Columbia plays Boston College tonight at 7:00 pm on ESPN. Boston College just defeated Duke by five points. KenPom has BC ranked at #84. Duke has dropped in the rankings from #1 to #5 with Villanova back on top. If the 1 and 9 Lions win tonight, all will be forgiven. Go Lions!

Meisner follows Castlin to the bench with an injury, but minus our starting forwards, we start with a nice lead and then go to the half down 43-35.

In such a damaged state, the game says very little about who we are or what we might become....

Final: BC by about 15; too many Lion scoring droughts. Smith was outstanding.

Lions fall to Boston College 81-66 as Mike Smith is sensational once again, but even a super player like him can't do it all by himself. Thanks to Smith , Columbia has sprinted out repeatedly to big leads in many games including this one. However, college basketball is like a relay race, and, if for whatever reason, the runners you are passing the baton to can't keep up the pace, your team is going to lose the race. That seems to be what is happening here. Obviously, the coaching staff needs to devise a way to improve the team's performance after Smith hands over the baton.

Any update on Meisner? If we have a healthy Meisner and Castlin, along with Smith, I would like to see Faulds and Bibbs or Hansen in the starting lineup.

What was encouraging is that we actually played pretty decent D for the entire game. BC is considerably more skilled, which was determinative, but given that we were missing both Castlin and Meisner, we didn't play badly.

Only thirty days away from the start of the Ivy League season against Princeton and Penn on January 12 and January 13. Feels strange to open against the P's rather than Cornell. It seems as if Engles is committed to a veteran starting line-up for the beginning of the Ivy League season. That line-up is Smith, Adlesh, Hickman, Meisner and Tape, with perhaps Castlin, stepping in for Adlesh or Hickman, if Castlin is healthy. Hunter and Barba will probably be the key veteran reserves. However, while having a veteran starting line-up has its advantages, a 1-10 record and lack of production from some of the vets, suggests that Engles may change his mind and start Faulds and Bibbs or Hanson in place of Tape and Hickman.

Hickman had zero rebounds in 26 minutes, our generously 5'11" guard had 6 in 40 minutes. it's clear the starters and most minutes should be:

1) Smith
2) Castlin
3) Meisner
4) Faulds
5) Adlesh/Stefanini/Bibbs

Hickman should play less than 8 minutes a game if any, with or without castlin, we might be a better team with hickman playing zero. Tape has regressed and can't seem to defend without fouling. Hunter is a good sub, but not good to start or finish a game from his poor scoring. Engles seems to be a great recruiter and a disappointing coach, I really really hope to change my mind on the latter but so many excruciating strategies, mistakes and oversights does not give me confidence.

Without Castlin we're looking at a 4-10 record.

I completely agree. This coach continues to baffle me with his inscrutable personnel choices. Hickman has played himself off the starting lineup and Adlesh has hit a wall. And Meisner needs to start driving to the basket again. The future is in Smith and the four first years who have seen playing time. I haven’t seen enough of Brumant. With Castlin and Meisner we can sneak into the tournament if he goes with Smith and some combination of Faulds, Bibbs, Hansen and Stefanini. Hunter is an energetic sub but has no offensive game. Tape has potential but is too passive on offense and can’t stay out of foul trouble on defense. Smith can be POY but needs help.

I agree with the above. Hickman has hit a wall because that's probably the limits of his skill as a basketball player. Tape has hit a wall because he got by in HS pretty much on height alone, and is now facing competition who have actual basketball skills. Between the hump that many big men have to get over the first couple of years when they can't defend without fouling and his total lack of offensive moves, you get results like last night when he fouled out in 9 minutes of play without scoring. Although I still think he can be productive, it is obvious that Faulds should start, and Tape should devote the next year to learning how to play at a D1 level.

Adlesh has the second highest 3-pt %, 3rd highest ppg, was 4 for 9 vs BC, (3 of 7 treys), shot little in 2 previous games, was 6 for 10 vs Q, 4 for 7 threes.

No, hardly. Although Adlesh will have trouble with big, quick guards, I exempt him in my previous note from the list of people who have hit a wall.

cc66, Tapé is a bit of a project, but one with beautiful coordination. He will foul out against high D-1 level competition, but look at the numbers against Stony Brook. Three blocks, a steal, and a team leading 6 rebounds—yet five fouls in 25 minutes.

You are mostly correct about Tapé. His issue is inexperience at the top level of high school basketball during his development years. But citing "his total lack of offensive moves" indicates you have either not watched all of Columbia's games, or you have not been paying attention.

This young man has gobs of potential.

Against Quinnipiac, Tapé displayed a number of fine inside moves, ending with dunks, baby hooks, layups, and going 6 of 9 from the field, and committing only two fouls. Quinnipiac, however, lacked strong interior defensive presence, and Tapé has not been able to consistently dominate with his inside game for the reasons you mentioned.

Tapé also demonstrates the ability to hit foul shots consistently. His form is nearly flawless. However, the lack of mental focus, again due to low-level experience, nullifies his form at times, much as it did with Jeff Coby.

I agree with you regarding Adlesh. At this time, Adlesh is our second best guard behind Mike Smith. Adlesh has very good offensive skills and plenty of basketball smarts. His defensive game is also improving. Frankly, I am very surprised the Lions are not setting more screens for him because he is a terrific outside shooter and a threat to drive around the screen. In that respect, Adlesh needs to improve his offensive game by varying what he does on the court. In simple terms, Adlesh should try to copy what Grant Mullins and Brian Barbour both did for the Lions. In other words, Adlesh should emulate both those two players by compensating for his lack of basketball length by driving away from the basket rather than directly to the basket. Adlesh needs to cut across the key or down the side using the backboard on layups by shooting from an angle. That's basic NYC playground stuff that is bound to work for Adlesh. Barbour was great at slant drives even though he was a California product like Adlesh. Also, Adlesh seems to have much stronger physique than Barbour so I would expect Adlesh to have little difficulty emulating Barbour.

Re Tape, I agree that since the Quinnipaic game was the one time that Tape really contributed offensively, there is a pretty striking difference between his performance against good and poor competition. I have seen every game, however, and maybe I missed something, but while I have seen hook shots from Faulds, I haven't seen any from Tape. In fact, both miss a lot from in close, Tape probably even more than Faulds.

Now that Tape has some sense of what he's up against, I suspect his performance will spike. I further suspect, however, that the biggest jump will only occur during the off-season following this, his sophomore year.

Beating Penn could be the key to Columbia's tournament run. Put Tape on Broduer. Broduer is key to Penn's offense and shoots 58.8% from the line. Fouls are ok if you use them wisely.

Penn's Rothschild won't be able to keep up with Meisner and isn't much of a scoring threat. Faulds will pick up the scraps, especially when Broduer rests.
