The Sagarin ratings make interesting reading in light of this weekend's shakeup in the league. In the year-long ratings, Columbia is fifth in the league at 212 overall, expected to go 3-5 the rest of the season, beating only Dartmouth away, Brown at home, with at toss-up at home against Yale. But the "recent games" ranking has the Lions up at about 165, moving into second place behind Penn. Movement down at the top of the league has CU beating Yale twice, Dartmouth away, Princeton at home, Brown at home, with a toss-up at Harvard. The swing in expected league record goes from 6-8 to 9-5. It's all statistical hoo-hah, but it suggests the rest of the season might be pretty exciting for us even with a nod to Mr. James and regression to the mean.

Mike James dissed us this morning, calling us the easily the least impressive of the teams with a realistic shot at fourth place. Seems a bit harsh after our win over a previously undefeated Harvard, and it also seems not to take into consideration what appears to me at least to be a significant uptick in the recent performances of Meisner, Castlin and Adlesh, with Smith really excellent this weekend. If we can get more from Stefanini, Tape, Faulds and Hanson I think we can hold serve at home and pick up a few wins on the road.

So how do you slow down Desmond Cambridge? Mitch Henderson didn't have an answer. Brian Earl is next up, then Jim Engles. Time to pass around the heartburn medication to all the Ivy League coaches except Mike Martin. Lucky guy!

Not meant to be a “diss,” but rather just pointing out reality. Columbia has to make a volume of threes at a rather high percentage to win, unlike other 4th place contenders Brown and Yale who can either score in multiple ways (Brown) or have both offensive weapons and a defensive mindset (Yale). The stretch run for fourth will involve some close games that are must wins, and I’d prefer to roll with teams that can win different ways, that’s all.

Castlin scores from anywhere. So does Lukas. And Smith. On Friday Tape did as well. Key for us is Castlin rounding back into form.

Last night Dartmouth shot threes at a significantly higher percentage than we did. 52%. That is what made the game close at the end.
