Paul Newman, a 6-9 center, has committed to the Bison. He is from Philly, having played for Roman Catholic HS before doing a PG year at St. Andrews in Rhode Island. Originally committed to Brown last year but decommitted last month. Also had an offer from Towson.

Here is a nice video. He looks much bigger than I expected given 137's comments about him being thin.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5WwVFnPsz0

Looks like he has some decent moves and can even shoot some from the outside. Passing looks pretty good also.

Also, he makes a really good creamy Cesar salad dressing!

A few notes on Newman:

1. He apparently had a growth spurt over the past year and a half. Was called 6-6 18 months ago, 6-7 during his final year at Roman Catholic, and 6-8 earlier this season. Now 6-9 according to Verbal Commits.

2. The current head coach at Roman Catholic is Matt Griffin, John's brother. He did not coach Newman, since he only took over this summer, but he may have had some involvement.

3. Although I am sure he will be a bit of a project, he did do well in a couple of late season showcases. Had 21 points against national powerhouse Northfield Mt. Hermon in the National Prep School Invitational, and had 23 points in the NEPSAC AA Showcase.

Having done a bit more research, I retract that "thin" comment and removed it from my original post. Verbal Commits lists him at 6-9 170 lbs - which is clearly very thin. But the Roman Catholic roster last year had him at 6-7 215 pounds, so that 170 lbs is clearly in error. It appears they never changed his weight from his sophomore year in HS.

Looking around some more, his size is all over the place in various articles. In this article about Roman Catholic's win in the PA AAAA state semis 13 months ago, he is called 6-9 240 pounds. They ended up winning the title and were ranked #1 in PA.

The above post is incorrect. He transferred to St. Andrews for his senior year - but it was not a post-grad situation. I like that better; younger normally means more upside.

Here is a brief scouting report from a Brown fan who attended the National Prep School Invitational at the end of January when Newman was still committed to Brown:

"I stopped up to Rhode Island College this afternoon to see Mt. Herman play St. Andrews in a Prep School tourney. Two Brown recruits tipped off the game with Matt DeWolf for MH and Paul Newman for SA. MH seemed poised to blow SA out of the gym early. But SA hung tough all game, got within 4 a few times in second half and lost by around 8. Coach Martin was in attendance to get a preview of two big men who will be banging in practice next season. It seems that Newman is actually 6-9, per his introductionas well as his looking eye-to-eye with De Wolf. He showed the ability to take the ball strong to his left and score inside. He was a bit out of control at times, as he is a work in progress. He had a strong second half and played well, which aided in SA keeping the game close. He hurt his shooting hand making a nice block late in the first half. But he showed some toughness by playing through it as SA only had 9 players dressed against one of the countries' best prep teams who dress 17. And he showed again that he has a nice touch from the line."

Here is the Bucknell press release: http://www.bucknellbison.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_O...

According to this, he is 6-9 240 lbs. When it comes to the size of bigger players, Bucknell has usually been accurate. Said Foulland was 6-9, Thomas 6-6, MacLeay 6-6, Oberfeld 6-9, Muscala 6-9, Willman 6-6 etc.

According to the press release, his year at St. Andrews was a post-grad year - meaning the Maxpreps roster for Roman Catholic the previous year was incorrect.

Looking forward to 2017-18, a deep and athletic team. Foulland 6'9", Thomas 6'7", Brown 5'11", MacKenzie 6'1", Toomer 6'3", Jones 6'5", Sestina 6'8", Moore 6'8", O'Reilly 6'3", Robertson 6'5", adding Jimmy Sotos 6'3", John Meeks 6'6", Paul Newman 6'9", I can see a lineup with size inside and then a smaller quicker team on the floor, lot's of mix and match, for Coach Davis. If you got to home games and watched the warmups, it is apparent Ben Robertson is a dunking machine, fun to watch, but in seeing some spring practice he is a deadly shooter, I think he will add to the rotation next season. We all know staying healthy is the key, to what we expect and what we might see.

Hope you're right on that. His biggest weakness in games this year was that he shot it very poorly from outside. Small sample size however. He also shot it poorly in the two practices I watched. With his athleticism, if he starts shooting it well from mid-range and beyond, he could be a useful player.

Well, looks like we checked the "we need a big man" box. Good. ND had a real opportunity to sell in terms of Nana's upperclassman status and the need for a successor.

Husky, I think that we have been lucky to have 2 bigs (Muscala and Foulland) who are basically ambidextrous. IMO, this is the exception not the norm.

Yes, very lucky. I don't think Newman will be another Muscala or Foulland, but he may be another Linthicum or Oberfeld - big guys who can rebound and defend. Blended in with other talented players, that could be enough. At this stage in the game, I thought they might not find a player at the level of Newman.

Wonder if he's done growing? Another inch or two would increase matchup problems for PL opponents.

BTW speaking of Nana, given his steady improvement, he could be really outstanding next year.

Husky, that is a fair question. If he has grown about 3" and put on around 60-70# in the last two years, he might not be done growing.

Bucknell has had great success developing bigs. Hopefully, Newman will follow in that tradition.

I might have found the answer to my question on the HC board:

"Brown already has 3 players over 6-8 on their roster and had another recruit in the same class, Matt DeWolfe, coming in which might have impacted his decision to flip to Bucknell."--somedaycamesuddenly

It is very unclear how much he has grown - possibly because newspapers and Internet sites sometimes don't update heights. During his 2015-16 season, some articles said he was 6-6 - but a couple called him 6-8. As for his weight, I am sure he hasn't weighed 170 lbs for a number of years. I think the 170 lbs was an error on one site that a couple others copied. An article in a Philly paper two years ago said he was 220. So who knows. But I have confidence that the 6-9 240 lbs is fairly accurate - especially since his official visit was only two weeks ago and they would have weighed/measured him then.

From the video posted above, there is no way he is 170 so that can be discarded. He absolutely looks at least 230 or more. He also looks like he has some nice skills although work is needed for even PL play. Quickness wouldn't hurt either. I know I'm being a little rough, but while he finished with many left handed layups, it would be nice to see some stronger finishes with power. But all in all, young Mr. Newman looks like he has a chance to be a decent contributor in the future.

I also saw the video and he looks no bigger than any other player out there. No "wow factor" either. Its clear Nathan Davis has the program going in the right direction so I'm sure I will be pleasantly surprised next year. Right now as it stands next year we should be a top 5 ranked mid-major, Patriot league champion favorite, and an 8 to 12 seed for the big dance.

If he really is 6'9 and 240 that would work in his favor as he seems to run the court well and made a few good passes and a couple of threes, skills that not all 6'9 guys have.

This Paul Newman is touted in some Bucknell circles as a potential sleeper superstar. Also, the woman have landed a 6'5" behemoth and there are discussions of implementing a zone defense around her.

Are you talking about 6-5 MK Moore, who was a freshman this year but rarely played due to a couple of injuries? At this stage, she is very much a project but definitely has the potential to be a defensive presence.

There is no-one taller than 6-1 among the incoming frosh.

Thats probably her, 137. MK Moore and Paul Newman are both projects with possibilities. MK Moore could be used in a novel zone defense which could potentially be a winning proposition. If Claire DeBoer can change roles after her success the first three years and not only propel her into player of the year and the team into the NCAA's, then how about MK Moore anchoring a zone? Paul Newman fits in well that he is both the essential player needed for success and his prospects for development in the first few years at Bucknell. Could he be as good as Muscala? No one knows at this point.
