The next two games against Army and Colgate are our only realistic opportunities to go more than 1-6 on the road to open the season. We're now down to 189 in KP, in a league of our own, 46 slots below Penn at 143, and 47 slots above Dartmouth at 236. To break out of this no man's land in the middle of the pack, we have to beat either Army (171 32% chance) or Colgate (175, 34%), both of whom are favored by 5 points.

So far, we have run 11 pt, 2 pts, and 3pts above projections: the 11 was with Castlin in the line, the last two without. Since game notes haven't been published yet, we don't know whether Castlin will be playing. But unlike the first 3 games, this one should be close. Win it, and KP which recently boosted its projection for Columbia to 7-7 in IL, could begin to turn the 4 IL games where we are now projected to lose by just 1 point into probable victories.

We look terrible. We can’t play defense. And we can’t shoot. This is ugly.

Yes we do, though we do close to 49-44 at the half. Faulds started, no Tape at all in the first half, then we switch to a smaller quicker lineup, but still struggle to keep pace with Army. Castlin still out, Bibbs with a broken nose, but 8 pts. I have yet to see the improvement we all hoped for.

Smith has been awful. He is throwing up shot after crap and cannot buy a basket.

This has been one ugly game for us. Except for Meisner, nobody played well. I almost don’t know where to begin. Let’s start with the defense. It was nonexistent. Then the lack of any offensive coherence. There was none. Then the shooting. Terrible. Right now we are a bad team.

Pardon the spell check mistake at 8:37. Should have read shot after shot.

Yes we are. But it was very puzzling game. Why didn't Tape play at all? Faulds started in his stead, but was Tape punished or just not right for this lineup? Bibbs did have 12 pts, and Meisner had a good game, while Smith seems to get more frenetic and ever less effective--4 for 17, including 1-7 from 3.

Obviously, we miss Castlin, but unless we turn a corner, it is going to be a long, disappointing season.

Tape was in uniform but never got on the floor. Killingsworth never even got his sweats off. Among the first years, there were a few glimmers from Faulds and Bibbs, but not much from Stefanini, who lost the ball a few times, or Hanson. We will know more when we see the team at home, but I just didn’t see much useful energy on the floor or much enthusiasm on the bench. Something is clearly missing right now. And despite all we have heard about playing hard on defense, we didn’t.

Hate to say this Chet, but what is obviously "missing right now" is a coherent coaching plan for the improvement of the players and achieving a winning season. I have no idea what the coaching staff is doing and it would seem neither do the Columbia players. As a loyal Columbia sports fan I am willing to cut our coaching staff plenty of slack, but coaching by combination is a difficult feat to accomplish. We saw this problem early last year and it only got worse during the downward spiral in the second half of the Ivy League season. Our coaching staff needs to pick a starting rotation and stick with it so the players can develop some chemistry.

Our off the ball movement was very poor, everyone stood around while one guy dribbled around. It showed in our low fg%. We did much better on turnovers this game and one bright spot was forcing army into so many TOs. Our interior D was poor, our defensive organization was poor. Army was just out thinking us and finding open men to easy baskets, over and over. Part of this falls on the players for lapsing focus, but most of it falls on bad coaching this game.

In terms of individuals we would have benefited from some Tape and Killingsworth minutes. Hope they are doing ok. Castlin is sorely missed. Meisner played well and was a strong rebounding presence. Smith was taking too many shots and not draining enough as usual. Bibbs looked good and already improved in a few games. Faulds had good contributions to the offensive stats but was very conservative and hesitant on defense. Stefanini was flustered by D1 competition. Both of these performances are perfectly understandable for first years. It just means they have to keep working on getting better and more confident. It's clear they are not immediate stars like some had hoped, also goes to show why preseason hype on recruits is a complete waste of time, very hard to know who will perform and how they will develop. We have a lot of work to do, this game made me feel like the ivy top 4 is still a long shot for us.

When you have a shoot first PG then everybody else starts standing around. The problem is compounded when the shoot first PG’s shots aren’t falling. That gets back to coaching. And when your shots aren’t falling at least play good defense and don’t concede the Open threes. That also gets back to coaching. Right now we are looking at a very long season. I see no chemistry, either on the floor or the bench.

I was at the game. Tape warmed up, but didn't play probably because he has an injured finger (finger heavily bandaged in splint tied to a wrist bandage).

The coaches and players just have to figure how to best work together to use their collective talents.
That's on the Pr forum page.

With several very promising FYs, it will take Columbia coaches and players time to do the same. The team's evaluation should be at the end of December.
