Defense played well up until that drive. Don't like where this is headed.

Nice to see the Bison win.
BTW, did anybody see the UPenn vs. Lehigh score? UPenn won 65-47! HELLO, did the defensive players miss the bus?
New season, new team, new dream . . . |

Quite a dramatic win for the Bison tonight. Great game for family weekend.
Nice videos of the game-winning FG, as time expired:

That is not only Burdick's longest FG - by a wide margin - but also likely his straightest. He was slated to be the backup FG kicker until Alex Pechin's hamstring - which caused him to miss virtually the entire season last year - started bothering him on place kicks just before the season began. Due to his exceptional ability as a punter, that is now his only role, and he is one of the top FCS punters in the nation. Last night he averaged almost 49 yards a punt, with 4 of the 9 being fielded/downed inside the 10 yard line. Best Bison punter is history by a wide margin.

Best Bison punter is history by a wide margin.
Pechin's numbers speak for themselves but don't forget about a former outstanding punter in Phil Azarik, 2005-08, with pretty good numbers.
Punting -- Season Average:
Pechin 42.1 in 2015
Pechin 39.3 in 2016 (Injured with only 14 punts)
Azarik 41.1 in 2007
Azarik 40.5 in 2006
Azarik 40.5 in 2008

Azarik 40.5 in 2008
I watched Azarik on many occasions. Really good punter. But I think Pechin this year has taken his game to a new level. His average is about 46 yards per punt this year - BUT on many of punts he has been too close to the opposing goal line to hit it 100%. The Bison's lack of a reliable FG game and lack of a running game mean that on a number of occasions they choose to punt if they are anywhere outside of the 35 - sometimes even closer.
The other thing about Pechin is that I think he is the best Bison punter in at least 50 years in terms of distance control. When punting from the midfield area, he seems to invariably be able to land the ball inside the 10 yard line. He has 11 punts that were fielded/downed inside the 20 in the first four games. And only 4 touchbacks, several of which could have been downed.
Pechin made 1st team All-PL as a punter as a frosh and led the league. Azarik, fwiw, never made 1st or 2nd team - as good as he was - and never led the PL in punting. His four-year average was 40.14 - eighth in PL history - which included a freshman year average of 36.0 (omitted from the stats in the original post). I would be surprised if Pechin doesn't end up at 44+ - and no worse than second in PL history. One more stat: Azarik averaged about 15 punts per year inside the 20 his final three years. Pechin has done this 11 times in only four games this year. And he did it 17 times as a frosh (albeit with more attempts than Azarik had).
None of this is at all a knock on Azarik, who I think was a really good punter. Just giving reasons for thinking Pechin is the best Bison punter by a significant margin. After this year, btw, he still will have two more years of eligibility - which I understand he plans to use. That should allow him to really stretch out the records if he stays healthy. That is the biggest question mark. He also should be helped by no longer having to do triple duty (punts, FGs, and kickoffs), as he did his freshman year and the two games he played last year (one of which he punted with a bad leg). Azarik never really had that issue to affect his punting.

Factually -- Azarik was 2nd Team PL in 2008. Other punters in PL around those years included all-American Dato from Fordham and Lehigh's Leo who was .01 avg yard ahead of Azarik in 2008. Pechin's numbers speak for themselves - let's hope he and his punt protection/coverage teammates continue to be a strength for the Bison.

B137-- Can you dig into the BU history book under Punting and check out a player from the 80's named Pat Paro? I think Pat also produced some big numbers in terms of avg punt yards. Pat went to my HS and was an excellent all-around athlete, not just a punter.
Not sure that the "inside the 20" stats were even kept back then. (They were not kept when Bob Fetch and I were the ace Stat Team back in the mid 70's!!).
How does Pat Paro rank as a BU punter??

Our younger son is a senior this year, and we attended Family Weekend on campus. I was at the second half of the game vs. SH and would like to share a few observations:
Our offense (with a new OC this year I think) is very vanilla despite the point total. We went ahead by 2 TD's in the 4th quarter, and then went into a safe shell. I'd like to see more play-action passes and some misdirection type plays. We will not overpower anybody this year.
Our defense, like usual, was very good for the most part. SH did not much at all on the ground. Our DB's are playing tighter to the line of scrimmage this year-- more "press" coverage than what seemed like constant zone coverage in the past. LB's flew all over the field making tackles.
Pass coverage fell apart on a couple of long plays, letting SH back into the game in the 4th quarter. We will face better QB's with stronger arms than the QB for SH but he picked us apart in the second half. Concerning for future games, incl Monmouth this weekend.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the SH coach called two (2!) time-outs in a row to ice Burdick before the game-winning FG. Somehow, I thought that Burdick looked confident before the kick as he was jumping up and down during the time-outs and not pacing around.
The kick would have been good from 49 yards and no further. Great end over end boot!
A key pass happened right before the winning kick as Matt Muh came in at QB and hit about a 10 yard pass to get us close enough for the Burdick boot!
Smart call there.
We could definitely use more speed at the WR position, and more size too. Our WR's did not seem to get much separation at all on our pass plays. Perhaps a WR will develop but right now it seems to be a committee approach....

How does Pat Paro rank as a BU punter??
Below are the Bison top ten punters, season and career, as of this week. No mention of Paro, who played in 1979-80 per the Media Guide.
HIGHEST AVERAGE, SEASON
45.7 Alex Pechin, 2017 (27-1233) Through four games
42.1 Alex Pechin, 2015 (64-2695)
41.1 Phil Azarik, 2007 (43-1766)
40.9 Rich Miller, 1996 (62-2536)
40.7 Bret Berg, 2016 (33-1343)
40.5 Phil Azarik, 2006 (57-2309)
40.5 Phil Azarik, 2008 (44-1784)
39.7 Rich Miller, 1994 (50-1986)
39.4 Ken Durr, 1981 (46-1813)
39.0 Mike Morrow, 1984 (53-2065)
38.3 Jim Stewart, 1955 (13-504)
HIGHEST AVERAGE, CAREER
42.6 Alex Pechin, 2015-pres. (105-4478)
40.7 Bret Berg, 2016 (33-1343)
40.1 Phil Azarik, 2005-08 (163-6543)
38.2 Ken Durr, 1979-81 (143-5458)
37.9 Rich Miller, 1993-96 (207)
37.4 Brian Kramer, 1997-99 (159)
37.2 Mike Morrow, 1983-86 (196)
36.9 Kyle Sullivan, 2011-13 (66-2438)
36.8 Ryan Gutowski, 2009-12 (219)
36.7 Joe Mason, 1950-51 (79)
Ironically Bret Berg, who eventually replaced Pechin after he tore a hamstring last year is second on the career list. Berg, a very good safety, was a rugby punter whose punts rarely went over 30 yards in the air. The opposing teams never did figure out where to position their returners. Most punts bounced well in front of them, and always on the kicker's right side of the field - usually resulting in 10-20 yards of roll and no return.

Good analysis.
1. Agree on the offense being very vanilla. I thought that might change, having a new OC with a reputation for a wide-open offense. One issue, I think, is that he has five new guys on the OL - many who were lightly recruited - and they have generally been overmatched. Almost no time to throw deep and very few holes for the RB's. There have been virtually no long throws this year. If nothing else, I would like to see a few quick out-and-up type of throws to loosen up the defense a bit.
2. As for WR's, Butler has good speed - but he really hasn't had the type of plays to utilize it. One good young WR is soph Justin Bethea, who started the final game last year. He is tall and has good hands, but missed the first three games this year with a concussion.
3. One thing that no doubt affected the passing game this week is the absence of two very good TE's: Andrew Podbielski and Andrew Owers. Both are regulars, with Owers nominally lining up at FB, and are among the team's better offensive players. Freshman Alex Twiford, who is also a TE/FB, looks like he will quickly see regular playing time.
4. One thing I think has hurt the defense is an injury to starting DT Alex Jordan, who has yet to play this year For some reason, they seem to have found it harder to recruit interior DL the last few years than other positions. Recruiting has been great at LB and safety, and generally good at DE, since Susan arrived.

Bottom line: exciting game, featuring 2 not very good football teams, neither of which figures to do very much this year. (Although the way LU and FU are giving up points, who knows? CU seems to be crashing and burning as well). Think this is a 4 win team/ best case 6 which would be very good.
