Better option: Friday night semis on home courts of higher seed. Sunday final on neutral court (double header with women's final.

My suggestion was single site, Friday night doubleheader and Sunday final

I would prefer giving the higher seed the home court, and perhaps even for the finals. You would get good, if not sellout, attendance, even for the Women.

My suggestion is:
Friday night - #1 vs 4 women; #1 vs #4 men
Saturday afternoon - #2 vs #3 women; #2 vs 3 men
Sunday morning - Final women
Sunday afternoon - Final men

Hosted at the Palestra

I disagree. The entire purpose given for this is to get all the schools, alumni and students, together for an event. We frankly don't need a tournament, but if we're going to have one, this is the only explanation that holds any water.

Make it mud wrestling

#1 men vs #4 women--Upper Quad
#1 women vs #4 men--Lower Quad

Alternate version--

Same teams as above, playing basketball in the Palestra. Shirts vs skins. #1 seed in each case decides which is which.

The other teams actually have to play basketball against each other in the Palestra, M vs M and F vs F.

I had a lot of fun Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes that's enough. After all, this is about me, right? So, I'm fine keeping as it was this year.

Well, that's the first time I've heard that one. I've heard that the tournament was to promote the league, I've heard it was to keep the seasons alive for more teams, I've heard it was to give us the best chance to get a second team in the big dance.
But if the entire purpose is to get everyone together for an event, let's have a picnic or something, we definitely don't need a basketball tournament.

I'm with Old Bear and Tiger69. Let's make the 14 game tournament more meaningful by rewarding the higher seeds with a home game. I don't care whether it's 8 teams, 6 teams (with top two seeds getting a bye) or 4 teams, but let's go home court for the higher seed, until the championship game on an appropriate neutral court.

I'm not voting for any of the listed options.

N+1 format: Let the number of teams in the tourney equal the number of losses of the regular-season champion plus one.

Champion byes: The regular-season champion gets a first-round bye whenever there is an odd number of teams eligible.

Champion venue: The tournament is held on the home court of the regular-season champion.

This setup generates the most interest during the regular season in both the leader's games and the potential tourney entrants' games back in the pack (unlike this year you couldn't know for sure which games "didn't matter" at the end because the leader might drop another one). It also gives that nice "everybody rooting against the leader" dynamic where those who pull upsets become league-wide heroes for a day. It rewards and protects the regular-season champion for its grueling round-robin success, but it scales the level of protection to the degree of their success.

I'm fine with your N + 1 suggestion. Sounds like fun.

The problem with arguing for this option is that it seems like the tournament committee is very simple minded. Can not imagine them ever going for this. So it's like wasting your vote on the Green Party.

The other problems are the league sounded like they really wanted an arena large enough for a lot of fans and they also wanted the men's and women's (at least championship games) together.

But, all that aside, I like your idea way better than what we had this year.

Thanks, westphillywarrior. Since my vote doesn't count here anyway, I'd rather be an intelligent idealist than a compromiser with foolishness.

Perhaps the the ultimate purpose of the event is to help us all understand the true meaning of Christmas.

For those who missed this article, it makes it fairly clear that we are not going to any system that is home court, because they want to keep the men's and women's tournament together. The only question appears to be where to hold it next year.

I don't see anything in that article that would preclude having early round games on higher seeds home courts and then bringing the men and women together for their championship games on a neutral court.

I don't get it. I don't understand how any fan can't see that it's just flat out wrong to have the whole season come down to games where any team is given an unearned home court advantage. If they try to move the tournament to Jadwin or Payne Whitney next year I'd hope Penn would just say NO.

Don't look at me. I have consistently been opposed to a tournament. But if there's going to be one, I see no point in doing home courts---there's absolutely nothing to be said for that setup. This is about MARKETING. Read the articles about it in Bloomberg and elsewhere. You're not marketing the Ivy League by playing a solo game at Yale. So while I oppose a tournament on pure fairness terms, once you are ignoring fairness and having a tournament, there has to be an ulterior motive, and there is. Playing at home sites destroys that motive.

I think that we are pretty much agreed.

I still think, however, that the tournament should be for an NIT bid, or thepossibility of a 2nd NCAA bid if the tourney winner is so good, say hypP in two years, that it can't be ignored and has upset the regular season Champion.

Hard to argue with anything that promotes Vince Guaraldi.
