Towns and Johnson with food poisoning. Still no Egi, McCarthy and Perez.

Game tight in second half after Harvard jumped out to 14 point lead.

Farley, Welsh, and Juzang seeing minutes.

A shorthanded Crimson squad holds on to beat a shorthanded St. Joes squad in the consolation round.

Nice game for Baker (14pts, 11rbs, 3 blocks). Lewis and Aiken each score 21, Lewis adding 9 rebounds and Aiken contributing 8 assists. Great to see the team feeding him down low in this tournament.

Silver lining to playing shorthanded is that guys like Farley, Haskett and Welsh saw court time down the stretch.

Best wishes to Seth and Corey for a quick recovery.

Rough to see that St. Mary's was upset by Washington State earlier today.

Really wish Fullerton has pulled off the upset against Georgia. Would much rather see Harvard get Georgia than Fullerton on the road - could have been another Column 2 game win opportunity.

By the way, Harvard shot 7-25 from three - 28%.
That's above the season avg of 27.4%!

Crazy how consistently bad - but consistent nonetheless - the Crimson have been from long range. Is this the new normal?

Was at (most of) both games and enjoyed meeting 84grad and Mrs. 84grad. Fun to watch a game with them and iabhoops88. They teach me...

The Harvard team that defeated St. Johns, though missing 2 starters, showed of the same discipline they displayed in the 2nd half against St. Mary's. Active/aggressive on defense, and more controlled and disciplined on offense.

Chris Lewis, when he has some periodic defensive support, and teammates shooting passably from mid-to-long range, is a masterful post player. Robert Baker shows flashes of brilliance on both sides of the court, which, when they become more consistent as they did for some time today, will pay off in the coming 2 1/2 seasons (I hope) for Harvard.

Fun to see and talk with Yatta and Agunwa, who were in the stands today, supporting their (ex)teammates.

Nice win with a makeshift rotation. St Joseph’s seemed out of sorts all game, but I’m not sure that was because of anything we did. Liked the way the team responded when lead was cut to one.

Two days in a row of a concerted effort to feed Lewis. He was getting much better position down low and really shows good footwork and finishing ability with both hands. The inside game has to be a big part of the team’s offense. Feed the beast.

Nothing overly special about Rio’s stat line, but he looked good out there. His athleticism will be very helpful in relieving the pressure on Bryce.

11 turnovers after 8 in opening game. Just 3 by /Bryce/Rio. I’ll sign for that any day.

Surprised by Farley’s 22 minutes of action. 5 rebounds, a couple of which were solid hustle plays. Unlikely to see double digit minutes in many games, but glad he took advantage of this opportunity. Still expect Djuricic to see more action as we proceed, but nice to get a win with the 3 freshman playing 62 minutes.

LOTS of bad fouls. Too much reaching. Had a flashback to the Princeton game with Bassey’s fifth foul. Glad we had a bigger cushion yesterday. As Mike has noted, the focus on defending the line is key, and for the most part I think we’re in good shape there. If the other aspects of the defense improve, I think they’ll be alright on that end.

Depending on the opposing lineup, Lewis and Baker together works for me. When Aiken, Towns and Haskett are on the court with them, we’re pretty athletic and can handle a smaller opposing lineup.

Pretty clear that everyone will be zeroing in on Bryce on every possession, like Princeton did last year The Lewis inside game and Towns’ athleticism should be able to make a lot of teams pay for that, not to mention even an average shooting performance by Corey.

We have a huge asset in. Bryce’s FT shooting. Keep looking at the score board to see how many fouls the other team has. When they are over the limit, it makes Bryce’s penetration that much more dangerous. And when we have a lead late in the game, it makes it very tough for anyone to comeback. Not quite Notrre Dame ‘16-‘17, but we’re in good shape here.

All in all, we have a nice 7 man rotation, with the most likely add ons being Djuricic, Egi and McCarthy. Welsh, combined with Egi/Baker, can also help provide some relief for Lewis (especially if fouls are an issue). And I’ll say it again, Perez!

A win against the hosts would send the team back east in a good frame of mind. Road games at Northeastern and Fordham (another A-10 team!) sandwiched around the trip to Rupp. Then two weeks off before BU and GWU (another road trip for me). This team will be much better prepared for the 14 game tournament than they were last year.

Hope we have hired a food taster for the off day.

Harvard's starting to find itself, and we're starting to see what it looks like when Harvard doesn't get horribly outshot from 3.

The fact that Harvard has done ANYTHING positive this year while getting only 1.07 ppp on possessions with a 3-point shot is a testament to how good this team is in other areas. They were about +0.2 ppp on possessions with a three versus their opponents last year (which makes sense, because Harvard has a bunch of good shooters), and this year, so far, they've been exactly -0.2ppp. That's going to regress - maybe not to the wedge that Harvard had last year, but it should at least be a bit better than even, given the Crimson's shooters. Given that we see threes on about 20 possessions per game, that's probably 4-5 points per game on average.

With turnovers down big time after a rough start, the team looks really, really good right now. A team like Kentucky - that doesn't mind letting opposing teams play the 3PT lottery in a big way - is one that Harvard can get if it finds the 3PTers it's been missing all season long on one big night. Harvard has been impressive on the defensive glass and that's where Kentucky KILLS opponents, so it would need to stay big there as well.

Tight game vs Cal St Fullerton.

So, food poisoning has become a stomach virus as Dujuricic is out sick. Towns looks to be weak tonight and there is a Weisner Perez sighting as he's playing in Dujuricic's place.

Lewis with 3 fouls is the concern tonight.

Strange game.

No Towns (OK - a few minutes off the bench in first half, clearly still ill)
No Djuricic
No Welsh
Lewis in foul trouble early
Down the stretch, Aiken and Lewis on the bench in favor of Farley and Perez.
Still no Egi or McCarthy.
Aiken misses 3FT's and 4 three's in a row. Trying to do too much in 2nd half against a strong defender.

Rio Haskett had a good game. Drove the lane well and handled the point extensively.

FWIW, Harvard's best 3 point shooting this year - 36.4% (8-22). Opposing forward Jackson Rowe was the difference. Made all 10 shots (5-5 from three) - 25 points on 10 shots (no FT's). Remarkable. CS Fullerton shoots 30 FT's - Harvard only 11.

Northeastern Thursday.
Kentucky Saturday.

Yes to all above. I was there, as were iabhoops88 and 84grad.

With the illness that spread through the team, there were a number of makeshift lineups the guys weren't used to playing, and it showed. A couple of times, the lineup had only one "scorer" and/or no true post man.

It was good to see Perez have some minutes tonight, and he did "Travis" his way with bigger opponents periodically. Reed Farley showed a nice shooting touch. Chris Lewis is on his way to becoming a true force. Robert Baker continues to improve. Bryce Aiken is a talented player, and I just wish he'd pass more and force the ball less. Rio Haskett showed some fine skills, and a bit of wildness (freshman play). It's hard to comment on Bassey and Towns, because they weren't well for some of their playing time. Corey is starting to hit his shots.

Fortunately, these illnesses are temporary. Not injuries like Yale has experienced.

PS: Though the game will show on the schedule as a "neutral" location, this was a Cal St. Fullerton home game, to the extent that the Titans were playing in their home gym, and had some crowd there.

Yes, I'm not sure what to make of last night. It was an awkward line up at best, so I'll just write it off to that and evaluate at the end of December once we've got more to work with?
