Amazing what happens when Howard is playing at full strength. What a difference from this past week--we are a different team.

Goodman is really needed out there against this kind of team, particularly in the second half when they went full tilt on the pressure.

P38 and Chip Bayers said much the same thing. The margin should have been even greater. It's wonderful that we are winning this game, and many players have done well. But we didn't take full advantage for quite a while.
This
"From the Palestra, 42-14 at the half and it was more lopsided than the score, if that can be believed. "
is not that
"
Absolutely. It took a while for Penn to really stretch out the lead when it should have been over early. "
but hey, you do you.

Man, Gettings racked up some serious garbage time point production here.

So did Hatter although some nice style points along the way, too.

Hatter and Gettings had 28 of their combined 43 points in the final 11:03, after Penn had stretched the lead to 31.

No, because I'm not suggesting that 30 of those 49 points were obtained by fraud.

50 of 83 points from Freshmen. It looks increasingly like Betley with his 22 points, 8 boards, 2 steals and a block is the real thing. He has a very good wingspan and great instincts around the basket. He is now 17-44 from three, 39%, best on the team not including Brodeur at 6-13. Goodman has now played two decent games in a row. Brodeur with 6 turnovers is still having trouble with the double teams. 6 blocks though. Next game they will surpass last year's blocks total. Same probably for steals. one more win will surpass last year and also Harter and Dunphy's second year in a much tougher league.
The process is working.

Two big keys to this weekend. First is Matt Howard. We are so much better when he is active on both ends. Second is SD settled in a rotation of 8 guys and everybody got to play through mistakes. Betley and Goodman are better, max and AJ are figuring it out together. Max played great defense on Gettings today, his best effort on that end of the year. And AJ was a block machine.
But Howard and a set rotation was the difference.

Also helps when you get a bunch of easy hoops in transition.

At least one of Brodeur's turnovers was a team effort. He got doubled from behind and no one called it out to him. That is a communication issue that should be an easy fix. But there are also times he should try to do less with the ball and look to reset. That is just experience which he will learn.

I think Brodeur also had two off-the-ball offensive fouls called on him, which count as turnovers but obviously aren't errors in his passing or handle.

Excellent game, today, and fantastic weekend for the Quakers.
A great deal of credit goes to the coaches and players for rebounding from the 0-6 start to get back into contention for the 4th spot.
If Betley can continue with these performances, that would give Penn 4 strong starters. Goodman made a strong claim for replacing Donahue.
Having offensive and defensive success in these two up-tempo games seems to bode well for the huge game against Brown in Providence on Friday night. Hopefully, they get the Brown team that struggled in the first half against Columbia last Saturday, against Harvard in the 2nd half on Friday and against Dartmouth in the 2nd half last night.

Which is a direct product of Matt Howard's defense and a set rotation of 8 players.

Trying to think of another season where we had multiple guys playing a lot of minutes early in the season (MacDonald, Wood) but now ride the bench for the entire game.

How about an impressive block?
He's certainly looking like a complete player today. Halfway through the second half he's 4-7 from three, 2-2 from two, 3-4 from the line, 7 rebounds and only 1 turnover. An assist or two might be nice. But he really looks like he might be the real thing.
Or a pretty little floater in the lane.
This game has solidified my spot on the Betley bandwagon. When Howard leaves, he will be the most complete player on the team and likely a lock to get starter minutes even with all the new blood coming in next year. In addition to his overall length, he can get up there for rebounds.
This was also a breakout weekend for Goodman. The kid is fearless and now he is making much better decisions along with improved shooting.
Note SD stuck to his rotation and mixed up the defenses a bit again. Where was all this goodness during the losing streak?
