Avi Toomer's injury limits flexibility, especially on the defensive side. Jimmy Sotos is needed for more well deserved minutes because of Kimbal's injury (as well as Avi's). Matt O'Reilly is also seeing more time. Kudos to Kimbal for being able to play through his.

Luckily they have an 11 day break for finals with no games. Hopefully, Kimbal will be healthier coming out of the break. They have three tough games before starting PL play.

One more thing, we moved from Pomeroy #81 to #73 as a result of today’s action.
Yep. For all the concern expressed about who didn't play well and what didn't go right, this was another game that I think has to be considered a good win. No, we can't rely on Zach to do what he did yesterday every game but the good news is we won't have to. It's a long season, every game is different, other guys will show up.

Totally agree Res. This was a good win vs a good team on the road, and while after the first few minutes we were in command all the way, the game was not easy. SBU kept coming back every time we threatened to pull away. OTOH, we always had an answer when they closed to 5 or 6.
As an aside, like the Bison, SBU has done a good job creating a fun atmosphere within the arena during games.

Zach will have a few more games like he just did before the season is out. Nana is going to show up big come patriot league play, and Kimbal and Avi will be back also, so we could run the tables come league play.
Nana doesn't seem as comfortable positionally as he was last year. He's using too much energy thinking about where he needs to be in the scheme and less just gripping it and shooting. Has something changed from last year that he is learning? Let him just do his thing like last year it seemed to really work.

Nana is fest when he gets the ball and goes right up with it. Too often he puts the ball down, or tries to deke as opposed to going aggressively for the basket. He can play on my team anytime though.

Thought Nate did a fantastic defensive job on #12 after Nana sat with two and was key to us getting the 1st half advantage (along with ZT's 5 3 pt plays obviously). Even Nana had a hard time with his physicality. 137 - my confusion on the defensive end was/is I can't tell what "keys" how we defend the ball screen and how we defend screens off the ball. Seems to be a hodgepodge that sometimes results in confusion and being out of position. Also, we do seem to actively concentrate on weak side defense...not really true of Paulsen's tenure where everybody was taught "stay at home". We're often also late on building a baseline wall that allows the ball to come out too quickly to the perimeter, where rotations are by then well behind. That team (SB) was up double digits at Ball and #1 was a jet. They have also been good performers on their home floor in recent years. All things considered was great to get a result. Some really poor mental errors by Seniors down the stretch. Stephen trying to split defenders for no reason instead of understanding score/clock. Nana picking up a fourth foul and putting a guy on the line late when he inexplicably chased #1 out to the deep corner. Really poor entry pass to Nana by Bruce from the corner. Not always going to get bailed out by 58% FT shooting. If both clubs shot EXACTLY 75% from the line we lose by 1. Easy to always pick out the bad stuff and in this case easy to pick out the good stuff...38 from Zach/23-24/Sotos 3-3 from 3. Dribble drive penetration still an issue. Don't know how it gets better when opponents are that quick. Great win. .500 seemed like a dream a week ago. SJU won't be an any easier for sure. Someone mentioned lack of defensive flexibility with Avi hurt. Does put a lot of pressure on when match-ups aren't optimal but potential solutions appear less appealing. I absolutely love the game (not as much as women), but I wouldn't want to be a coach.

I watched the game on demand last night without knowing the score. So, it was basically like watching it live.
Zack is amazing. The most prolific scorer that I have seen in the Orange & Blue. He can score from anywhere on the court.
Free Throw shooting was VERY impressive. Whatever the coaches/players did to improve, it is working.
Does anybody know if the coaches are trying something different on defense? It seems that the Bison cannot stop anybody, and defensive rebounding is very much a work in progress.
New season, new team, new dream . . . |

Defensive approach is very similar to last year - although the absence of Avi Toomer, who is a very good defender, has hurt them. Last year the overall numbers on defense were a bit better, but not against the better teams. Here are the points allowed and the number of possessions against top 200 teams last year:
Rank Team Pts Poss.
36 Wake Forest 94 66
25 Butler 86 68
33 Vandy 72 65
92 Richmond 68 80
140 LaSalle 83 70
170 Siena 71 66
58 Princeton 72 66
115 Lehigh 82 69
115 Lehigh 79 73
115 Lehigh 65 70
7 West Virginia 86 76
Points Allowed Per Possession = 1.12
Points Allowed PP (excl. Lehigh) = 1.13
This year's points allowed per possession = 1.14. Not much of a difference.

yes, still lots to improve upon, but some of you guys are really tough critics. things i like beyond the totally obvious:
Mackenzie: despite obvious shooting woes, he is not letting that affect rest of his game, playing defense, taking charges, etc.
Sestina: has seemed much more confident and aggressive from the UNC game on. we've been wanting more from him, he's giving us an increased presence on the boards and while he was only 3 of 10 shooting against Stony Brook, they were all good looks, and only one shot was badly off. i want him to keep taking all of those shots, he'll finish more than 30% long term. only comment would be while his finished finger roll was pretty, if he could get a foot closer he could be finishing those drives with a flush, no one could stop him.
Moore: also helping us get on the boards more. looking for his offense, but not forcing it too much. he'll keep getting better and better with game experience. we are getting what we asked for, and i for one am happy about it. consistency takes time.
