Does anyone know who else we are recruiting for next year's class besides our two current commitments? Only a couple of names are showing up on the Verbal Commits website.

Verbal Commits website lists only two possibilities--Deondre Bourne and Jahbril Price-Noel. There must be some other players that we are pursuing. Maybe our coaching staff is recruiting some international players. Another possibility is that the coaching staff is waiting on the grades of possible recruits. Or the coaching staff could be looking for another under the radar star like Luke Petrasek. Finally, they could be looking at some possible transfers.

There seems to be much less information available for basketball recruiting at Columbia than there is for football, where the assistant coaches are tweeting all the time. Is that the Engles style?

I hope he just likes to recruit very quietly, because otherwise, we seem to be falling behind....

I think the silence makes it more likely we're sucking wind. Lets hope our talent over the next couple seasons puts us on the map a little more.

Just today I saw another story about Harvard shooting for a few five star recruits. Our first and second year football classes are rated among the very top of the league, and it should be more difficult to recruit 30 football players a year than a handful of basketball players here in NYC. So do we have the right pieces in place? Do we lack facilities on a par with our adversaries? Or is Engles more of an Xs and Os coach rather than a recruiter? If Faulds, who is the only four star first year in the IL, makes ROY, I will take all of that back.

Faulds may be ROY, but even if it isn't, he is not the problem. The problem is, rather, the paucity of higher level recruits for subsequent years. Admittedly, it is possible we are worrying too much, because if you look back at last year, several recruits (Tai Bibbs, for example) were just suddenly announced as Columbia commits. Such under the radar recruiting may simply be Engels' MO. On the other hand, if the silence means no one else is in the pipeline, then we do have a problem. Unfortunately, since silence does seem to be his preferred style, then there is no way for us to know.

The current freshmen have a lot of talent. And both of our signees for next year had a 1/2 dozen to a dozen offers and from good schools. One never knows until they get here but Ike Nweke while a tweener is a powerful and athletic player who will play the 4 for us and Maka Ellis can really score and has great feel for the game. While we only lose Castlin and Hickman we could stop here yet I would not be surprised if we bring someone on late.

Many coaches play it close to the vest. Only play on the court will matter but our recruiting results so far have been anything but disappointing in my view.

The 2018 class wasn’t very deep, sadly. There are high hopes for 2019, especially when it comes to bigs, but obviously we’ll have to see how the players develop over their junior years and U17 spring and summer (and test scores too).

My model has Columbia as the most productive 2017 class, and nothing I’ve heard thus far makes me believe that isn’t a smart bet (at the very least, they seem poised to put up a win share number that will take some doing to match). Aside from Harvard and Princeton, I don’t think any team is going to pull much out of the 2018 class, at least relative to what we’ve become accustomed to expecting from our frosh classes, and if all you get out of the 2018 class in terms of immediate production is Ellis, that might be all you need...

FWIW, Ivies do seem to be playing their cards closer to the vest now. It used to be that Ivies wanted the PR message out there on 3-star/4-star kids to normalize the idea that they could be competitive for that level of player. Now that hurdle has been cleared, and I guess it’s more advantageous now to NOT have that info out there. So, I wouldn’t worry too much if you’re not hearing much on your team’s recruiting efforts. That being said, I don’t think there’s a lot left for 2018 that would be high-odds instant impact...

I agree. So far, we have done quite well, and our competitive position will improve as the first years mature. That said, I still think we need one more player, preferably a three star, and probably looking ahead to Meisner's graduation in 2019, a PF.

By the way, there seems to be a lot of secrecy surrounding this year’s team. If there has been an open scrimmage/practice I haven’t heard about it. It will be interesting to see who starts for us against Villanova.

Great game to open the Lions' season. Villanova is the fifth ranked team in the country and is expected to compete for the national championship once again. Villanova has a terrific basketball team, coach and tradition. Columbia has played very well against several of the top teams in the country the last few years, and I'm hoping that trend continues.

Do we know who is going to start for us yet? And who is coming off the bench?

Actually, KenPom has Villanova first, beating us by 26 points, 88-62. I would consider anything much under 20 a moral victory.

It is just a guess, but in descending order of confidence, the starters are Smith at PG; Faulds (or Tape--this is pretty close) at center as; Meisner as PF, Castlin SF; and then probably Hickman, though Adlesh, Steffanini, and Bibbs will probably cycle through both guard positions pretty rapidly.

Engles' coaching style last year was to substitute freely and often so it may not matter which players are in the starting line-up. However, in terms of a possible "starting rotation," of ten or eleven players, I would second all of cc66's nominations while adding Brumant and Hanson. Incidentally, all of our bigs are likely to be tested early by Villanova's powerful front line. Finally, let's keep in mind that the best team we are likely to play all year is the first team on our schedule. That 's a big positive in my opinion,
