I came across this link to an article the late, great Frank Deford wrote in 2003 on John McGraw, Christy Matthewson and the making of modern baseball.
Link
Several Bucknell and Lewisburg references contained therein...

The other night, Pablo Sandoval hit a homer, stole a base, and then pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The last time a pitcher homered, stole a base, and had a scoreless outing was Christy Matthewson in 1905.

Thanks for bringing this article back to the top. I finally got around to reading it. "Big Six" (Matthewson) was quite the star in the early 1900's. We forget how much this country has changed in the last 100 or so years. It is nice to be reminded now and then.

Agree on all the accolades. One slight quibble: it's "Mathewson".

Ha, ha, ha. I clicked on the link in 89's post above on my phone today and I thought, hey, this isn't a bad piece. Then I took a look at this thread again and realized it was something I posted two years ago.

At least you didn't open it up and say: "This article is terrible. What dummy posted it?"
