Happy to see the announcement. He was hired over four months ago, and I was getting worried when there was no announcement for so long. Was afraid the same visa problem would arise that cost him the Bucknell job a few years ago.
Congrats Bryson.

Congratulations, Bryson!
The Bucknell coaching tree grows and grows every year. It might be interesting to discuss who are the top 3 basketball coaches who have graduated from Bucknell. Any ideas?

Personally, I would list the following:
1. A coach who lead HC to the national championship.
2. A coach who lead a D-III school to the national championship and a D-I school to a couple of wins in the NCAA Tournament.

How about one who led Villanova to a national championship.

I agree with BRW, that is probably about it. Are there any that we missed?

None in the same category. Other Bucknell grads who coached D1 programs include Ted Woodward '86 (Maine for ten years), Bill Courtney '92 (Cornell for six years), and Tom Schneider '69 (Lehigh 2 years, Penn 4 years, Loyola 4 years). Also Malcolm Musser '18 coached the Bison for 13 season before and during WW2.

Following up on the above, Bison alums who have been D1 assistant coaches (other than the ones on the head coaches list) include:
Tommy Thompson
Al Leslie
Dan Bowen
Charles Lee
Abe Badmus
John Griffin
Bryson Johnson
Others?
And ones who have been on D1 staffs in other capacities:
Donald Brown
Dom Hoffman
Others?
Wouldn't be surprised to see Kevin Bettencourt added to the D1 list at some point. Thus far at Endicott College, his record is 66-24 (.733) - and 43-11 (.796) in-conference.

Apparently prior to the 1908-09 season BU was coached by "student coaches." Presumably, those coaches came from among the players themselves. Where would the "student coaches" of 1900-01 fit on the list in view of their accomplishment (though only recognized retroactively)?

Never knew that. National champs of 1900-01. If there had been a Big East then, we could have been in it. .
Starting with that 1900-01 season, here are the Bison team records with student coaches:
12-1
12-2
10-0
7-5
8-1
10-2
10-1
12-0
Then they got their first non-student coach and their W-L pct started sliding.

Don.t know about Mikan's grandfather, but there is a good chance that Christy Mathewson played for that Bison team. He attended BU from 1898-1901, and he definitely played basketball as well as football and baseball. He left school in the spring of 1901 to play for the Giants, winning 20 games as a 20-year old rookie, but he was in school for much of that basketball season.

You forgot Steve O'Brien '80 (backcourt mate of Pat Flannery) who had a brief stint as GA under Tom Davis at BC in '80-'81 on a staff that included Kevin Macke (Pacers), Bruce Pearl and Jack Powers (Boston legend). BC lost the following year to Phi Slamma Jamma in the E8
