Great article! As those were my years at Penn, it was wonderful to re-live those great moments and people. Thanks, Coins (Alan's nickname).

Wait..."Coins" is Alan Cotler? He posts on this board periodically.

Streamers, thanks a ton for posting this! As a fellow member of the Class of 72, I knew "Coins" Cotler casually.
By the time I finished this piece, I had tears in my eyes. It reminded me of the extraordinarily important role that Penn, Penn basketball and The Palestra have played in my life.
Forwarding a link to my kids momentarily.

This is one great read and I am now a Digger fan for life.
“Calhoun, Cotler, Morse, Tritton, Walters, Billingslea (the finger thrust was close to a punch as he said your name) I worked my butt off to recruit you guys. I brought you here to this great Ivy League institution. You chose to have me teach you how to play championship basketball. And I chose you and you are here for one reason and one reason only --- that’s to beat the #%$@ Tigers.

No. Coins who posts on this board is NOT Alan Cotler but "Coins" was Alan's nickname at Penn.

What a great video and tribute to Alan from his kids. Seeing that old footage of games really brought back memories of what the Palestra was like (and, if we're lucky, will be again).

I am an infrequent poster but read most of the posts except when they degenerate into name-calling, which has been too frequently of late. Alan Cotler's piece was part of a memoir series, aptly named "45 for 45," which as class president of '72 I launched shortly after our 40th reunion and ran up to our 45th. Alan's brilliant contribution was number 45; we actually ran 50 memoirs, each preceded by introduction which I wrote. If you would like to read any of the other pieces, some of which are equally fascinating, please click onto http://www.alumni.upenn.edu/s/1587/gid2/16/interi o... and then click onto 1972 Memories Project.
