Why in the world are big 5 opponents not allowed to bring their bands?? It even looked like there were seats saved for them. And to confirm, the awful Done-Phy rollout was indeed one of our own.
Hmmm... that was a witty rollout but very distasteful to many of us long term fans.

I still want to know why that illegal pick was called with the whistle after the shot. For a great game to come down to that kind of non-contact BS is just ridiculous.

I'm still mad about this too. I want to know if coach ever received an explanation. It soured what would have been the perfect Philly sports weekend. Of course we still might have lost, but to make that call after not making one all game was beyond bad. I don't think their big freshman was set for a single screen. He was constantly moving and it was never called.

Correct. And there simply was no contact here. We hit that shot (leaving aside the fact that I think there was a foul on the shot attempt as well) and they need a couple of scores with less than 2 minutes. Certainly, it would have finished differently.

Hi there -
Yeah, unfortunately, this is a new Big 5 AD rule as was communicated to us at the beginning of the year. The Penn Band really wanted to be at the local Big 5 away games for both men's and women's this season, but was locked out.
But it was already the case that many pep bands have simply fallen out of the habit of travelling to away athletic events outside of their conference tourneys. This reflects the way the college basketball world has been heading for quite a while: fewer and fewer opportunities for visiting bands and cheerleaders.
The Ivies might be one of the last few conferences around where visiting bands can go out to away venues and perform fight songs for their teams. Rarely is it now that we can visit another school out of our conference or outside of a postseason tourney.
cheers,
Kushol

We had our chances after this bad call. It did not come down to this.....

"Certainly" is a bit overstated, but it was about as high-leverage a call as is possible outside of the final couple possessions.
I'd be curious to hear what the ref would say walking through the tape. I suspect "fooled by the way the defender came off the screen" would have to be the explanation.

Oh come on. Instead of trying to come from behind, we would have been ahead 2 possessions. It was as critical a call as can be made. Could we have won it anyway? Sure, but that isn't the issue. I think Temple would have folded had that shot counted. They were on the brink several times. I don't bitch about non-calls---that happens in the heat of the game. But a blatant incorrect call taking away a 3 point shot with less than 2 minutes to go and the game tied is totally different.

I agree it was a bad call at a critical time. My point is we still had 3 possessions to tie it AFTER that call and couldn't. It's not like they lit it up after that call, they got a tough, contested 2 after that possession and then we got 3 possessions to tie it and got nada. Then Brown hits the 3 and free throws ensued.

“Screaming Lady†was also there for the Princeton game, and she was equally as annoying and obnoxious then too. At least we won that one, but she’s gotta go anyway, along with the godawful disco. And while we’re at it, given the malaise of the last ten years, I personally could do without the pretentious “smoke and mirrors†show prior to the Penn players being introduced. Cringeworthy and embarrassing, IMHO.
Finally, isn’t our old pal Steve Bilsky still the “commissioner†(or whatever) of the Big Five? Perhaps some of these stupid rules about the bands, etc. are partly his doing? And is there one thing that he has done in that job to promote the Big Five? Or is he trying to kill that program too, like he almost did to ours?

we must sound like a bunch of old fogeys to the younger fans, but all the gimmickry is really hard to swallow - put a winner on the court and everything else will take care of itself. You think they would resort to think kind of BS at Duke?

Thanks for encapsulating the problem with the current & Bilsky marketing apparatus. The screaming & the disco just add to the debasement of what the Palestra is and means. It did start with the embarrassing hokum introductions & light show. I refuse to turn around to watch that. Maybe it is fogeyism; but when you have a Cathedral you treat it with respect. When you have the Big Five you let the schools send their bands to away Big Five games.

Couldn't agree more with the comments regarding "The Screaming Lady" and the pounding disco music. Both of those "additions" to the Palestra experience are absolutely terrible. Cringe-inducing, in fact. Is there a particular person at DRIA to whom objections may be addressed, and expressed?
Thanks!

Anyone have access to an actual undergraduate for an opinion on the screams and bad music. Could it be that they like it?
Or is it a middle-aged administrators guess as to something college kids would like.
