Big game this week. Cornell presents some matchup problems we have not faced this year. Matt Morgan, Stone Gettings and Steve Julian. They have two bigs who can (potentiall) match up with ours and they have an elite scorer in Morgan. Morgan and Gettings are top 5 scorers in the league and Julian is the top rebounder and shot blocker (plays almost 30 min a game).

Cornell hasn't played well on the road (2-6 vs 4-1 at home) yet they will be well aware of how poorly they played last year in the Palestra. The guys need to come out on their game.

We've done well against Morgan in the past---although he seems to have really stepped up his game offensively this year. Weak defensive player--gotta make him work on the defensive end. As long as we keep him under control, I feel pretty good about this one. I am more concerned with Smith of Columbia.

Seconded. As much as Cannady or Bell can go off, Smith--when on--is even more dangerous.

Um, Mike Smith has scored 25 points in a game 4 times in his career, and never more than 28.

Matt Morgan has averaged 25 per game this year. He’s done it twice in 4 games against Penn.

He also does it while paradoxically having a higher ORAT than Smith and a higher usage rate.

The question is defense, of course, but that is Smith’s weakness, too.

Both very good players of course. But i’d take Morgan, and i’m Not sure there is a particularly good statistical or visual argument for Smith.

How about that 20-1 number Smith to Foreman last year at Levien? Morgan really has never beaten us like that, although he has scored 28 and 26 against us in losses. We have beaten Cornell 9 straight times--even when guys like Henry Brooks and DNH were running in slow motion up and down the court. Columbia has been much tougher on us.

Matt Morgan scares the crap out of me. Every time I see him play he lights it up. I will likely not watch the Cornell game for just that reason.

Smith’s 20 that day came on sub 40% shooting for the day (including 4 for 12 on 2 pointers). So to me, most of the time when I watch Columbia, they actually would be better off if he didn’t shoot as much. He got his 20, and it was enough to win. But I think they’d be more efficient with better distribution.

Cornell is the opposite. Almost any shot that Morgan doesn’t take is a bad shot.

I do agree that results matter most, and I also think that we’ve matched up better physically with Cornell in recent years. Columbia was tougher than Cornell overall. My guess is that Columbia and Cornell are more comparable this year. Cornell appears to be better than last year, and Columbia seems about the same as last year. We will find out more soon. If the OOC results translate to the conference season, both Columbia and Cornell may seem better this year, as the lack of top 100 teams will lead to more wins for the back half of the conference.

Cornell can put up lots of points. Morgan will certainly get his 20+ points and is one of the nation's top scorers. Gettings is averaging just under 16 a game and is capable of putting up Morgan-like numbers. Outside of those two, Jack Gordon averages 8.2 points and Steve Julian averages 5.4.

Wil Bathurst, who is not a point guard, was moved to that spot at the beginning of the year. He got injured after playing the first 7 games and is out for the season. Terrance McBride from Sierra Canyon H.S. is now the team's point guard. He is their best perimeter defender, but not experienced.

They put up a high number of threes, but at a slightly below average rate. They do shoot two pointers well.

Julian is one of the top IL rebounders, but his numbers mostly come on the defensive end. Gettings is better with regards to offensive rebounding. As a team, though, their rebounding is not very strong.

Defensively, they giving up almost 81 points a game, the most in the IL. They allow almost 9 threes a game on a league-worst 37.5%. The Big Red don't created much pressure, so they create a low number of steals and turnovers.

Although Morgan and Gettings should get their points, Penn should certainly be able to win this game.

They can score, but can't defend. The way we lose is if we fail to capitalize on their bad defense.

I am confident we will sweep. As roughly 10 point favorites for both games, chance of a sweep should be around 2/3.

Seem to remember a similar comment about Toledo. It doesn’t matter who is playing defense if we don’t put the ball in the basket.

Game Notes for tonight's contest:
http://www.pennathletics.com/documents/2018/1/11// ...

Same starting lineup. Jelani Williams, Eddie Scott and Tyler Hamilton listed as injured.

One side item, the Penn Game Notes mention that Vince Curran will be with Joe Tordy. The Cornell Game Notes list Katy Allen working with Tordy. She did last week's game againt Princeton. If he is still broadcasting Patriot League games on CBS Sports Network, their game is not until Sunday. Anyone know who will be calling the game?

As long as Vince gives us 10 boards and 10 rebounds a game and slam dunks the winning basket against Temple, he has a job for life here as far as I am concerned.

The "Notemeal from Princeton" section of game notes failed to mention that this was the first time all season that Penn won when Darnell had 10 or more field goal attempts.

Predictions for tonight's game:

1) Darnell again attempts more than 10 FGs.
2) A.J. gets a double-double.
3) Sam hits 4+ from beyond the arc.
4) Jarrod plays 15+ minutes and picks up 3 or fewer personal fouls.
5) Penn covers the spread.

If Cornell does that, there should be an investigation. Cornell hasn't 50% of their 3s in any game this season and last hit 60% back in December 2010.

Cornell's wins over Toledo and Duquesne tell me they have a chance, but the Big Red will need to win a shootout, or the Quakers will need to have a brutal night from the floor.

Both Morgan and Getting are very, very good. Morgan is prob one of the best offensive players we will see all year. Cornell doesn't have much depth is their problem, but if they shoot the 3 well and we don't, we can absolutely lose this.

This weekends games are 100% trap games after the win last weekend. Hope the team is ready as both will be very tough games against teams led by 1st Team All Ivy contenders.

Cornell is a scary enough team that there's no reason to think beyond tonight's opponent.

Morgan is a lethal scorer. He can't be stopped, just contained. He can just go off and score 30 or 40.

Then add Gettings to that.

I think we start off with Foreman on Morgan. I think Foreman has been a bit better than Woods at slowing down outside shooters, Woods at drivers. But if Foreman doesn't work then Woods. Ultimately we may need to put Betley on him, with Goodman another option.

I sense a Sam Jones game.

Women up 22-8 after 1. Penn shooting 3's very well. Cornell very bad moving the ball. Palestra very hot. Large fans on all four sides of the court, which of course aren't doing a thing.

Now 38-18. Cornell has had one good-looking offensive set all night, and even that was only after Penn had knocked it OB. Shudder to think how many turnovers Red must have by now. Hope Princeton gets a good game from Columbia tonight, 'cause they might put up 100 on these ladies. PS, 13 turnovers for Cornell.

Good start on both ends. Foreman with the bonus three, points already from both bigs, and Betley with one of his wild looking but reliable bank shots from a low angle. Big block on a Morgan drive by A.J. too.

The one really bad Play was Foreman penetrating into danger and throwing up a bad shot which generated a fast break the other way for Morgan’s only hoop so far.

Good ball movement for a Betley 3 makes a 7-0 Penn run since Cornell tied it at 13.

Now 11-0 with a Brodeur hoop and then Foreman layup off a steal.

Does Cornell have more than one score in their base half court offense? Seems like all of their points have come in floor imbalance off either transition or offensive rebounds. Way too many of the latter so far.

Great inbound play for Brodeur to Betley give-n-go to push lead back to 10 at the break.

Predictions at the half:

1) Possible
2) Likely
3) Possible, but unlikely
4) Possible, but highly unlikely
5) Likely

Does anyone dispute who is the better team?

It's now down to 4 and Morgan only has 5. Not good. Not good at all. This has the smell of down to the wire.

Ugh. 8-2 Cornell run to start half. And Morgan has done nothing so far.

Foreman and Betley with out-of-control layup attempts haven’t helped.

Foreman stuffed again. Way too much dribbling, not enough ball movement on offense so far.

Pushed back to 6 after nice Goodman to A.J. dump off in transition.

Why does Jackson Donahue insist on doing three really bad things for every one good thing he contributes?

This is going to be a foul fest given the perfect match between Penn’s horrible FT % and Cornell’s quick strike potential.

You’re discounting a guy putting forth effort on the defensive end even while he’s struggling on offense. It’s idiotic and contrary to everything coaches try to get players to do.
