You noted the Bruner & Downey combo excelling against the HU front court - Bruner in particular distinguished himself as the superior athlete amongst all those bigs. There was one rebound he snagged where he and Chris Lewis both left their feet at the same time to go after it, and when Bruner grabbed the ball at the apex of both their leaps, he had both elbows over Lewis's forehead by a good 6-8 inches. And that wasn't the only example of him outskying everyone nearby when he went after a board.

Hope your preview is right.

In the two games that the teams played this year, Bruner mostly seemed to play on the perimeter, with Reynolds and Downey being stymied inside. Against Harvard, Bruner was in the paint more and had an impact there as the game wore on.

This Yale team is not the defensive juggernaut we've seen in years past. The Tigers should be able to penetrate and to get some offensive rebounds. But it would help if the outside shooting recovered to its normal level. Weisz and Cook and Cannady are due to get dialed in.

Team Rankings website has the Tigers with a 73% chance to win and being the last slot for the 12th seed. Vegas has Tigers as 7 pt favorite which seems a little high. If Yale wins probably a 14 or 15 seed.

During the first two games, Princeton had more open vs. contested shots than Yale with the exception of the 2nd half at Jadwin when they were tied. I suspect that Tigers are just a bit quicker than Yale offensively and Yale is not at the same level as last year on defense.

It is unlikely but possible that Tigers will have carryover effect as to their shooting % from yesterday unless player(s) have lost confidence or they are tight. Mitch claims that it is a senior league historically and the theorem will be tested.

Look forward to reading your log after the game. Go Tigers!!

If the Tigers win, I'm resigned to the 13. To move up to a 12 some team would have to drop down or out. When Vermont won their AE tourney that pretty much sealed it.

Team Rankings has given Princeton about a 30pct chance for an at-large bid for the last couple of weeks. So I'd take whatever they publish with a grain of salt.

Great Tiger D leads to a bad, late in the clock jumper, and Cook gets the rebound. Stephens backs down a little guy (Yates) and scores. Downey ORs over Cannady and scores. Yale gets a stop, ball stolen from Dailier with Gladson's help. Tigers hold for last shot, Gladson misses a wide-open trey.

PU goes into the half up 31-29.

PU should be pretty happy to be up at halftime. They gave up 8 ORs to Yale, a trend that will have to stop going forward, and a three or four easy drives to the rim. Also, the TO battle is in favor of Yale (4-5), which you would expect Princeton to win based on the whole season, although Yale did a good job yesterday holding onto the ball vs. Harvard.

Three-point D has been OK, holding Yale 3-9 without too many more chances for the Eli to even get a look. Tigers are 4-12, which could be better but is probably good enough to win.

Downey gets ball low, it's knocked out of his hands, Dailier misses a three but gives up the OR again. Dailier hits the trey after the double-team on Downey. Miller is double-teamed, the ball is out-of-bounds to Princeton, then the Tigers get bailed out on a shot-clock violation by a super-late foul call of Oni hitting Stephens's arms as the buzzer sounds.

Refs check the clock, decide that the foul was before it hit zero, so Stephens goes to the line, hits two FTs. Up 33-32.

Fantastic Cook pass in transition to a cutting Stephens for a layup. Terrific help D by Miller leads to another runout, Weisz passes up a wide-open three to pass to Cook in the corner for a wide-open three, splash!

Yale, down six, gets another OR and follow by San Downey. Got to screen him out. Cannady responds with a trey, pushing the lead to 7.

Downey with a hook against the soft double-team. Stephens powers through the lane with a spin move for a layup, and the foul on Downey hitting him on the arm. Completes the three-point play.

Gladson sets a great screen, catches the ball outside and knocks down the trey! Copeland drives for a layup. Cook misses a trey long. Copeland with another circus drive and layup.

Tigers slow it down, miss shot at the end of the clock, Weisz with a great interception and streak for a layup after a pump fake against collapsing Yale defenders. Up 11 with 6:26 left.

Great defensive stand forces bad Yale shot against the clock out of a timeout. Cannady fumbles the ball, grabs it and puts up a quick trey, which misses. PU ends up retaining possession. Stephens cans the three.

Weisz commits his third foul and Phills hits two FTs. Up 63-51 with 5:17 left. Just a few more good possessions and the Tigers will be in the NCAAs.

Cook's lefty runner, underhand scoop moving parallel to the baseline with four on the shot clock puts Princeton up by 13, but another shooting foul gives back one FT.

Missed Bell trey late in clock, then Downey fouled at other end. 3:57 left.

Princeton going to its slowdown-with-a-lead offense and it really does work to shorten the game. But I like it better when those shots go in at the end of the possession.

So far Stephens is perfect from the field in the second half and the rebounding numbers have equalized. Weisz is not shooting great but playing a heck of a floor game.

Downey misses the front end of his one-and-one, PU goes with small lineup. Whoever Downey covers looks to drive, in this case Stephens, who gets to the line shooting two, making zero.

Oni wide-open for three but misses. He hasn't had many attempts against the Princeton D, which has cued on him. Weisz misses a drive, then Yale bleeds off too much clock before Cannady fouls (it would have been Weisz's fifth foul). Two FTs go down for Yale.

Up 11 with the ball under two minutes. Shot clock violation, 1:39 left to play.

Weisz commits a dumb foul on the perimeter and fouls out. Aaron Young comes in for more ball handling. Dailier hits two FTs, so lead is 9 with 1:31 left.

Could be interesting ending without Weisz on the floor. Must get it to Cannady early and often so they have to foul him.

And Princeton gets the ball in against Yale's pressure to Cannady, and he's fouled but PU still not in the bonus. Second throw-in sends a deflection out of bounds, officials poring over monitor to see who has possession. Should be PU from my view of the tape, refs agree.

Throw-in from the side, Bell hits Cannady and he's fouled by Oni, now goes to the line for the one-and-one. He's automatic again, lead back to 11 with 1:28 left.

Yale missed trey, Stephens rebound, ball to Cannady, he's fouled, hits two again.

Exactly one minute left and Cook fouls out. Up 13.

Bruner clanks his first FT, hits second. Yale no longer fouling, just chasing. Stephens with a layup, then a dumb foul with 31 seconds left.

71-59 victory. Streamers tossed a second too early, but then a great celebration on the court. Black and Orange flag waves over the Palestra.

11-26 from three. 14-26 from two. 15 assists, 8 turnovers. Yale held to 6-20 from three, 14-33 from two. FTs pretty even.

Yale did get 14 ORs on its 33 missed FGA, not so good for the Tigers, but they got the job done in the end.

My adrenalin levels are low enough to type now.

1. Myles Stephens is the man. Carried us again. His lateral foot speed is unbelievable. Seems like he should be on the football team also.

2. Cannady and to a lesser extent Cook finally made some three's; otherwise could have been Penn redux and overtime.

3. Gladson and Miller had I think 9 points and played excellent perimeter D, as pointed out be the TV analysts.

4. Weisz up and down, but made some big plays. At the next level in the tournament, he may become less of an asset.

5. I'm happy for the team; they worked hard and deserve a spot in the NCAA tournament.

6. The format for the tournament needs to be altered for next year, but we may get in as a 3 or 4 seed, and then who knows?

7. We have room on the squad for another player. I hope a big man was watching and was favorably impressed.

I watched Oregon-Arizona last night and Stephens looks and plays a lot like the first-line guys on those teams. One of his spin drives today was right through the arms and bumping bodies of multiple Yale defenders.

In both tourney games he also didn't get discouraged offensively when he got blocked occasionally, but also didn't make it personal and start forcing things. Sometimes it's hard to find good players who don't err one side or the other after getting stuffed.

If it was a League thing - not knowing who would win and using them for both games - I'd expect a rainbow of red, green, light blue, dark blue, crimson, brown, orange, and a medium blue or dark red for Penn.

Thanks again for the game by game blow.

Someone wrote on a prior post as to why can a team that goes undefeated have less than a 50-50 chance to win the IL Tournament. It certainly appeared tough for three of four halfs. Why == because it is simply difficult to win two games in two days against good competition with this format for a myriad of reasons. If the Tigers lost, we can only imagine some of the comments.

I hope that the IL reconsiders the existence of the tournament and/or format so that any team, Harvard-Yale-Penn etc, does not go through a similar drill with an undefeated record. I doubt that they will.

Congratulations to Mitch/coaching staff, seniors plus Stephens/Cannady/Bell for a memorable season. Weisz, Cook and Mitch deserve special praise for their leadership and surviving the Palestra.

Go Tigers! Let's hope that they confound WVU, Butler or someone else -- they might.
