Rider's game notes:

return two starters, looks like a smaller guard oriented team, some size on the bench, but not much production last year from returning bigs.

so Kapp got the start, but both Mack and Hayes got more minutes. as noted they made a nice comeback from as much as 12 down i believe. dominated the fourth quarter.
very nice first games for Mack, Brugler and Kapp

Great, gutsy win! 49 points in the 2nd half, many of those from the FT line. Outscored Rider by 11 in the 4th. English played well in the 2nd half. Mack looked good with 12 pts, 5 reb. Brugler had 6 OReb and 8 total. Slagus had a quiet double double with 14/11. Very promising start to the season.

Yes, very promising start. Nice to see such good numbers from three newcomers - Mack, Kapp, and Brugler. Team shot very well, got to the FT line a lot, and outrebounded Rider 46-30. At the offensive end, BU got an extremly good 45% (13/29) of available offensive rebounds. But they almost threw the game away with 28 turnovers. Aaron Roussell can't be happy with that stat. About the only good thing that can be said in that category is that they only had one turnover in the 4th quarter until two fairly meaningless ones in the final 45 seconds.
The Bison actually trailed 52-39 with two minutes left in the 3rd. Then outscored Rider 11-4 to end the quarter, followed by 26-15 in the 4th. Total margin of 37-19 over the last 12 minutes.

I think they had 15 turnovers in the 1st Q. Clearly some first game jitters. Slagus and Walker were both in foul trouble, but when they got back in things turned around quickly.

The women did not play well today but beat a mediocre Akron team 63-52. Another 24 turnovers - which has to be driving Roussell crazy. Slagus 20 points and 15 rebounds - but also 7 turnovers. Walker and Romaine also had good games.

Kyi English may have had the worst game of her collegiate career. She made the 1st shot of the game then missed her next 11, including a few layups.

Unless a lot more offers turn up, I'm not going to start a women's recruiting thread. However I see the Bison just made an offer to a 6-2 PF from Northfield Mt. Hermon - Silke Milliman. Also has offers from Penn, Davidson, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and Northeastern - plus interest from several other Ivy's.
This is a big year for Coach Roussell as far as needing to land some players with size. They graduate Catherine Romaine this year - and both Kaitlyn Slagus and Maegan Mikkelsen next year. Those are their three main post players. He will have four scholarships to work with, and two of those four need to go to bigs.

The Bison have bounced back from three ugly losses to win two in a row at Youngstown St and at home today vs Canisius. They still had some scoring lapses today, but dominated the 1st & 4th quarters. Also, cut the turnovers down to 11. Hopefully, they can continue the momentum.

Yesterday was one of the better days the PL has ever had in OOC play:
Holy Cross 59 Bryant 57
Boston U 61 Boston College 57
Colgate 65 Towson 61
Bucknell 76 Canisius 57
Army 82 Yale 65
Navy 86 St Bonaventure 48
LaSalle 69 Lehigh 61
Before these wins, the PL was ranked 15th among conferences by Sagarin - despite the two preseason favorites - Army and Bucknell - having played badly.

On the bright side, the women got a solid win over a good Binghamton team. Bison held their two star players to 9-36 shooting. They let a 10 point lead slip to 2 late, but Kate Walker came through with a traditional 3 point play to seal it. Would not have been that close except for a crap load of missed layups.

Another positive note, Ally Johnson had a nice game going 3-4 from 3 in the 1st half. She spent much of the 2nd half running the point with both English and Hayes in foul trouble. I think this was only her 3rd game back. This freshman class + Mack are showing some great potential.

Freshman class has potential - but play and minutes have been erratic. Kapp started initially but is now getting very little playing time. Forward Autumn Ceppi was hurt at the start of the year and has only played a handful of minutes. Johnson - who was mostly recruited as a 3-pint specialist - had shot poorly before last night. Hopefully this game will get her rolling, as she hit almost 43% on threes during her HS career. And forward Tessa Brugler, who looked good the first couple of games, has missed the last five games due to illness (mono?). She has been on the bench for the games but can't play.

Forgot to mention that the schedule has been weak, ranked #304 in the nation. Winning close games is nice - but it doesn't establish the team as a PL contender. Right now they are ranked 211th nationally - 7th in the PL (Sagarin). Will need to make a lot of improvement over the next 4-6 weeks to challenge for a top spot. PL is much improved this year.

RealTime RPI has them at 189, 6th behind American, Boston, Army, Navy, and Lehigh. They're better than Lehigh, but it will be a battle among the other five.
The sample size is too small at this point to tell much. Our wins have been closer than they should be. The only bad loss is to St Bonaventure. The next five games are on the road and will tell a lot. They should beat Iona & Pitt. Fordham will be close. Then they start league play at American and Boston. Those will be tough games.

I am much less optimistic than you about beating Pitt or Fordham. I think they will be significant underdogs in both games, and will have to play a lot better than they have played to date if they want to win. Sagarin rankings as of today:
92 Navy = 74.74
106 Army = 72.67
157 Boston U. = 68.04
161 American = 67.61
178 Holy Cross = 65.42
210 Loyola Maryland = 61.75
211 Bucknell = 61.57
231 Colgate = 59.81
236 Lehigh = 59.56
275 Lafayette = 55.80
Others:
125 Fordham = 70.93
126 Pittsburgh = 70.93
261 Iona = 57.77
