Michael Wang is a very good recruit for us. Does anyone know if we have anyone else who has committed (frosh or transfer)or whether we are very close to another commitment? We lose a lot of minutes with Foreman and Wood and excellent three point shooting and free throw shooting with Wood and Jones. It seems that we really have needs to fill, especially somebody who is athletic and can play the 2-3 positions. Any solid leads?

Well, if Jelani Williams does not play this year, the likelihood is that he will exercise his full 4 years, making him effectively a Class of '22 member, and a good one.

Jelani was certainly the biggest prize in that 2017 Penn class.

2018 was a weak class for depth. Really good at the top, obviously, with Jaelin, Noah and Spencer, but just not very deep. Have to imagine that most of the effort has been shifted to the 2019s.

I hope you are correct about Jelani. However, if his class work is current, and he is as good as we hope, he may graduate on time and play in a higher level league as a graduate student transfer.

Ivy leaguers are expected to complete their athletic eligibility in the 8th semester after enrolling. From what I understand, Jelani may have another year of eligibility, but it won't be in the Ivy League.

This is so not true. If you get a medical exemption you can be in school for 10 semesters at Penn.

Sure, but can you play basketball in that 5th year?

My online research and my recollection of previous postings suggests this is an Ivy League rule, which explains why so many players have withdrawn to come back for their 4th year of study while they're healthy enough to play basketball. I know this has occurred at other schools (Columbia, Princeton, Harvard).

Anyone know for sure?

It seemed that Frankie Brown was at Penn for like 10 years, not 10 semesters.

Asked (by you!) and answered on another board. There is no league rule and schools are different. penn happens to allow 10semesters in the case of medical redshirt. There are actual examples of this, cited eolsewhere on the board.

OK.

Gotta get Harvard on board. That HBS Executive Sports Business class has been attracting what would be quite a roster (if we can only reverse the NCAA ban on professionals).

If you get a medical "redshirt" exemption from the league you can complete year 4 of eligibility in year 5.

The 8 semester rule is a school rule at several Ivies including Harvard and Princeton. It is not an Ivy League rule.

At Harvard you are considered graduated when you have 32 credits. Many majors at Penn require 36+ credits and you can always increase that number by double majoring. It's pretty easy to plan a 5th year at Penn.

Thank you. This is very welcomed news. I took a look at his video on youtube. Betley-like. There is every reason to be optimistic about this 2019 commitment. He appears to fit our style of play very well.

Who are Jaelin, Noah and Spencer?

I watched Martz's video. First I watched his junior year video and thought he looked like a tweener for Div 1 basketball. Then I watched his senior year video. He got a lot stronger and faster. I don't agree with the Betley comparison - though I'd love another one like him.

I liked his motor and his shooting. He looked like he was always on the move.
