While he was (a little) before my time at Penn, I have always heard good things about him from people who played for him at Penn. So R.I.P. Coach McCloskey

I didn't care for him precisely because of the Bad Boys. They weren't good for the NBA or basketball in general.

Then when the Bulls finally dispensed with that stuff, Detroit pulled extremely poor sportsmanship right before the conclusion of 1991 Game 4 ECF, with Isiah, Laimbeer (being heartily embraced by McCloskey) and most of the Bad Boys (Dumars and Salley being rare exceptions) walking off the floor maybe 10-15 seconds before the game was over, just so they wouldn't have to shake hands with the Bulls.

It was enough to get Isiah disinvited from the Olympic team, but frankly Chuck should have been penalized as well. And McCloskey enabled that gang from the beginning.

Oh come on---they played no differently than Pat Riley's teams. It was a different era where there was far more physical contact and the game involved a degree of intimidation. Detroit was not alone and they had a great team that deserves kudos for its success at the time.

Certainly, McCloskey's death is not the time to make the point, anyway, but I disagree with you. It is pretty much the same kind of point as my saying that Jordan got all the calls.

This was a pretty good 30 for 30. I used to root for these guys against the Bulls, but not the Lakers or Sixers.

I didn't like Riley and those Knicks, either, but this was different and extended far beyond playing the actual game. In the 4th quarter of that game, when it was clear the Pistons were going to get swept at home, the crowd started chanting "Go LA (who would be the Bulls first Finals victims)" and Isiah and crew on the bench loved whooping it up. When MJ was interviewed on the court right after the game by Ahmad, he was showered with boos by the Palace crowd.

All of that proceeded about 3 or 4 technical fouls being called on the Pistons, the most egregious one being Scottie Pippen getting clotheslined by Rodman right into Laimbeer, who violently slammed him into the crowd. The entire Bulls bench got up and was headed towards the Detroit bench before calmer heads prevailed.

Fast forward to the Bulls winning championship #1. The mobs coming out of the bars on Division Street were shouting one thing, and one thing only: De-troit Sucks. The enmity was real

Thankfully, that was the last time Detroit was ever heard from again during MJ's time. I think they went something like a decade or so before they next beat the Bulls in any game.

I'll let Ira Berkow do the rest of the talking:

I shook Jack's hand the night Penn beat Princeton for the Ivy title in 1966. He was the first in a very good string of Penn coaches. Jerry West spoke very highly of him in his recent autobiography.

Uh... Chuck Daly? Isn't he another coach with Philadelphia pedigree?
