OaSN #2 - I will be at the Patton Pub at the Thayer at circa 5:00 where I will gladly treat you and your party to a Burger and a beer to further discuss your lack of metal acuity and reward you for your years of faithful support and loyalty to the program

Sincerest thanks for your generous offer of food, beer and acuity counseling, but I won't be making it to the Army game. Go get 'em!

K...maybe I can send you a glossary and obviate the counseling although that latter would have been much more fun for me.

You might want to reconsider and consider this game as a vacation opportunity. Wind chill at the end of the game is supposed to be -15°, although that might be optimistic. With those balmy temperatures plus the attractions of scenic downtown Highland Falls, what could be better?

Getting back to basketball, we could well be 1-2 after Friday’s game, although I suspect we will come out at West Point in a foul mood.

Pomeroy has the Bison as a 1-point favorite at Army. The Black Nights had a good win over Loyola the other night, and they lost their opener at Boston U by eight, after trailing by only one point with 7 minutes left. One thing that fairly certain is that a lot of points will be scored. Army is the 17th fastest team in the country in terms of the length of their offensive possessions, and Bucknell is 41st in that same category. Further, both teams have had mediocre defenses this year.

Don’t forget the high parking lot atop Christl Arena and the walk up the steps. That place is cold and windy on a fall day

Our defense is “mediocre?” More like non-existent.

Pomeroy ranking of #222 (out of 351). Last year they ranked #83. How much of the difference is due to the loss of Toomer and Mackenzie, and how is due to other mysterious factors?

I’m so horribly disappointed with this team I can’t really care about Army right now. Coast Guard Academy seems a better opponent.

Apologies for being so negative but I don’t agree with JKR that only 3 games in March matter. You have to learn to prepare, learn to compete, learn to win. I would love Bob Knights (who I despise) view on just “turning it on in March”. There’s clearly no panic here but at the same time all the excuses are over. We’re 1-1 in the PL after two games with both at home and one against American w/o Nelson and Boston w/o Havener. We’re not the only NCAA team missing guys.

I didn't mean to imply that regular season games don't matter. To paraphrase Coach Davis, we need to go in expecting to win every game and prepared to win ever game. They weren't prepared to win last night, which he readily admitted was his fault.

But the success or failure of this season won't be judged on one home loss in January. We lost to Lehigh at home last January. On the other hand, if we go 17-1 and lose in the tournament, will that be a successful season? Not to me (or the players or the coaches, I suspect). The overall success of the season will be judged on those three games in March (hopefully more). Just ask the Holy Cross fans.

One thing many have forgotten due to the late-season success last year is that the team struggled to win the league last year. If you recall, the Bison were 12-3 and Boston U was 11-4 when the two teams met in Boston in the third-to-last game of the year. Had Boston won that game, they probably would have ended up with the 1 seed since they owned the tiebreaker. Then the championship game might well have been played in Boston.

But Boston not only did not win that game, they were more or less run off the court by a clearly better team. We won the league by 3 games. I do not think you will see many PL teams win by 3 games, so not such a struggle. Totally realize that what you are saying about “had they won” is completely true. But I am saying there was no way they were going to win. But that was last year...

JKrun, AGREED. Didn’t mean to be argumentative. I’m very careful around that as we are all on the same team and sharing our passion for the program. We’re both right and my counterpoint ignored your larger argument. At this stage, the goal is to win the PL RS (BRW - there’s a lot of keystrokes in that one!)

On a separate note BRW, can you tell me if the other team scores over 80 and wins...can we still get a free frosty?

Old, the wording on the big screen at the game made it clear the Bison have to win (and score 80 or above) for the free frosty.

And to decipher, I'll take a shot. Bison Road Warrior's onion is in North Carolina and Old is in Nationals in Hall of Fame?

A question I cant answer. While Davis was Flannery's assistant in charge of defense, he was in charge of one of the better zone defenses in League and some years the US. Wonder what has changed from the great defensive strategy that got Bison into the top 25 to today? Seems like other teams have adjusted to our somewhat predictable man to man. Not in love with zone but at what point do you give it a try?

Not sure. Flannery spent hundreds of hours practicing the match-up zone, where players have to instinctively switch men simultaneously to make it effective. If one man switches but his teammate doesn't simultaneously pick up the"open" man, then it can be disastrous. I don't know if ND even practices the match-up any more. Based on its lack of use, I suspect it is not a main focus in practice either.

If the team isn't prepared for the old Flannery type of match-up, I'd still like to see an occasional use of a basic 2-1-2 or 2-3, just to give the opponents a different look. Holy Cross and Lehigh have both struggle against zones at different times this year.
