Well, the pregame writeup is up, and Engles is starting all upperclassmen: Smith, Hickman, Castlin, Meisner and Tape.

A bit surprising given what I've been hearing about the frosh class. I'd expect at least 3 frosh to see rotation minutes.

Meanwhile, Coach Megan Griffith and her Lady Lions just received a commitment from Sydney Brown, an outstanding player from Blair Academy. ESPN has Brown as a three-star recruit with a 90 rating. Griffith is an excellent coach and recruiter. Look for the Lady Lions to rise to the top of the Ivy League in the not so distant future!

I agree with Mr. James--"a bit surprising," but certainly not shocking inasmuch as it is the opening game of the season and it is Engles' style to substitute freely and often. It makes sense to me that Engles would start his veterans in the opening game of the season at Villanova; however, Faulds, Bibbs, Brumant, Henson and Stefanani will probably all see significant playing time against Villanova, and perhaps even early in the contest.

Adlesh will be a fairly early sub, being a good 3-pt shooter and floor general.

Practices differ by athletic department but the public "projected starters" aren't always in line with the coaches' actual plan.
Last year's game one preview listed five returning players as starters, but Smith and Killingsworth both started instead;

So don't take the game notes as gospel.

Let's hope tape has improved and gets some serious playing time. This year he could become a force to be reckoned with.

I mentioned the recent commitment of 3-star/90 rated Sydney Brown yesterday, as an indication of how well Coach Griffith's Lady Lions are recruiting this year. Here the other known commitments:
Mikayla Markham-- point guard,St Rose, Belmar, N.J (one of the best guards in New Jersey)
Sienna Durr--6'0" forward, Grinnell H.S., Grinnell, Iowa, (high-scoring athletic forward who is also a standout hurdler)
Hannah Pratt--6'1" forward, Boca Raton H.S. Boca Raton Florida (strong frontcourt player).
And certainly more to come........

This lineup is not unexpected. While most of the first years will get some playing time, players with seniority are hard to dislodge unless like last year, the difference is = Smith over C.J. Davis.
Amid tomorrow's anticipated loss, we should look for positive signs such as better defense (keeping Villanova below its projected 88 pts), Castlin's return to form, Tape and Smith's development, and of course, whether when they do play, the first years show the promise that everyone has talked about.

Another Columbia commit is Madison Hardy a 5'9" guard from Good Counsel in Maryland. She is ranked #20 in the DC/VA/Md area, bracketed by commits to Elon, Richmond and BC.

Thanks Columbia 37P6 and hoopsfan. I will put that info on the Women's Recruiting thread at the conference page.
I remember seeing Hannah Pratt's commitment this summer, since she was high school teammates with Harvard first-year Rachel Levy.
Coach Griffith does have things looking up for the program. This year, though, may be a tough one for the team. Last year, they were 10-3 in non-conference, then Josie Little had a season-ending injury and they went 3-11 in the conference.
The Lions get Little back, but they lost Oliver, Koerner and Surloff. Zimmerman is one of the nation's best scorers and she will certainly get her points. Hopefully, they will be able to get another good front court player and improved three point shooting this year. If the recruits are as good as noted in your posts, thing should only get better.

The lack of an appearance from Randall Brumant makes me think that Engles is going to put four guards on the floor for a lot of minutes each game this season.
This is consistent with the way Engles coached at NJIT, where he gave guards the overwhelming majority of the minutes...and ran.
We haven't really seen Columbia run the fast break very effectively yet during Engles tenure. I'm looking forward to seeing the team run more and more over this and the coming seasons.
