dartmouth and a three game lead over Penn. Do I have it right?

Technically Penn would win the tie with CU based on head-to-head. But a 4 way tie for 5th, all 2 games behind CU with 6 to play, sheesh.

But Mike James argues on Ivybball that it would be better for Cornell to defeat Penn, even though they'd then be just a game behind. His rationale is that if there is a tie, we have the tie breaker over Cornell (whose schedule is the same as ours), but not over Penn because (so far) we lost to them, and they have higher national rankings. I think I'd prefer a two game lead over everyone, but either way, I now think we'll squeak by into 4th place.

This Ivy Tournament thing isn't so bad in my view. These are all meaningful games for every team in the league right now. Usually we are all just talking about P and H and maybe Y at this point.
I am liking it.

I'm with you cc--I'll be rooting for Penn over Cornell because I would like the Lions to have a two game lead over Brown Cornell,, Dartmouth and Penn rather than the alternative of a one game lead over Cornell, a two game lead over Brown and Dartmouth, and a three game lead over Penn. While a loss to Cornell tomorrow afternoon, might eliminate Penn as a competitor of Columbia in the race for 4th place, it would also push Cornell into fifth place just one game behind us. Go Quakers!

Columbia fans should be rooting for Cornell today and it's not particularly close. If Penn wins today, then the pressure is ON that Penn-Columbia game in two weeks. Frankly, if Columbia loses that game, it would be in big trouble. If Cornell wins today, that game likely doesn't matter for the Quakers and Cornell still (likely) has to outplay you guys by two games down the stretch. Out of 5000 sims, Cornell finished with 7 or 8 wins in about 80 of them, which is less than 2%. They're not the team to be worried about.
Penn got to 7 in 3% of the sims and 6 (which with the tiebreaker is all they'd need) in just over 25%. You want the Quakers dead and gone, ASAP, trust me.

You're assuming that Penn getting to 6 includes a win at Columbia. They can get to 6 without that, but then they are dead meat, aren't they?

Penn gets to 6 wins (or more, surprisingly enough) given a loss to Columbia about 13% of the time. That being said, over 80% of those times, Columbia gets to 6 or more wins too and about 40% of the time they get to 7 or more. So, indeed, if Penn loses to Columbia, they can still get to 6 wins, but so will Columbia. Penn should be in okay shape with tiebreakers in that case, though.

Cornell would have to win one of at Yale or vs Princeton (and Columbia would have to lose those games) for the tiebreaker to flip.

Assuming Penn loses to Harvard and Yale, they now have to beat Columbia, Cornell, and Dartmouth away + Brown at home to get from 2-6 to 6-8. Before this weekend, we were focused on the last weekend of the season Columbia-Brown game. Now the season is more likely to turn on the Penn-Columbia game at Levien one week from Friday.
It's a straight but narrow path, and neither team can afford any mistakes.

They lost at Dartmouth and at home to Brown, so you have the locations reversed for those two teams.
But yes, this coming Friday night between Brown and Penn is a must win for Penn. Lose it and they will most likely not make the tourney since Brown would own 2 wins over Penn.
