Seeing the threads about Bernardini and Schreiber made me think that we should break a topic into a new thread... the players who would have been the highest impact had other factors (injuries, academics, etc.) not come into play.

Like P38, I think Bernardini is one of those players. He had the broadest range of offensive skills I think we have seen at Penn for a long time ago. The fact that he is still earning a cup of tea playing also lends some credence.

Schreiber was another, but there I felt that it was both injuries and the coach who held him back.

My final nomination for the day is Mike Howlett, who I had big hopes for.

Gene Banks.

Would have been an all time great, but sold his soul to the devil instead. Anybody know whatever happened to him after he left West Philly? I heard a rumor that he died the instant he set foot on Duke’s campus.

Darren Smith---kid shot 22 for 46 from 3 as a freshman on the last Ivy winner, tore his knee badly the first game soph year as a starter and never was close to the same.

And I'll take heat for this I know, but

Justin Reilly..pretty highly recruited and showed some skills as a soph and then never was healthy ...one injury after another.

I was hoping we would save this one for, like, May, but now that it's on, you could put quite a few of the kids who suffered under the Miller "Walking Wounded" era on the list. In addition to Tyler, Howlett and Belcore, I'd add Justin Reilly.

Which brings up another point: Steve D's tenure has been remarkably injury-free; aside from Betley's hand, nothing significant this year (not counting Howard's illness.) I don't think this is just luck and his staff should be commended.

Best choice so far--he was more highly regarded than Pierce as a freshman.

Can I place Rob Hodgson on this list?

Ben Spiva.

Regarding Donahue's lack of injuries so far, I can't help but think that he probably deserves some credit for this. There are things a coaching staff can do to minimize injuries, and things staffs can do that put players at risk. Donahue's probably taking the smart course of action here (or, at least, I'd like to think so).

I saw Whitehurst put up about 50 points in the JSBL one summer. He was unbelievable. Hit from everywhere. I was just shaking my head about what might had been.

I'm pretty sure this is a story on the championship game for the season I saw Whitehurst play:
