The game notes are up, minus the starting lineups. That's either an administrative oversight, or perhaps the coaching staff needs an extra day to consider our recommendations.

Lose 88-84; we played pretty well in spurts, but yale's ball movenent killed us. Stefanini leads with 17, and Tape is getting much better. Nevertheless, when we can't make foul shots or defend Oni, some good performances go for naught.

Penn at 7-0, Harvard 6-1, 5 teams now at 3-4, and Dartmouth at 0-7.

Two of 5 for 3rd and 4th place.

Disparity in fouls looks like typical home cooking at Lee.

Yale is fortunate to have James Jones as its coach as he has an excellent understanding of all facets of the game and has learned how to win in the Ivy League by playing offense far better than most anyone else. Tonight, his team repeatedly shredded our defense for easy baskets in the same manner he has done for years. Of course, Yale also shot well from the outside, but the numerous easy bunnies inside were the key. "Penetration and pass" has been Yale's motto for years and it worked well again tonight as our guys seemed lost too many times. Having said that, I would suggest it didn't help matters for Columbia that the Lions' starting line-up spotted Yale a double digit lead before Gabe Stefanini came off the bench to spark a nice comeback in the latter part of the first half. However, for some inexplicable reason we didn't see Stefanini again until much later in the contest. Likewise, I have no idea why Patrick Tape didn't start the second half after playing very well in the first half. Yale quickly took the lead in the second half and didn't relinquish it despite our strong effort from the final line-up of Smith, Meisner, Stefanini, Castlin and Adlesh. Despite the loss, we are still in a five way tie for third place because Cornell defeated Brown and Princeton lost to Harvard. So the Lions still have another chance tomorrow night to remain relevant in the Tournament race by defeating Brown. Maybe it's time to use the starting line-up that was on the floor at the end of tonight's game.

It didn't help that Meisner took so few shots as one of the leading scorers.

Actually, in this case it was simpler. Absent extraordinary circumstances, i.e., an off the charts D or O, neither of which we possess, you can't win a game when you shoot 42% from the charity stripe as a team.

Yale is always a very tough place to play. And we also do not seem to be able to shoot FTs on the road. This was a winnable game but I do question our failure to play better defense. Hopefully we will pull out the win tonight.

Fair and close game, both teams were evenly matched. As others have noted we lost because our defense was shredded by yale's passing and we didn't shoot well enough from the FT line. On our defense, Jones just out coached Engels, we need to be more organized and more disciplined. We also forced very few TOs for the number of passes Yale was playing. This is a failure of aggression and organization on defense. I would give stefanini more of Hickman's minutes, but in my book, yesterday's loss fell on defensive coaching.

Last year Engles substituted players at a furious rate from the getgo. This year he has been loyal to his starting line-up to a fault. Hickman started off well last night driving to the basket and drawing two quick personal fouls on Yale's freshman big, Paul Anderson, which caused Anderson to be benched. But then Hickman missed his foul shots and just stopped scoring or otherwise contributing which unfortunately has been the case with him for a long time. Hickman is a very athletic player who is virtually unstoppable when he goes to the basket strongly against his defender. His problem has always been that he gets called for an excessive number of charges or doesn't convert his shots for whatever reason. On defense, he has never developed into the great defender many thought he would become. Hickman has the size and agility to consistently block shots, make steals, and otherwise mess up opponents. He seems like a great young man so I truly hope he finishes his Columbia basketball career in style.

Injured last night, Tape is in street clothes, which stretches Columbia's bench and leaves us down at the half, 36-29.
