Holy Cross Suspends Players Amid Probe for Possible NCAA Violations

No info available other than the little that is in the Boston Herald article, which was linked on the HC board recently. It's not April 1st, so apparently it is a legitimate news item. At this point, there is no info as to what sport(s) it applies to.

Seems odd they'd decline to identify the team(s) involved. I wonder if that's indicative of it involving a team or teams that are not currently in-season.

I just read all 4 pages on this topic on the HC Board, and they do not seem to know what is going on.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

We will find out if it involves any male or female basketball players in the next 90 minutes or so.

Best wisecrack over there (by "inhocsigno"):
"I take this as a sign we are getting ready for the jump to a P5 conference? Need to practice minor NCAA violations in order to play with the big boys"

HC would no doubt have developed their NCAA violations to a much higher level as well if it weren't for the Patriot League.

Seems like Charles is not playing. Not sure if it’s related. Regardless, HC is getting trounced

HC seems to have 9 players dressed. All have played, but not doing too well

According to the HC board, he is not on the bench either. Apparently Jack Stephens, a reserve center who hasn't worked out, is also not there.

Score is now 59-25 in favor of visiting Navy.

Per "sader81":
"Heard from a good source what happened. Unfortunate and petty violation with huge potential punishment exposure. Can’t blame administrators, it’s all on the players."

Huge potential punishment for a petty violation??

Considering the timing, perhaps a little wager on the Super Bowl, which is a major no no in the eyes of the hypocritical NCAA which makes a fortune off sports gambling. Pure speculation though...

There appeared to be a 5x bigger crowd at Colgate than in HC tonight. Crazy

I'm guessing this is not about selling autographs.

1. If it were to involve gambling, it wouldn't be merely a campus box pool or a wager between friends. NCAA hasn't bothered with those sort of things. However getting involved with something run by organized crime would be a different matter.

2. Yes, much larger at Cotterell. They had some sort of promotion that apparently got some students to show up. Official attendance of 959. HC's attendance was not only affected by their team's performance this year but also by an ice storm that hit much of New England today.

Holy Cross Suspends Players Amid Probe for Possible NCAA Violations

From Worcester Telegram:

The Crusaders (8-16, 5-8 Patriot League) were without three players, junior Karl Charles, and sophomores Jack Stevens and Will Powers.

Holy Cross coach Bill Carmody confirmed after the game that Charles, Stevens and Powers were suspended from the team.

When asked for a reason why the three players were suspended, Carmody said, “You probably got the statement from the school, so I’ll just leave it at that.”

For those who don't follow HC basketball, Stevens was an early Carmody signee who hasn't worked out. Between injuries and lack of ability, he has played all of 2 minutes this year. (Against the Bison no less.) They would probably love to have his scholarship back. And Powers is a walk-on.

"Spenser" at Crossports:
"I’m hearing that this IS a criminal investigation and that it may be serious. That’s why it has to be close to the vest. I’m a lawyer who does criminal work. In Worcester. My sources are pretty good."
