Have to say, I like the way they have turned up the defense, since it gives them a way to win even if the shots are not falling. The last two games the defense has kept them in. I also think that will be the case more and more often as the league teams know how to defend us better than teams that have not seen us before.

In PL play, the Bison are giving up 0.89 points per possession, first in the league by a wide margin. Last year, they gave up 0.93 in league play. This year's improvement translates to 3 fewer points allowed in an average game of 75 possessions - enough to decide a few games. It also equates to a gain of over 9 points per game as compared to an average PL team's defense.

Against Lehigh and Colgate - two fairly good opponents - the Bison have given up .795 points per game. Hard to tell how much is due to strong defense and how much is due to poor shooting - but it's a good trend.

What’s the over/under on announced attendance in the basketball crazy Mecca of Hamilton?

Colgate's official attendance figure is 819. Didn't look nearly that large on camera. BRW, what is your official count?

Maybe good defense causes poor shooting. Anyway the difference in the defense is visible. Ooc saw us giving up tons of uncontested shots, while in the past two games you are hard pressed to find an uncontested dribble, let alone an uncontested shot.

I'd say maybe 350, 400 tops. Ushers were encouraging people to sit on the side opposite the cameras to make it look better on TV.

Strange game. Watched a couple of times and couldn't believe how many open shots Colgate missed, particularly before and after half. Doubled Nana and he didn't seem to know what to do. Thomas making multiple "cute/lazy" passes to no one. Random substitutions throughout game. Was this a lack of coaching or just an average night by Bison playing against an inferior team?

Raymond went 1-11. Their good freshman went 0-11 and their other freshman went 0-7

I didn’t see the game but I’m not sure what to believe as to why Colgate’s shooting % was so poor. Some say it was good, tight defense then someone else says Colgate missed a ton of open shots. Can’t be both. I can believe there were some lazy passes and turnovers as we have seen a lot of this all year...and given we are 19 games in with a ton of experience on the court, I can’t beleive th turnover problems will suddenly get fixed. I just hope we can overcome it game to game.

I am not as pessimistic about the turnover situation. The Bison over the course of the full season are the 50th best team in the nation in turnovers, and they had a lot of OOC games with low turnovers (Monmouth, Maryland, Siena, Ball State, St Joes, Vermont, Northeastern, and Richmond). The problem really has just been in PL games. And not just full PL games, but the first half of PL games. Look at the second half Bison turnover totals, which have all been very low:

- Colgate 4 turnovers
- Lehigh 5 turnovers
- Lafayette 2 (2nd half plus OT)
- Boston 5 turnovers
- American 3 turnovers

AVERAGE TURNOVERS IN 2ND HALF = 3.8

So in the second half, the Bison turnovers are consistently very low - but they are very high in first halves. Don't know if it is simply lack of focus, or not having a good game plan to move the ball (but with good halftime adjustments), or what. But the problem should be fixable if there is no problem in the second half. And it should be fixable if they were really good in the turnover category in OOC play against better defenses.

I had a business commitment on Monday evening. So, I watched the game last night on DVR. When McKenzie is hitting shots, this is a very different team. Let's hope that he gets hot.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

Yes! He obviously has not hit his groove yet, but still has been a meaningful addition since his return. Once he gets it going we can be the team we all expected us to be. Plus Tommer returns tonight.
