There are basically three types of MTEs:
1) Eight team bracketed events not on ESPN
2) Eight team bracketed events on ESPN
3) Auto-semis events where mid-majors don't get a chance to advance even if they win, but instead play one or two of the big name schools and then two or three in a pod hosted by another mid
Type 1 MTEs are dying (Great Alaska Shootout) or languishing with low profile schools. Basically have to find a major TV partner or perish.
Type 2 MTEs are thriving. Schools are essentially signing deals with ESPN to do the rotation of their made-for-TV MTEs (since you can only do the same MTE tournament once every four years). I don't know if Princeton and Harvard have signed deals with ESPN, but they are certainly in the rotation now (having flipped their participation in 2015-16 and 2017-18).
Type 3 MTEs are also thriving due to the big names and big arenas ultimately involved. Ivies participate in these a lot, but I HATE the format. Get one, maybe two, shots at big name schools on their court and then usually two or three road/neutral games against usually blah mids.

Here is some info on the Gulf Coast Showcase from Penn Basketball.
http://www.pennathletics.com/news/men-s-basketball ...
Now in its fifth year, the Gulf Coast Showcase is an event geared toward mid-major programs. The NCAA-exempt event allows Penn to play 30 regular-season games this season instead of the 27 mandated by the Ivy League.
THE FIELD IN 2016-17
Florida Atlantic: 10-20 overall, 6-12 Conference USA (11th)
Georgia Southern: 18-15 overall, 11-7 Sun Belt (t-3rd)
Manhattan: 10-22 overall, 5-15 MAAC (10th)
Missouri State: 17-16 overall, 7-11 MVC (6th)
Northern Illinois: 15-17 overall, 7-11 Mid-American (4th West)
Penn: 13-15, 6-8 Ivy League (4th)
Towson: 20-13 overall, 11-7 CAA (3rd)
UMKC: 18-17 overall, 8-6 WAC (4th)

Thanks for pointing this out, RBG.
Based on this, it may be that SD just wants to get his young team more game experience regardless of the caliber of competition.
If you link on the URL, you'll see that prior to the tournament Penn will play ... drum roll... Penn State-Brandywine.
SRSLY? Who's the coach, Hoops Wyeth?

Wondering now if there will even be a Gulf Coast Showcase after the arena there has its roof torn off before being inundated with 10+ feet of storm surge - a distinct possibility under current Irma projections.

The games will be moved to a hastily-rebuilt tennis court.

That would not be a good thing since Germain Arena is being used as a shelter during Irma.

You can; they have; but the Palestra wasn't hastily built.

True. I understand that it took the Romans nearly 50 years with the use of three tribes of Indian slaves to haul in the necessary rocks to build the foundation of the Palestra as a fortress against invading Dutchmen from the north. I can still sense the smell of ancient battles whenever I enter its crumbling ruins.
