Great team win, and a great game for Antonio. Happy to leave any debate about him for another day. This is a good day for focusing on what both Woods and Jones bring to the table. I suspect the road will have some rougher patches as the year goes on, but it is nice to see the team playing in a way where the strengths of the players are on display rather than the limitations. They really look like a team out there. Nice to see them win in some different ways, with different guys stepping up (including, as you point out, Antonio today and in the quadruple overtime game).

But in this game, and against LaSalle and Monmouth--teams with athleticism, Woods is our best player.
I will cherry pick three teams and declare them athletic, while ignoring all others!
Woods three worst game ORtgs so far this season are against Villanova, Towson, and UMKC. Please fit these games into the “athleticism†+ “best player†narrative.

Villanova was too good for everyone--the other 2 were 2nd and 3rd games of back to back to backs.
But LaSalle is a very good team with very athletic players. The guys out there last year could not have stood out there with them. Dayton is a young, inexperienced team with very athletic players. The guys out there last year would have lost that game. Monmouth? Clearly would have lost that game last year.
Antonio has added another dimension to this team and we really have not missed Matt Howard...agree or not?

Let's see. What was I think when I typed that word? Hmmm. I guess the irony would be on those who favor the 4 game tournament, who would be happy that a 4th place Penn has a chance to advance. I am on the record as opposing it, while also enjoying the possibilities that the tournament brings. It would be personally crushing if a 14-0 Penn did not advance. Somewhere in there there has to be irony.

I had rain on my wedding day. And it was supposed to be an outdoor wedding.
What impresses me more about Woods' play is that the game is slowing down for him. He was constantly a step ahead of Dayton on both sides of the court and it wasn't just because he was more athletic than they were.
Our whole team was matching up well athletically against Dayton. Other than Cunningham, we were able to out-muscle them.

I don't agree that we were more athletic--we were far more disciplined. It was the crisp passing that kept getting us open shots. But when they made athletic moves inside, we really couldn't stop them.
Either way, great victory for us on the road, with our play far better than a similar game last year at UCF---that was more that our opponent played horribly without their best player. We were the better team yesterday and if we can play like this in the Ivies, we'll be really tough to beat.

While I agree about the discipline being key, Woods, Brodeur and Betley gave Dayton problems athletically.
It seemed like Cunningham's points were almost all when Brodeur was on the bench.

Agreed that they didn't seem to be more athletic than us. I'm also not sure that yesterday fits the "best player against athletic teams" narrative. Dayton, like Lasalle this year, appeared well aware of the scouting reports, so they were not content to just matchup with us athletically. I think they were focused on stopping AJ and Betley, and knew they had to mark Caleb as well. Defensively, they basically were daring Woods, Foreman, and Jones to beat them. It wasn't a coincidence that the first two possessions were Foreman and Woods 3s. That wasn't athleticism. That was taking what the defense gives us (and, looking at it more negatively, taking the shots Dayton wanted us to take).
So I don't think it was so much that they couldn't handle Woods athletically, as it was that they couldn't handle everyone. Dayton made their choices and at least for a game they lost on those choices.

If we limited the game to our original 15 point lead, I would agree with you. But they made that 16-0 run and it was a different game after that. The guy who ended up beating them was Sam Jones, but it was forcing them to play us in man coverage after busting the zone and moving the ball better than I have seen Penn move it in years (without turnovers) that made the difference. And that means having guards who cannot be pressured man to man. That is the biggest difference this year, in my opinion. Our guards aren't being forced backwards and giving up TOs.

It helps when we shoot 13-22 from 3in an opponents gym where it is very hard to win. Antonio was also helped by playing in front his home family and friends in an arena he has had many great performances in before (in HS)
I think our guys played great and this is a great win but if we shoot our season average from 3 this is a different thread.
We didn’t and in large part because Sam Jones was never on their radar so we’ll take it.

True about pushing the guards, though with the caveat that during their 14 point run to tie the score, they did force the guards backwards. We were able to adjust back. Having A second ball handler with strength is part of that.
