Correct! The late Jim Maloney, father of Penn great Matt Maloney, and later the assistant coach under John Cheney at Temple, was Calvin Murphy’s coach at Niagara.
For one year.

Well, I was partly right anyway! Thanks for the fully correct answer. Who was the coach for his last 2 years?

Frank Layden. I guess somebody was not happy with that first year W/L record. Wasn't trying to be picky with the additional info.

In response to Lefteroo
Like Lefteroo, I was also a freshman and like to consider that night my first visit to the Palestra (even though I had actually been there for Penn-Navy a week before as one of the 47 season ticket holders at Penn). Ted has accurately set forth the details of that night above but omitted that the Palestra had a capacity crowd of 9,208 there that night, a number that I probably should have played in the lottery a few times. When I left that night with one of my friends (who, like Lefteroo's friend Coins, is still one of my best friends), I said to him "this seems like a pretty good place to watch a game", one of the great understatements of all time. Still going to every Palestra game 50 years later (I've only missed about a dozen Penn games at the Palestra during that time). A great introductory night!
