Unusually bad year for Mooney, who's been pretty competitive at Richmond. Still waiting for Johnson to turn the corner at Fairfield. Optimistic about Earl long-term. HC and AU seem like no-hoper jobs, and I'd bet Brennan would be out if they had any money to put into the BB program.

I'm worried about Scott Greenman stuck as #2 in a "no-hope" program.

Maybe I'm too pessimistic about AU. Brennan did win CotY in 2014 and got into the NCAAs, but the record has declined since then. As for Greenman, his AU page cites some success as a recruiter, pulling in two Patriot Rookies of the Year, so I doubt much stink would attach to him.

The tough thing about AU is they had a long (13 seasons) run of relative success (.537 overall/.600 in the league) under Jeff Jones, so anything less looks underachieving.

Wow, Petey hasn't changed a bit. Just put a rolled up program in his hand and I'd be ready to start chanting,"Sit down, Pete, sit down, Pete...," again. Always respected him and, in some ways, didn't mind the overtime playoff loss in '96 that made the UCLA game possible. The '81 playoff loss still stings.

I did. Thought that was Dunphy's finest year as a Penn coach. Nobody gave Penn a chance that year with all of the starters that had graduated.

Let me clarify. Pete's retirement that year with waves of national recognition and the dramatic ending to the UCLA game helped make him legendary. I actually felt good about that, which eased the disappointment of the overtime playoff loss. I would never have seen things that way 15 years earlier when we played poorly and lost badly. The year before that we beat them at the last second with only one starter left from the Final Four team. That led to an NCAA victory over Washington St. You could argue that 1980 was Weinhauer's finest coaching job by the same token.
